I think Venice was founded by the population of Aquileia a roman city on the north shore of the Adriatic sea during the "Völkerwanderungszeit" "Folkvandringstiden". Don't know the approriate english word. As a safe city un siegeable from shore side. The city was a subject to the emperor of Bysans until 11th century.

Because of the Huns, not the Vandals. As said in a previous post, after the city of Aquilea (and one or two others, I think) were sacked by the Huns, people went to the swamps, near the city and establish themselves there. Whenever the Romans saw someone they said something like "veni ici" (wich means something like "you came here too"; I've learned that one in french and it was said "toi aussi tu es venu").

Carthage ("new city") was founded 814 BC by Phenicians (sp?) from Tyros, todays Lebanon I think.

Considering it was the capital of Roman Africa, seat of the Diocese, it was quite possibly bigger than the Phoenician city destroyed in 146BC. Certainly the Roman harbour was actually on a shoreline that was further out from the original Punic harbour.

As is true of Roman cities-not just Rome itself, which was particularly famous for its' "insulae" (apartment blocks.) Roman apartment blocks were also often to normally more than four stories.

As for New Carthage-it was the Romans who referred to it as Carthago Nova. Hamilcar Barca, its' founder, called it "Kart Hadasht", in English, New City......the same name as Carthage itself.

"Völkerwanderungszeit" would be something like "Time of Wandering Peoples", the period of Barbarian migrations starting around 150CE. See this glossary: The Fall of Rome (150CE-475CE)

Which was apparently, from what evidence we have, ignored. Prohibitions against the excessive height of buildings occurred more than once. I believe you're probably thinking of the Augustan example here, as that's the one most commonly known.

I wasn't thinking of a specific reign, I didn't know there were several attempts at making a law like that. But when I think about it it stands to reason that there would have been.

I think you can't make Vandals "Swedes", they did a long trip about it, if you do that you can call Americans "English" and South American people "Spanis"
