My first EUII AAR. I will be playing a Grand Campaign Venice, with the following rules:

-Plain 1.08 Very hard/ Furious.
-No loading!!! All that happens, will be recorded.
-No illogical ahistoricies. (No "Take three ships and sail to conquer the Incas")
-No mapstealing, merchant spamming or that kind of a thing (Almost same as above.)
-No cheating or savefile editing.
-No ridiculously illogical combat. (No annex hopping or anything.)

Sounds strict? Yes.
Is fair? Yes again.

If I get annexed, or I am overthrown in a revolt, then I am to choose another nation. (Propably your suggestion, dear readers.)

This AAR won´t propably be filled with glory, but then again, life isn´t either. ;)

Oh and I will be posting some screenshots. I put them into a link, so they won´t disturb the screensize. All links are safe Angelfire.com.

I will be posting the first chapter tonight.

1419 - 1429

"We find ourselves in a war with the kingdoms of Croatia and Hungary. All else is irrelevant... For now." Leader of Venice 1419.

Quickly we removed most funding from our grand navy, as their role in fighting a land enemy is miniscule. We then made a drafting for a new kind of a army training, which endorsed offensive style over defensive style. In the spirit of this new law, we sent our brave army of fifteen thousand men to fight off our enemies in the north, in a province known with the name of Croatia.

Arriving to the battle scene the troops felt confident about themselves. A new fit, up to date western army, facing the ancient rundown Croatians, what could possibly go wrong?

Arrogantly the general ordered a full march on the enemy lines, the soldiers obeyed, and so the battle begun. The attack was at first glamorous, the soldiers arrived to the outskirts of Zagreb. Quickly marching through the accidentally unclosed maingate of the city, they now attacked the palace. The king of Croatia, and thus his kingdom would be theirs. Glory for Venice!

The king being captured and the town being sacked, the Venetians occupying the most expensive accomondations took advantage of the situation and enjoyed themselves. Grapes, women, food all was there to take. For a whole week they lived like grasshoppers, emptying the houses one by one. "Rape the women and burn down the houses", that was the word of the day.

But then. Like a lighting out of the clear sky, a drumroll began on the sixth day of the occupation. "The Hungarians are coming! The Hungarians are coming!". Fifty thousand men marched down the road. The Venetians now eager to leave the city, looked up to their commanders in agony. "What will we do?"

The hasty retreat to the south, met up with a Croatian defence force, enforced with Hungarian cavalriers. The turn back to the city, was stopped
by a joint force of vengeful Croatian civilians, and Hungarian cavalry batallion. The forces now began to disperse. Many ran to the river, others prayed for mercy, many died fighting, but none survived.

The news did not arrive to Venice. Not until the enemy marched to Dalmatia. At this point the king thought that something had gone wrong. The preparations to build a new army began. In Istria a total of twelve thousand men was raized. The forces were mainly financed by loaned money. Having just been named and organized into a division, the still disperse and inexperienced army was to see the war. The joint force of Hungarians and Croatians, totalling eighteen thousand men, drove over the recruits.

Two armies had we risen, two armies had we lost. All had gone down the drain. However we could not give up. There was no room for failures, not in Italy. The foreign instructors who had raized the recruits had survived the thrust to Istria, from where they had escaped to Veneto. The buildup for the third army was organized.

The loans that we had taken proved to be the key to this war. For 75 ducats the Croatians were ready to give up. 75 ducats and we were friends again.

The war was over. Children rejoiced, elderly too. However fighting would not cease. It was during the war, that a daring plan to boost the Venetian economy, was made. The economists then believeing in Venetian victory, drafted a plan in which Venice would join the Serbian alliance and engage in a war with rich Bosnia, in order to empty its treasury. The failure in the war, should have affected the plans, but as it was Venice entered the war with Bosnia as planned in August of 1419. It was the same month that the war with Croatia ended.

The completetion of the third Venetian army in 1420 followed with an arrangement of royal marriage with Austria, made it possible for Venice to concentrate completely on the Bosnian campaign. To this date the war had come up to a point where both sides made desperate attacks in order to end the war. The Venetian intervention was decisive. Within months the capital of Bosnia fell, and when the last Bosnian soldiers occupying Beograd surrendered, the peace was made: Venice would fill its treasury with 216 ducats. Economists were thrilled.

However on the diplomatic front the war was not such a success, and in order not to make a "second Croatia" the Venetians organized a royal marriage with Bosnia, and arranged so that Venetian soldiers were free to pass the Bosnian soil.

In October of 1422 news arrive to our court that Bosnia has been annexed by Serbia. We are greatly angered by this, but we choose not to act, not yet... After the declaration of war against Karaman, which Serbia chooses not to follow, our chances of revenge grow bigger.

Our alliance is not the only one attacking Karaman. Ottoman empire and Byzantine both take advantage of their claims in the area and split the area.

Within the years of the Karamani war, our great neighbours fight a war. Serbia and her new allies Wallachia and Moldavia engage in a great war with Hungary, Siedenburgen and Croatia. Luxemburg provided financial support for the latter alliance. It was a war that the Serbs could not handle, and it thus seemed as it was not going to be us punishing Serbia for their transgressions. The war lasting over two years, brought an end to the kingdom of Wallachia, as it was annexed to the glorius realm of Sidenburg. Other peace deals were purely financial, not geographical.

Due to both a well excecuted economy, as well as the Bosnian treasury we are able to pay two of three loans when they are due to be payed in 1424. It was the following year that the news shock the nation as the annual budget is drafted. An immedeate political crisis shocks our land.

The crisis, thank god, does not produce any revolts. However due to the increased tension, we decide to make ties to other nations who then can possibly help us in case of a revolt. The nations of Hungary and Castile thus join the company of Austria in the group of nations blessed with daughters of Venetia.

It is the year of 1425 that the cloud of suspicion whether our citizens are loyal or not disperses. We seek to show our trust in our citizens, in ourselves, by declaring a war to Genoa, a commonly hated enemy of the pope. Our economists also support the motion, as it will surely bring extra trade ducats to our budget. Militants eagerly join the supporters, as it will be a chance to show once again that they can do the job. Navy leaders are especially excited as the fighting will mostly take place in the sea, and thus navy financing will rise.

Just as the soldiers kiss their wives goodbye, ships rise their sails and generals draft their plans, just as the eve of war is to rise upon the mediterranean once more. Then do the Genoans withdraw from the war with the pope. The war has been lost. We have not lost. But the war has...

The war that never happened aggrivated our military. We needed a war. The nation was ready for it. Genoa was out of the question, forgiven by the pope and all... We needed another nation...

We seeked and seeked, nothing we could find. It was up to our arch-nemesis Croatia to be a target of Venetian militancy, once again. Due to a lucky mixup, the Hungarian alliance including Croatia is at war with the pope.

From 1426 to 1428 we fight this war which is mostly conquest, as the forces of our enemies are tied northwards fighting the empires of Lithuana, Bohemia, Poland and many others. We only take Croatia as we do not want to anger the Hungarian giant over the edge.

April of 1428 is marked as the month during which a mutual understanding between Croatia and Venetia is found. Venice will take control of the province of Krain, as well as the Croatian treasury. The pope is pleased to see this humiliation of his enemy, and blesses this border change more than eagerly.

Notes:

-Castile/Spain is strong. It vassalized Portugal.
-England seems to be taking the HYW. (Orleans annexed)
-Byzantium seems to be bugging OE. (Took Adana --> OE can´t annex yet)
-Austrian alliance is alive and kicking. (Austria vassalized all her allies, Bavaria, Baden, Mantua, Milan and Wurtemberg. And the mentioned allies split up Helvetia.)

I hope for your sake, and the sake of the story, that you will change the title to "Four centuries of Ascent." :D

What do you mean by merchant spamming? And whatever it is, isn't that what Venice really did?

Merchant spamming = Sending merchants in packs of four, five or six to gain a CB, when the COT owner embargoes you. (Old SP tactic)

Who is that little nation on the arabian peninsula?

That is Damman. A new nation as from 1.08. One of the "CK to EU2 savegame convert reasons" -nation. I´ve many of them thus far. I hope they die off soon, as I want to see some defections. Preferrably to my glorius realm ;) .

A strange nation indeed. Population of 218. Was annexed after one years or so. (As you will see in the next chapter, which I will begin writing after this).

1429 - 1443

In January Serbia declares a war on Ragusa, continuing their expansionism in the Balkans. The situation is boiling and our intervention is not far away. The Serbians aware of this seek to renew the alliance with the Moldavians, who agree.

The news of the end of the Kalmar Union reach our court and we are informed that the Norwegian throne is to be assimilated with the Danish one. Sweden ends the era of Danish rule, but military alliance is kept, merely as a peace pact between the two giants.

It is in midst of 1429 that we pay our last loans. The economy no longer has to be burdened and with our magnificent budget, we are able to give great dowries for our princesses seeking into marrying foreign princes.

Limited co-operation is begun with other Latin states. Our military advisors are there to witness the fall of Granada to the Portugese hands.

Our diplomats rush to meet the Sultan of Damman, the grand ruler of 220 subjugant citizens, whose "palace" if that tent can be called as such, is attacked in 1429 December and annexed.

Politics have gone very locked up. Germany has finally become peaceful and stable in late 1429 and early 1430, with the end of many wars and rightful peaces. However the alliances are growing very strong and a war can be seen. The alliances of Germany are however, exceptionally clear:

-The Austrian Alliance: (Austria, Bavaria, Milan, Mantua, Baden and Wurtemberg)

Controls everything in the Southern Germany. A few succesfull wars brought an end to all resistance. Switzerland is overrun, and other than nationalistic revolts, the Austrian alliance has no enemies. The Austrian alliance is without a doubt the strongest German alliance, military-wise. The lack of coast and centers of trade are a great disadvantage, and also being locked up between strong alliances prevents all growth.

-The Papal Alliance: (Papal states, Saxony, Würzburg, Hessen, the Palatinat, Lorraine, Münster and Oldenburg)

A strong combined diplomatic and military strenght. However the size of the nations is small, whereas their quantity is large. This causes many problems in the dynamity of the alliance. A lack of clear leadership is also notable. The protection of the pope is without a doubt essential for the alliance.

-Hansa-alliance: (Holstein, Bremen, Mecklemburg, Pommern, Madgeburg, Prussia and Teutonic Order)

A trader alliance without a doubt. Controlling two Centers of trade this alliance is the true economic power of the region. The loss of Danzig is however notable for the monopoliztion of the coast as well as the coast line of Oldenburg. The alliance lacks a leader as well as a grand army.

-Polish alliance: (Poland, Lithuania, Bohemia and Bradenburg)

Big. That is the word describing this alliance. A great manpower base, as well as lots of area. The great disadvantages are poor leadership of the nations, many hostile borders and the lack of quality in the armies.

A map of the alliances:

Alliances of Germany 1430

In March Ragusa ends the war with Serbia taking Kosovo. Apparently we do not need to punish Serbia after all...

Finally complete peace within Europe has been achieved. Some rabble in Asia are killing each other, but that is irrelevant. Peace is here. Peace for all civilized mankind.

But then. In April of 1430 a war broke out. Austrian alliance would go to war with the Pope. Lorraine and Oldenburg leave the Pope. Oldenburg joins the Hansa alliance even further advancing their economic power over Germany. Denmark declares a war to the Hansa alliance, trying to break a path to inland Germany making some profit of its own by avoiding the heavy Hansa tolls.

Sweden the ally of Denmark ends the Northern war quickly by switching to the Pope´s alliance and thus making Denmark chicken out, losing Jylland to Bremen.

Ragusa joins the alliance of the Pope, propably as a preventive measure of being annexed by us.

In March of 1432, after two years of fighting, revolts in Switzerland lead to the independence of Swabia, a minor Swiss country. The allies of Wurtemberg all dismiss the issue, all but Austria who then desperatetly tries to recreate the alliance. However for a year or so the Austrian alliance is at a innerdispute causing a decisive reoffensive.

Genoa and Duchy of Athens had joined the war after one year of fighting. A quick manouver to take Milan, failed and followed by a conquest of the Genoese capital. The Duchy however succesfully landed a division to Mantua and annexed it during the hazy years of 1432 - 1433.

Bavaria survives the crazy years by joining up with the French. In the end Austria fails to reconstruct its alliance. Only Milan and Wurtemberg rejoin. A hasty peace is then made with Austrian alliance losing money and pride.

The Genoan alliance and the Austrian alliance however failed to found a common peace. The Duchy of Athens however succeeded and contiuened onwards in the fields of conquest, by attacking and annexing Albania. Seeing Genoa out of the game, and Duchy as weak, the pope decides to act to furthermore boost his glory and reinstitute good relations with Austria by sharing an enemy.

We also join this war, partly because it is oblieged by the pope, but also because we wish to see Mantua under our flag. The Pope does and always has agreed on our claim over the area and so we go to war.

Our war is timid but succesfull, in 1436 followed by the Ottoman Turks the war is a cakewalk. Howver other more interesting events take place in Germany:

In 1435 another alliance, the most powerful alliance of the world, consisting of England, Burgundy, Aragon and Navarra declare a war on the pope. Furthermore after this declaration lands another pops up, the Hansa alliance also attack the Papal alliance. What is this? A ravolt against the god given power of the Pope?

The good catholics of Poland join the war on our cause declaring a war on the Hansa alliance. All of Germany is now at war, with the exception of Austria, who actually started the whole era.

It is in 1437 that we make peace with the Greeks taking Mantua for ourselves and Albania for the Knights.

The war continues going on Eastwards as the Muscowites now declare a war on the Polish alliance.

In 1438 the Hansa alliance being surrounded by its enemies disperses due to the question of independent Jutland. It is our alliance that guarantees the alliance of this new country. Along with the alliance, goes the war which quickly then ends, followed by a cease fire in other regions as well.

Everything comes to the Balkans as old news. The Serbians choose the wrong time to declare a war on the Hungarians. Hoping for others to join too, they meet a wave of denials. Quickly overrun the Serbian alliance has to give up Bujak.

In November of 1439 Byzantium faces the facts and joins our brave alliance, thus guaranteeing its own independence. The sad war still rages on in the Balkans.

In October of 1440 the bystander of the German wars, France, decides to make the final push of the Hundred Years War by throwing out the English for good. A quick successfull war brings an end to English possessions in France, apart from Normandie and some posessions near the Basque lands. The three year war shows the new ruler of Europe. In the shadows the French had annexed all of their vassals, made an alliance with Bavaria and prepared an army. They now had beaten the strongest alliance of the world!

Burgundy is so ashamed that it swicthes alliances and now joins the Papal alliance accompanying Sweden and some German minors.

The world is now in a break of new age. Wars might be ahead of us. Wars that happened now were just the prologue for the next chapter of history, or so anticipate...

1443 - 1473

In the mid 1440´s small wars go around Europe: Castille trying to expand their African empire, Cuman getting annexed by GOlden Horde, Serbia continuing the destructive line of failed wars againt Hungarian alliance, the Polish and the Hansa clash their swords, Brittany gets annexed by the French...

It is all a mist. Nations are born and destroyed within years.

The wars result in peaces, most of them odd: Sweden gains the control of Kaffa, Oldenburg gains Poznan and so on....

It is in late 1440´s that we recieve news that our garrison in Crete has been destroyed, the local mayor sent to exile, and that the whole island is on revolt. The reason is more than obvious: For a decade we tried to convert the Orthodoxes on the island, telling them that Orthodoxy has died, even the king of Constantinopole has abandoned it.

Immedieatly after hearing the news, we dispatch a force of twenty thousand mixed cavalry and infantry to free the islands. The first attack is fought back, so is the second, and the third, and the fourth... It is not until the fifth landing that we succesfully beat the rebels. A whole of fifteen thousand men were lost, whereas the rebel casualties were something near to ten thousand.

A peace in the region of the Balkans at last: Serbia agrees to give out Bosnia and become a vassal of the Hungarians. Moldavia was annexed earlier by the Hungarians. Peace at last?

Cuman is reborn in late 1440´s. Four times grander as the last time, they win the war of independence losing only some land, and afterwards they ally with the Austrians.

After the expiration of our alliance we make a new one, inviting the Knights and Byzantium. Alliance changes around the world, lead to the destruction of the Center of Trade in Kurland, and its reopening in Hansa-Holstein owned Danzig. Teutonic order is now humbled.

In March of 1452 the Ottoman Empire attacks Byzantium. We immideatly send our troops to help the dfence of Constantinopole. It must not fall!

We observer how the Turkish armies once again prepare to overrun the walls of the grand town, but not this time: The joint forces of Venice, Knights and Byzantium crush the enemy! The force of twenty thousand moslem fighters was thrown back by not more than fifteen thousand Christians, twelve thousand of which were Venetians.

The Byzantine army then marches to counterattack the disarrayed Ottomans, following them to the Province of Bulgaria, which they later besiege and capture.

With the Turkish beaten we also decide to counter attack them. A new division of twelve thousand men, thus equal to our other army in size attacks Hellas, where as our main army goes to Angara and later Smyrna. The knights succesfully capture Taurus.

It is in late December of 1453 that the peace is made: Byzantium would gain the provinces of Bulgaria, Dorbjuda and Macedonia. And we would gain.... Yes what would we gain? NOTHING! The ungrateful fools of Constantinopole leave us with nothing in return of our help.

On the way back from the Turkish lands our army lays a siege on rebel controlled Albania, which is owned by our only loyal ally the Knights. During the siege the Rebels gain independence as the Pope blesses their claims in order to show off to the Patriarch. After our succesfull siege we vassalize the new country in a separate peace, allowing the Knights to reannex the country if they see it justified. However it is Byzantium that eventually annexes Albania.

Arriving home, our military leaders hear the news that Serbia was annexed after trying to escape the vassalship with Hungary.

In 1456 the thrones of Hungary and Siedenburgen grow into one. The claimed counderstanding however proves to be just a lie, as the following year a civil war begins in Hungary. The war lasts a decade or so, and during it Croatia is swallowed up by the Hungarians, and numerous interventious wars are declared, by Austria, Poland and Bohemia. The province of Bujak takes advantage of the civil war and defects to the growing empire of Byzantium.

Many wars take place in the closure of the sixth decade of the 15th century: Austria attacks its Northern neighbour, England fights everyone, Poland is split up and so on. A rather interesting war happens in the last year of the aforementioned decade, when the Danish king attacks and takes all of Southern Sweden, thus unifying his two great kingdoms, Denmark and Norway.

In 1459 another war with the Turks is announced, yet again did the Turks attack Byzantium and yet again do we leave to defend them.

A message from Constantinopole is sent telling us, that no help is needed in defending the city. Our army lead, stationed in Ionian Islands, then decide to attack Hellas. Athens fells quickly and we are hailed upon as saviors. Morea soon also becomes ours. The Turks offer us a deal in which we would recieve Morea. Pope agrees, and as it seems the Greeks can hande the war, we agree the deal sent by the Turks. Hungary and Genoa join the crusade on the Ottomans later.

The Byzantines go Orthodox again. This furthermore will difficult our conversions in the Greek lands. However Ionia has lost main of its Orthodox population in the wars, and so it becomes Christian in midst of 1460´s.

The small asian nations rendesvouz through the Ottoman lands, and slowly but surely the Empire begins to fall.

A third war with Ottomans in 1467 this time declared by the Knights. In this war we face no Turkish resistance apart from fortified cities which we besiege one by one. Venice recieves Kastamonu, Hellas and Smyrna in the peace settlement. Knights take Taurus and Antalaya. The Byzantines are left with nothing.

Hungary has survived its civil war rather well and it is actually victorious in a war with Austria taking Steiermark and Ostmarch.

Here are some maps of the time:

Interesting notes: (Off story)

Observing the map you will see some interesting issues:

1.Bradenburg was annexed. This will of course lead to no Prussia, which is kind of sad. Although a revolt is still possible.

2.England is extremely weak! First time I have seen England fight and lose a war to Sctoland! They are kicked out of France apart from Gascogne, their BB is sky high (20), and their only real ally Aragorn will be eaten by events very, very soon.

3.France is extremely strong and will be even stronger in the future. With Brittany soon gone, it will be a tough break on the North German minors. Although I do anticipate that the Papal intervention (Allied with the North Germans) and the power of the Austrians might just be able to fend off the French, along with interventions from both the Spanish and the English.

4.Hungary is doing extremely well. The strangest part is that we have only fought them, not helped them. They friggin beat Austria! I´ve never seen that before. Now allied with Poland, Bohemia and Lithuania they are a real blockbuster.

5.Poland is kind of sad. Lost the COT in Danzig, lost Poznan and are fighting endless wars with the Baltic nations as well as the New Hansa.

6.Denmark is übergood. I mean they actually beat up the Swedish. They took three of the best areas of Sweden. It will be a real downer for the future of Sweden though...

7.New countries. I mean: Damman, Swabia, Cuman, Jylland that´s for now... They really affect gameplay. Although I am not sure if it is in a positive way.

8.Technologies. I mean it is almost 1480´s and we are still stuck in level 3 of everything! The best land tech in the world is propably 5 or so...

I am really expecting the grand events, as well as the reformation, they might be a whale to write about, but I´ll try....

Anyhow the next chapter will propably be grand, grander than the ones I have written thus far combined...

The eve of grandness (1473 - 1501)

In 1473 two great wars take place: The French alliance clashes swords with the Hungarian forces, and Austria attacks the Pope once again.

Muscowy continues its triumph, after taking Pskov it now attacks the New Hansa, and more specificly Novgorod. There is some talk about claiming an united Russia, and frankly Muscowy seems to be up to it.

Ottoman Empire continues to fall, Ak Kyonkolu already occupies all of the country, except for Rumelia, which is occupied by the Hungarians. Qara Kyonkolu joins the war for glory.

Cyprus is terrified by the growing strenght of the small Asian nations and it seeks our protection by accepting a Venetian ruler to their Isle. A pact of vassalship will surely protect them from the NeoVandal Asian tribes.

The Austrian Empire has gone into decline: With Helvetia in revolt, Modena broken free and Milan annexed by Burgundy, it is clear that there is no turning back. Targetted by the French and the Papal alliance in 1475 even Vienna is temporarily under enemy control.

A small rise in the later period of 1470´s with the Annexation of Modena, Helvetia and Swabia, and pacification of some fronts. The losses in total are Milan to Burgundy and Zürich and Modena to France.

Wars around the world finally become reality to us, with the declaration of a new crusade on the Turks in 1475. This ime targetting Ak Kyonkolu, the occupier of Ottoman lands. Byzantium, us and the Knights attack Ak Kyonkolu and Golden Horde, who earlier took Angora. The Turkish lands soon witness the death of tens of thousands of soldiers. A small spice to the fight is the Ottoman Empire trying to plan its liberation, with revolts organized every now and then.

The war is a miserable failure to us: The Knights being tied up in their own lands fighting the revolts, Byzantium being interested in everything else than helping us, we are alone.

Kastamonu is quickly overrun by the Horde and we are left with no other choice but to give it up to them in a separate peace, as their grand armies are amassing towards Smyrna.

Ak Kyonkolu is another story: Keeping our navy sitting in the Aegean Sea we prevent all attacks towards Ionia and rest of Greece. Smyrna is taken but that is it. Our offensives are targetted to the Armenian lands mainly because of the common religion. Eventually we are able to be triumphant enough to plea for a white peace.

The loss of Kastamonu still burns in our hearts, but at least we could keep on to most of our lands.

Ak Kyonkolu made a peace with the Ottomans during the war to stop the constant revolts. The remnants of the peace deal, the province of Konya, was picked up by the Knights just after the war in 1482. It was this new crusade that made the Byzantine emperor rethink the situation and leave our alliance, making a new one with Cuman.

It is in November of 1482 that we, too, need to rethink our alliances: In the last years of the Austro-Franco war, the French alliance collapsed in to disputes on the question of the Swabian alliance. No country was to follow Switzerland, a new addition to the French alliance, to a war with Swabia. The French saw this a situation for peace. A financial peace was made and the two buggers were to unite in an alliance. Genoa joined this alliance, too, merely as a financial supporter.

Now in November of 1482 the Knights decided to declare a war on this new alliance, the strongest alliance that Europe had ever seen to this day. Would we like to participate?

The choise was made not to follow the Knights anymore, but instead join Byzantium and Cuman in a more calm alliance. The choice of alliances, however result in breaking a peace deal, and we thus lose the respect of our citizens. Revolts soon plague Morea, Corfu and some of mainland Venice.

Muscowy finishes off Novgorod in a decade long war. The lenght of the war was caused first off, by the offensives of the Hansa alliances and the declaration of war by Lithuana, which had guaranteed the Novgorod independence. An annexation eventually took place in 1495. The Russian dream is now complete. Muscowy joins our alliance during the following years.

The changes in the last years of the fifteenth century mediterranean are minimal: France annexes Cyprus and the Knights lose two of their provinces in Turkey to the revolting nation of Seljuk Turks. Only Taurus remains under the Order.

We take advantage of the calm climate and concentrate on our economy. A refinery is built in Crete, and its completetion in 1500, marks the beginning of a new era in Venetian history, in the break of the new century, a promise of a better future is made. And in the honour of this treaty we vassalize Byzantium in 1501.

The future seems dangerous: The French and the Austrians have spoken something about splitting up Burgundy. What ever that means, it can´t mean good. Also empires are being born: Muscowy and Spain are both boasting about uniting the cultural areas into one. Dangerous speak, if you ask me...

Some maps of the era:

Europe in 1501. Alliances with same colour tag. Neutrals in white. The big white blob in the border of Europe and Asia, shows the time to switch pictures.

Asia in 1501. Notice the two warring factions, one in red other in blue. Both fight foreign wars, other in Europe, other in India, but they do clash regularly against each other, too.

In 1501 our alliance goes to war with the Baltic alliance, little involvement do we have in this war, but hearing the news of our war, and especially about its offensive nature, an instructor from the Papal states arrives to our court and pleas that we hire him. His salary needs us to loan some more money, but we need men like him to make our army more efficient.

Hungary continues to boss around Austria in a war 1504 - 1508, taking four provinces from the Austrians leaving back a weak empire... The Empire grows even weaker when the remaining states of Baden and Modena declare independent and later get annexed by the French.

The ancient state of Persia is reborn in late 1504. This will cause great problems to our Eastern enemies, Golden Horde and Ak Kyonkolu.

The Danish alliance falls in 1505 due to the independence movement of Skåne. England later annexes the revoltous state.

We begin to co-operate in the Trade front. Our economy is not one of the most stable ones, and we need to create pacts to secure some stability, even if it burdens our efficiency somewhat. Portgual and England both sign a trade agreement with us.

The war with the Baltic alliance finally ends with Muscowy taking Estland and Livland. Russians seem to be concentrating on the Baltic.

In 1508 we must make a heavy decision: To declare a war on the alliance, consisting of Poland, Lithuana, Bohemia and Hungary meaning a certain death, or to decline the call of our allies and lose a huge political prestige hit. We choose both by first declining and then rejoining. The war goes swell with all of ours enemies´ troops fighting in the North, and we are able to quickly withdraw from the war. The Byzantines took and annexed the Ottomans during the war.

After the failure of the 1511 Summer offensive the Russians back down. Having realized that there was no more success in the front they made peace: Bohemia would gain Livland. An odd turn of events, may I add...

Immideatly after this war, we are forced into another: The Seljuk Turks are trying to liberate the Ottoman capital and maybe even proclaim themselves as the grand rulers of all Turkey. Their alliance is strong, but eventually we are able to wear them off, resulting a financial peace in midst some where near 1513.

Lady luck has not abandoned after all! A weapons manufactory is confiscated from foreign nobles who were planning to defect the province of Krain to the Hungarians. The complexity of the production mechanisms amazes us, and we are to harnass this factory for the good of the nation.

Sweden has concentrated on the Baltic region very deeply in the early days of the 16th century. Albeit very succesfull in the aforementioned Baltic region, the concentration has caused numerous revolts in the Swedish posessions near the Black Sea: Kaffa defected to Cuman. The Swedish gave little attention to this, mostly due to the success of the Baltic: Sweden retook all of its lost lands: Västergötland, Bergeslagen and Småland.

In 1520 the Swedish war machine is on the roll again, this time taking most of Norway and Greenland from the Danish. Also Ragusa gains Iceland.

It was in 1520 that Muscowy declared itself Russia. No-one else was to stand up for the title, so it was commonly acknowledged that Muscowy would from now on be the sole protector of the Northern Slavs.

In March 1523 Reformation of the catholic religion is said to be happening. Some fool, with the ridiculous name of Marthin Luther, has spoken something about saviour being a gift of mercy not merits. The cause is that some Northern people have decided to rebel against the Pope.

It is Holstein in May 1523 to be the first Protestant state to go in history. Prussia follows in June of 1523, bringing upon them the wrath of the Poles. With the Polish alliance punishing the heretics, no other state dares to declare Protestant that year. However in the first day of the new year of 1524, Denmark declares Protestant. In the next year in March Bohemia follows the league. Two months later in May 1525 Pommern goes Protestant.

Religion plays an important role even in our regime. The concrete example being the conversion of Morea to Catholicism in 1526.

In 1526 the Russo-Lithuan war takes another roll, we again delay our joining.

Also in 1526 for some odd reason Bohemia is inherited by the Austrians. Odd twist of histroy, don´t you think? A dead Empire inherits the Grand Protector of the Protestant faith...

With Bohemia gone, it is an easy task for the Russians to break through Lithuana. However with Sweden joining the fun it becomes a bit harder. Russia wins the war with Lithuana taking Jedisan (Near Black Sea) and Tula. Sweden is to go down in history as the first nation who fought a land war with Russia and won, as they close their victory in the peace deal of 1529 taking Karelia, Kexholm and Kola.

The wars meant little for us, apart for the fact that the Hungarians destroyed our new arms manufactory in Krain during one of their occupations.

Sweden became Protestant a bit after their succesfull war.

England, albeit being in decline for a few decades, now opens a COT in Anglia. The concentration on the navy has really paid off, apparently...

A century of not so much decline.

Protestant religion gains a new supporter in 1530, as the nation of Mecklemburg accepts this new religion. All Nordic CoTs are now ruled by Protestant states.

Russia goes to war with a huge alliance of Moslems in early 1532, asking us to join. There now exists a state of war between us and Golden Horde, Uzbek Kaganate, Sibir and Chagatai Khanate.

During the same year our alliance goes to war with Austria and France, whom we are eager to declare a war on, as we share no border with them. Thinking to strike early and strong we sail for Cyprus, but after a failed landing we return back to Venice, from which we plan a new attack on French Italy. A landing then takes place in Modena-Firenze, but our medieval pikes were no match for the French army, armed with Muskets and artillery.

Our army destroyed to the last man, we were to meet the wrath of the French. Luckily for us, they could only attack us by sea. Luckily because just as they ruled the land, we ruled the sea. Our navy was refitted to the best quality and quantity to defend our shores from our enemies. The French navy suffered heavy losses, whereas ours lost not even a full escardon: In the total of twenty five battles we fought around the Adriatic Sea our losses were three galleys. The French lost five warships, eleven galleys and two transport ships.

As a result of our magnificent performance on the sea, we were able to block off all French invaders. The French now came into a dead end, and were happy for the white peace we gave them in late 1536. Not only had we gained a huge boost of political prestige, as the world now looked upon us as the leading nation in navalwarfare, but also the returning victoriuos ships brought back a treasure, a treasure which would change the priorities of Venetian politics once and for all, a treasure worthy of which the huge losses of the war, a treasure of the decade, no a treasure of the century:

Maps, maps, oh so many maps... The French had lost most of their grand navies in endless battles with the Spaniards, resulting in the unification of the mediterranean and the Atlantic fleet. The base of this fleet was in the Ligurian Sea. The French admirals had to do tasks around the world, fighting in the new world and Africa. The French thought that their navy was invincible as long as it moved together. They had thus placed all of their high command on the ships during their thrust on us. Now, as their luck in the seas were not so great, we were able to defeat the ships and capture some of them, along these ships we captured many commanders of the French fleet, some of which had been to the new world themselves in the past. Questioning them, as well as capturing the maps the ships had with them, the navies coming back home were to present us with something unique. Not only did we learn more of the sea they call Atlantic, but also we were to see the excact location of the area they call "The New World". So many times had we heard rumors of it, mostly from the Spanish traders, but now it was all for true!

A company was formed to look into the area. Although the republic was at first reluctant, but after recieving the first golden ducats from our trading post in the area called Standacone, they were more happy to make the needed investements. For quite some time we suffered from inflation, and our merchants lost their competetive edge on the markets, but for such a small price were able to furthermore expand our colonies in the area known by its former owners, France and England, as Canada.

Canada is soon settled by us, at least the amount of what we know of it, we hear tales of other nations close to us, nations which time has not changed...

The immensive amounts of tar, wood and other resources important for building a decent navy, soon flow to our nation, resulting in an even more strong navy.

In the old continent the most important issue of the decade is the fact that due to the collapse of the Papal alliance, we are able to attack Ragusa, taking Kosovo from them. It is with the excuse of this war that the Russians leave our small allaince and seek for glory on their won.

It is July of 1540 that the world is shocked by news, so extreme and so devastating that the leader of our nation is almost about to choke on the wine he is drinking: Austria has inherited the realms of Hungary!!! The little minor, the dying empire, the ridicule of all Europe HAS TAKEN CONTROL OF HUNGARY! Not only does this completely wreck the Polish alliance, make the Franco-Austro alliance the strongest in the world, expanding from the Atlantic to the Black Sea, but also it makes it impossible for us to ever again be at war with France. The danger factor of our region has risen tenfold, at least. For two decades, two long dark and terrifying decades, the alliance lasts...

The aforementioned events even further isolate us from the European theatre, and as such we are able to concentrate on our colonial empire. Calvinism strikes Europe in 1540 but with very little results at first, due to the indirect pressure from the Austro-Franco alliance.

In 1551 the political climate is slightly more refreshing for us, as the French ask and recieve a military access from us, preventing them to strike us with the speed they could have.

In 1560 Cyprus declared independence from France, but was annexed two years later. This event was a prologue for the inevitable, in late 1560 the Franco-Austro alliance breaks down, with Austria declining the call for war against Russia.

The following events are filled with mist, schemes and strong men who refused to play by the book. Austria quickly allies with Burgundy and many of the North German states, thus swallowing the alliance of the Pope. The French are at first unable to ally with anyone else but their financial ally Genoa, but in 1565 with the independence of the Netherlands from Burgundy, they began to build up. An as if the situation was not too tense already, the Palatinat declares Calvinist in 1569 after three decades of Pope-incited force-catholicism. The natural choise of alliance for this reformed state, is of course the Netherlands, and thus France. The Pope is humbled, but has to agree the call of the French alliance, for his own security.

Our alliance during this time, fought some irrelevant wars with our Eastern neighbours. Byzantium gained some land, we did not even fight, all was so irrelevant as we had no gains in that region. However to ensure the welfare of our vassal and thus the stream of money coming from them, we invite both Poland and Lithuana to our alliance in 1569.

In the British Isle, the only visible reform of the latter period of the century is Scotland going Protestant and later reformed.

The world war finally kicks in 1570. France, Genoa, The Palatinat and the Pope declare a war on Austria, Burgundy and Wurzburg. The Netherlands are too busy elsewhere to fight the war. The war ends in 1572 to a very reasonable peace deal: Austria gains Baden, the only French province with German being the dominant culture.

In 1572 as a counter-measure to the reformations of faith in Europe, the Pope begins a campaign for counter-reformation. Spain, the country which has been the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire for half a century in a row, is the first to declare participation in the campaign. Aragon follows, only a year later.

In 1576 Ragusa declares independent from Austria. The thrones of these empires were united only a decade before. We use this chance we have to declare and annex this state. The annexation is naturally blessed by the Pope, as he wishes to see the fall of Austria and rise of France and thus himself.

Papal states goes counter-reformed in 1577. Lithuana went Calvinist in 1590.

In August of 1603 a genious squad leader of our army presents us with a plan to expand the knowledge we have on the new world. We hire him to do the job, and soon he and his companions, Cartographers, soldiers, settlers and other miscallenious people are shipped to Standacone, which by that time had grown into a city.

The man we sent meets the rumoured people, which time had forgotten in the early 17th century. Apparently they are calling themselves Iroquois and Huron. We search the surrounding areas and civilize the wild neighbouring areas, filled with fur animals and naval supply raw materials. Our success in Canada is so triumphant that the revolting states of England seek into our regime. The defections happen in the first century of the seventeenth century. Even the famous refinery of Acadie joins our realm, even further advancing our trade.

During the 17th century very few wars are fought, but large peaceful annexations take place: Austria annexes Burgundy in 1608 resulting in a COT opening in Bohemia, stealing our markets and Spain annexes Aragon in 1613.

It is in January of 1630 that our Canadian empire gains the blessing making it perfect: a Center of Trade is opened in the capital of our Canada, Standacone. The only competition this COT gains is the one from Spanish Zacatecas, which is rumoured to be somewhere much South from our posessions.

Looking back at the century we achieved three great goals: 1.We gained a colonial empire. 2.We cut the tech gap. (From 8 levels in behind to 1 level in behind in land tech.) 3.We improved our infrastructure greatly. (LVL 4 infra and Legal counsel promotions)

Here are some maps of the period in question:

Asia in 1630. Note the humongous Mughal empire, who are the protector of the Sunni faith by the way. (BTW: I forgot the line between Persia and Ak Kyonkolu, they are not allied, I forgot it, sorry.)

Europe in 1630. (Forgot to colour up Bergenhus, it is Danish.)

Us in Canada in 1630. Not much commenting apart from the red dots, which are explained in the picture to be the defections from England.

Sorry for the long delay, but I was in a really busy situation in school and stuff. Game is kinda wierd at the moment. Mughals are überstrong with firearms already (lvl 11). I kinda wish I could see China before its "times of troubles" kick in. British Isles are odd. Russia is doing good. Austria being the white block, and France expanding to Italy. Germany is stranger than normal, Poland and Lithuana eaten up, the Netherlands born and Sweden live and kicking. Exciting maybe, only time will tell......

Great work

Very nice AAR - keep up the good work.

Well done on expanding with Venice. I've played them myself and it's hard to keep friends, especially with potentially huge Austria sitting on your shoulder with a permanent cb on you. Good luck in the colonies.

Amazing TRUE AAR! The rules you set should be followed by all AAR writers. Can't wait to see what your little colonial empire goes for next...

1630 - 1660.

*Sorry for the long delay, but I have first of all been AFK for a month due to miscallenious issues and secondly due to the fact that Angelfire has prevented linking pictures and I therefore had to find a new host for the screenshots. Also Only pictures from 1530 were saved on my HD, so earlier pics are gone, gone for good.*

After numerous wars and conflicts it seemed that Europe had finally found its shape. Russia took control of the center of all Caucasian trade, Astrakan in 1631, and it seemed that with the Russian eagle flying East there was room for peace in Europe.

But tomorrow would prove otherwise as in 1632 the giants, Austria and Russia, clashed. Hundreds of villages were burnt, thousands of men were killed and millions had to leave their homes. The war had clearly two fronts: One in Germany with Russia`s North German allies and one in the North at Baltia, at the castles of the ancient Knight Orders now under Austria`s rule.

The flame of war spread Northwards with Sweden declaring a war on Denmark, who had refused to go into war with Austria. Denmark was stripped of all of its posessions with the exceptions of the capital, Greenland and miscallenious African colonies. The Nordic war lasted from 1631 to 1634.

The war between the giants raged on for five long years, bringing nothing but misery to Europe. Its end in 1637 was both a relief, but also an aggrivation as the results were minimal: Austria was forced to pay some money for the reconstruction of North Germany. Russia had won on paper, but in the long run they had all lost, lost to a faction not even involved in the war, France.

France had grown strong and it was now the economic powerhouse of Europe. We, the Venetians, were much more efficient in what we had, but the French had at least three times our posessions.

It was during the 1630`s that Spain suffered from the first revolts caused by the unification. Some small uprisings took place in the mainland, but for the most it was the Italian people unsatisfied with the change of power. Having failed in winning against the Spanish, the revolters withdrew and took part in returning Apulia from the Pope to Naples in 1640. Although most damage was done to the pope, the defection also meant the end of the Spanish influence in the Papal chambers. After all it was indeed the Spanish who brought it to the Pope as a gift in the first place.

It was in 1636 that our economists show us the first weapons against inflation. The courts of Europe fighting with war related inflation had come up with a solution and now it was in our reach. Appropriate appointments were made to observe the flow of currency and soon our inflation begun to drop.

In 1641 the university of Veneto is opened. Not very big in size, but in importance it was great. For years we had led innovative ideas in the field of trade and infrastructure and now in our university, people would gather to learn the Venetian supreme thought. Wise men from all Italy soon gathered to discuss politics of Europe in our peaceful little capital.

In February of 1643 we are blessed by god. Spain chooses to join our alliance. A relief of political pressure can be felt, as the French are now less eager to attack us.

In 1647 our new Spanish ally presents us with something more than just security, a conquistador! Having been turned down in Madrid, a corageous young man with name of Corraera, chooses to work for us. His expedition begins in 1648 after immensive preparations.

In 1650, two years after the expedition began, Corraera runs into trouble. Having entered America from North, following the footsteps of the first expedition, he soon finds it that to continue his journey he needs money to bribe the natives to let him through. Three boatloads of gold and jewelry is enough to let the tribesmen of Dakota let him pass. Winter, wild animals and natives taking their taxes, Corraera is soon down to less than a thousand men. Being unable to send him any troops, the Mayor of Standacone and ruler of Venetian America, tells him to press on and hopefully he will reach Spanish Mexico.

Following a big river, later in time called Missisippi, he reaches the Coast. First he attempts Eastwards but after running into Indian soldiers, he turns West. He soon passes the English settlement at Matagorda where he hears that England has changed its religion into Reformed.

Crossing another Big River, big enough to be called Grand, more South he hears people speaking Spanish, and he realises he has come to Spanish Mexico, the rumoured place where gold grows on trees, and water tastes like sugar.

The remnants of the expedition, 211 men, enjoy their stay visiting Spanish colonial cities. They soon hear that the Spanish are fighting a war in the South, and eager as they are, they enlist to the Spanish army. Off to South!

With the conclusion of the war, the expeditionaries head back to South, this time following Spanish settlers. On their way towards North they meet a new strange Indian Tribe, calling themselves the Navajo.

One night the settlers tell them about the secret of Tequila, and with the beats of Flamenco pounding, fireplace blazing, the temptation to grab the moment is too great.

Months later a message arrives on a Spanish gold galley to the Venetian court explaining all the above with maps, and with an ending note:

"We joined a group of Spaniars heading North-West, they say it is beautiful there. They said they were heading to place called Las Vegas. Don`t worry we will claim something in there for the name of Venetian republic. We are going to Establish a little Venice in there!"

After some time settlers followed the expedition and claimed some areas Around the newly discovered Southern Coast.

Back home some events took place, worth telling:

The Pope wrote an "edict of Tolerance" as he called it. The Pope had lost all of his lands except for Rome, and he was now ready to make peace with the Protestants.
Russia and France alligned together to stand against the Austrian threat. This new alliance is without a doubt the most powerful on Earth.

In 1660 Venice stands as a small economical powerhouse, with revolutionary trade and infrastructure designs, but poor army and navy.

1660 - 1701

Nothing much happens. Peaceful progress continues. In 1661 we invite Poland to join our alliance, as more security has never hurt anyone. We carry on civilizing the new world and advancing our infrastructure back home. The world is at halt. In 1664 the population of our American capital, Standacone, reaches 10.000.

In the lack of new expeditions we combine our forces with another colonial nation brought to a halt, Portugal. Their knowledge of sea ways proves decisive with transportation of goods to our new cotton producing colonies coasting a water area known as the Gulf of Mexico. We now also know the way around Africa, and we learn new funny names of nations said to locate much East from here, beyond Persia. The Portugese in return learn the ways of the North-America.

In the spirit of this new revival of exploring we hire a leader for the third expedition to America. Transported to Mobile, our new colonial city, he begins by furthermore cartographing the natives, then moving on East to California and eventually going South to see Portugese Brazil for his own eyes.

In the spirit of the revival of colonialism a shipyard is built back home to correspond to the needs of overseas transportation. The nation is so excited with this new project.

England goes back Protestant in 1672. The conversion brings an end to the long freud between the two religious factions of the kingdom and in the spirit of the build for peace, a Center Of Trade is opened in Alleghany. Although beautiful in idea, the Alleghany COT steals our market in North America, halving our profits.

As the new expedition heads South for Brazil they see revolts everywhere. Disguising themselves as British they are able to pass through safely. Seeing their opportunity as a profession as the mayor of a new colony, they decide to start inciting the rebels even more. The whole of Mexico is at flames of rebellion.

In 1675 Portugal furthermore closens our ties by leaving her old alliance in order to join ours. The alliance is enstrenghtened with a military access. With the signing of this treaty it is now possible for the third expedition to continue its journey, and so it does...

Going around in Portugese Brazil, popping at Cape Horn and seeing Incas everywhere, the expedition decides to return home and get that long needed state to govern. The city of Caracas is incited to join Venice and so the expeditionaries settle down. The third expedition is over....

In 1680 the Byzantines break the peace which has lasted for three decades now, by attacking the knights. After the unsuccesfull war, whichs ends in Byzantium losing some money, they continue their aggressive behaviour by attacking Ak Kyonkolu.

The Turkish troops move through Byzantine provinces and in December of 1682 they are besiegeing Smyrna. Our troops are then mobilized and ordered to move in, soon the Turks would be crushed, but history decided otherwise...

In December of 1682 Austria declared a war on us. Ak Kyonkolu hears this, sees its chance and uses it. Smyrna would have to be sacrificed in order to prevent a two front war.... Reluctantly we accept. The last Orthodox province leaves our realm and we are able to use our troops against Austria.

The war is bitter. Austrian division cross the border in many areas, but their quantity in our front is small, as the Emperor has prioritized Poland much higher. Our cash reserves come into use when we hire all the mercenaries of Italy to our army. Soon we are able to attack with two grand armies, 15.000 men in each. Our plan is a simple "pincer movement", the pincer closing in on Vienna of course. Reserves are prepared and sent as reinforcements as they get ready. The success of our attack is great. Within weeks we are able to bring the Austrian eagle to its knees. Tirol, Salzburg, Odenburg and Presburg taken we move on to Vienna which is captured in June of 1684.

The fall of Vienna demoralizes the whole of Austria, armies sent to besiege our Southern provinces begin to fall back and reorganize. The Austrians fail to create enough troops to recapture Vienna through reorganizing, so they decide to retreat all together. The only province that they managed to capture before their hasty retreat, Kosovo, is soon retaken by the Spanish troops sent to help us.

The Portugese, being unable to help us on the field due to their poor manpower, send us advisors that help us build a naval manufactory in Veneto for construction of artillery to defend the city.

The Austrian armies amass quickly in Hungary and begin moving as an arrow towards Vienna. Their assault on Odenburg is retalieted in such a fashion, that they retreat back to Pest, from where they are sent North to Poland. The counter-offensive on Vienna has failed.

When Byzantium ends its war with Ak Kyonkolu taking a few provinces in the Caucasus region, it seems that we are able to attack second time. Loimbardia, Croatia and Bosnia are captured within months. The Austrians are now able to dispatch a few brigades to recapture Salzburg and to halt our offensives in the North.

Poland is forced to peace in 1686. With most of its territory taken, it can not resist to the harsh new borderlines that will split the nation in two.

The collapse of the Northern front brings an end to the fighting in the Southern front, too, as now both sides begin to reinforce their lines. The peace is humiliating for Austria, and a very succesful for Venice: Croatia and Lombardia to Venice and Livland to Spain. (Spain attacked the Baltic region)

Map of the war.

It is now that we look around us and notice how things played out in other areas: Spain took our old province Smyrna from Ak Kyonkolu, perhaps as in revenge for us accepting the defection of Caracas. Russia moved its capital to St Petersburg in order to furthermore open up to the west.

Austria then retakes its honour by beating Russia up in a short Blitzkrieg, lasting from the December of 1686 to June of 1687. As a result the Austrians recieve Wielkopolska.

The Austrians then try to replay their success of the Blitzkrieg against their Northern neighbours. The attempt ends into a failure, as in the peace of June of 1689 Austria has to give up four provinces to Saxony and Oldenburg.

France annexes Naples in 1692. This means the end of all Italian nations, but one and that is us. Map of Italy divided in three.

Revolts in Spanish Mexico continue. The official scapegoat of the uprisings of the Indian population is Navaho. The rulers of Navaho are said to have encouraged Indians to unite and break free from the oppression of the white man. Spain punishes Navaho because of that by annexing them in 1694.

Map of the Mexican revolts.

Our first gold mine is opened in 1695 in Monterrey, California. With inflation under control, the mine will hopefully prove to be a big cashcow for the nation.
