Since I've played Venice I can't help but notice that Venice when played by the AI takes a serious beating in the early goings of the game. Most of the time losing two provinces and some gold, and thats not counting the military units lost in battle. Now Venice is a kick ass major. She has a bunch of provinces, one that has a very high income. A manfactory and a CoT to begin with. Good monarchs and leaders too.

Now if you ever wanted to play a different major in the IGC go for Venice. Only make sure that Venice makes Hungry an ally with the one diplomat she starts with. If she doesn't...Austria will ally with Hungry and soon attack Venice. Without Hungry to ally with Austria will probably ally with Lorriane and lose badly when France and Lorraine go to war.

That alone will allow you a good start.

To further ensure that Austria will not attack you is to make a royal marriage with Austria.

Now if you want an easy war to win against Austria then make allies of Helvetia and Wurtemburg, Helvetia normally builds a large army and the two are connected to Austria. Then just wait for your royal marriage to end.

Well I hesitated a bit ... and Austria beat me too it. But Instead of rebooting i waited a bit, softened up Austrian attitude with a bit of monetary aid, and then joined their alliance (comprising Austria, Hungary, Wurtemburg and Baden). Then I built myself an army.

About 1498 or so you get 2 good commanders with siege bonuses (all Venetian commanders, including the red-shirts, seem to have a siege bonus of 1, by the way). Then I proceeded to beat the crap out of the infidel Turks, annexing them by 1504. At this point in the game most of their fortresses are minimal, including Thrace. Anyway, that sort of took care of that problem.

Of course my faithful allies got away with a couple of provinces. But hey .. they were welcome to have them.

I haven't played this game any further, but it sure seems like a promising start...

It's one of the few times I have experienced offensive benefits from an alliance. All my northern allies went straight for Turkey's throat, decimating those troops who weren't occupied with the Mamelukes :D

Another stratergy I apply is trading maps. This is a big bonus for Venice since she is one of the few nations starting out with traders. I always try to trade maps because I like to see whats going on in the world without using the columbus cheat.
