Cause: Succession law for county of venezia is wrong and screws up merchant republic.
Observation: Playing as the son of the founder of Venice sounded awesome, so I started a game as Teodato Orseolo, a patrician of Venice and vassal to the current doge. Current doge dies, and my character inherits the republic (the duchy title), but not the county title. Instant game over because I have a duke-level title with no counties.
The reason for this is the county of venezia is set to agnatic succession, not elective like it should be.
Fix: Upon inheriting, the game pauses to inform you that you're the new doge. Used the console to force-give myself the county-level title, and that ended up also fixing the succession law. No more problems.
