In the board game, Venice is a major power for the first ~70 years (after that the player switches to the Netherlands), same as Portugal (who switches to Russia). All of which makes for some Macchiavellian choices vis a vis Turkey and the Mameluks.

On the other hand, Poland is a minor throughout.

I'm playing a EU2 MP game as Venice atm. It is easy to get bb points, but the nations around you clober you :(

Anyway 150 years later, I have 50% inflation, Croatia, Alexandria (which set off a bunch(ie 10 wars) of wars that I'm still trying to get out of 10 years later :( )

I like Venice more in EU1 than EU2 I think...

interesting. pat have you played the boardgame? (i havent but have seen the maps and some of the fan sites, theres also a yahoo groups list for it) what do you think?

It's the perfect game for a rules-lawyer to play, and the worst one to play with one.:D But if you can have a group that can handle rules issues in a friendly fashion as they come up (and they *will* come up), I think it has a great game system. One of the few board games that has it all: military, diplomacy, and economics.
