Major are played a ton. Johan occasionally posts a breakdown of the top 10 played countries and it's usually a lot of great powers (+ Byzantium, of course).

Who actually plays the suggested nations anyways? I've spend hundreds of hours into this game, yet I've never played as England, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Ottomans or Russia. It's no fun starting that big. I did form the Netherlands first, after three tries and you learn a lot from those games. I've played Sweden as only easier and suggested nation after that. Then I went on to the Papal state, Bohemia, Japan, Brittany, Lubeck, Tunis, Korea, Ethiopia, Bahamis. And then went on to challenging campaigns Riga, Persia, knights into Jerusalem and Hamburg is the one I did last. Much more fun in my opinion, I never really started with a major power. Sure in the end I became major powers with all of them, but then I care for my carefully build up nation and think it's fun. I started the others once, but I just don't like the fact I have won the game from the beginning... Anyways as far as I know I've now listed all campaigns I've ever finished, not that much actually....
Most of them aren't particulary intersting because they're just so strong. But OPomans is still popular because they're so pathetically easy. And I can't blame people for wanting to roflstomp everyone with no effort every now and then.

I always like to start with one state countries like Urbino or else , but Venice in my opinion should be among the sugested powers for some simple reasons :

Most are just kingdoms and Venice is a Merchant republic its different
Most are mostly land powers and Venice is a naval power
Most are feudal economy and Venice is a commerce economy
Venice can go east and form its empire struggling with Ottomans or Take on Italy.

Most other powers are just land European stuff.
Personally I would also add a Chinese faction like Ming and may be Indian one .

Venice is much frendlier than Sweden for noobs. Atleast from my perspective.

Depends, do you mean as a place to visit or as a place to guide through the ages to world domination?

It was just a small experiment to see if changing nations in that list impacted what was played..

Which it did.

I wonder how many new players, and those coming over from other games such as Total War, fail to realise you can play any nation on the map. Maybe someone out there only plays the suggested nations over and over again, not realising the game offers much more.

England are too busy bum rushing the French and dying generally since the Maine event.

This. Since that event was added England keeps losing all mainland holding within the first decade because they're totally incapable of naval operations. Then they get War of the Roses during or shortly after and are crippled until the 16th century or so.

I want to know more! Specifically, was it significant?

Do you care about which countries are played more -- not from a sense of using that to inform your game development (obviously you do to some extent), but rather from a sense of wanting to encourage people to play certain countries (or even try a wide variety of them)?

Have you considered new approaches to encourage more nation experimentation? Something like having a large pool of "interesting" nations, then pseudo-randomly choosing a subset of them to display to the player at startup (ensuring a mix of easy & more challenging starts, etc)?

Remember there are actually four different sets of recommended nations at the 1444 start: one for Europe (the default one), one for Asia, one for Africa, and one for the New World.
