Now, the only right thing to do, would be to continue this awesome AAR as Bosnia, the faithful ally deserted by its liege! -- Shame on all things Venice!

That's what happens when you swim with the sharks at the deep end of the pool. :D

You could try to go for India? I don't know how hard it is to conquer and control it but it must be possible? Or the East Indies?

I just hope your story doesn't suffer now that Venice seems secure!

Storey, for the fun I've had reading your tribulations both here and in earlier stories, you are hereby nominated the WritAAR of the Week! C'mon over and take a bow.

Congrats!

Oh no! No more Siena DOWs

Not in the sort term but there are things going on a few years down the road that could change that. But I’m not saying what.:D

Wow, you're all nice and cozy, cuddled up in your snow-white Austrian comfort blanky.

Good of you to finally have a strong ally, even if it means you'll be at war for the rest of the game. Hey! At least your alliance won't expire anytime soon!

Seriously, I want to see how the next few wars go, to see if they are noticeably different from past experiences. Maybe you can gain some provinces again?

I thought when I joined Austria that it would indeed be one war after another considering how many they have been in over the past couple of decades but it didn’t turn out that way. I wonder if the AI is programmed to be less aggressive if the human joins their alliance? Anyway I do work around that little problem.;)

Enewald said:

Nah it should be afraid of me. I do put the Austrians in to a difficult position later in the game.

Just be careful about Tordesillias areas and the Spanish ability to take your colonies at will, without a DOW, barring strong troop presence. (I forgot about it more than once).

Duh! I forgot about that little problem. At least I only have trading posts and they are all on islands so maybe that will protect them unless I find myself at war with Spain.

Interesting. I’ve had a string of Doges with good to excellent dip rating so I’ve been able to succeed in Royal marriages with several countries around Europe. Not really to many and more to try to modestly improve my relations, which are still quite low with most of Europe.

aldriq said:
Finally!!! I guess you won't miss Bosnia now Have you decided yet how to divide the world between you and Austria?

Well I don’t think I’m quite ready to write Bosnia off. I kind of like them and they’ve proven to be very useful so let’s see what happens with them.

parachute said:

Now that would be interesting but I’m afraid that since the Ottomans have a hankering for Bosnia it might be a very short lived AAR.:D

Indeed and the sharks have not gone away as you will soon see.

Qorten said:

Right now I can’t see India but the East Indies area possibility. I do plan on expanding with trading posts just to see how hard it is to hold on to them but major colonization is not in my plans. Could change we’ll just have to wait and see.

Why thank you. It’s been awhile since I’ve done an AAR so I’m honored you picked me. Oh and Venice may be finally able to relax a little but it’s not quite out of the woods yet.;)

I take a look around and see that Spain just annexed the Incas. So both the Aztecs and Incas lost out to Spain.

Another event.
1538Trade-1.jpg

I went with” Fix and Clean”.

June 1539 and Austria is as quiet as a babe sucking their thumb but France Spain, Savoy and Genoa are engulfed in a series of wars against Lorraine, Portugal, Saxony, Cleves and Hanover. Soon followed by France and her allies fighting against Leinster, Scotland and England.

This really hurt.
1539Venice-1.jpg

A nice event but since I’m already at +10 it doesn’t help me.
1539Government-1.jpg

December 1541 and I reach {Late Medieval} naval tech 7. I know peace isn’t as exciting as war but seriously I need this period of peace to continue so that I can get an edge in technology or at least catch up to the Ottomans.

I decide to stay with some naval investment and adjust my slider when Crete suddenly revolts and although I defeat the rebels I still lose control on the fort and have to start a siege. Damn.
1541-1.jpg

In March 1542 I revoke military access to the Ottomans. I then watch their 17,000 man army in Dalmatia start to lose men to attrition month by month. Brought a tear to my eye watching them whither away.

December 1542 and I recapture Crete. Much rejoicing in the land.

August 1543 and I expand my trading post in the Bahamas.

Another slider opportunity. At first I wanted to move toward innovative but that would cost me missionaries and I have a feeling that if I’m successful in my many and wondrous plans I’m going to need them.
1543Slider-1.jpg

So I decided to go toward defensive again. Eventually that siege bonus will be mine.

October 1543 and I see that Liguria lost it’s COT due to lack of competition. Have to admit that caught my by surprise.

I continue just for the fun of it to expand my trading empire.
1543Barbados-1.jpg

In February 1544 my alliance expires with Austria and I ask them to join a new alliance with me as the leader and they agree. I ask Mantua and Bosnia to join and they also agree. Once again I have my faithful allies in my alliance. Might not have been the smartest thing to do but I don’t care. Life is good.

May 1544 and I reach (Late Medieval) naval tach level 8. I’m catching up to the leaders in naval tech.

I’m starting to look around and find that Hungary and Bohemia have disappeared and have been replaced with Transylvania (Didn’t catch exactly when it happened) who are a vassal and are allied with the Ottomans.
1544Transylvania-1.jpg

A possible weakness in the Ottoman alliance? A tempting target? A lure for the unsuspecting wide mouth bass?

Deny new tariff was the only way to go.
1545trade-1-1.jpg

September 1545 and the Ottomans add Algiers to their Empire. Okay maybe they are finally getting big enough to take down... maybe.

Remember when I revoked military access to the Ottomans?
OttomansinDalmatia2-1.jpg

Well they finally decided to leaved. They started with 17,000 and left with less that 6,000.

I am suddenly having problems downloading to my photobucket account. Hopefully I’ll figure out what’s wrong and continue this AAR especially since things really heat up in the next few years!

If I remember correctly, Hungary disappears and Transylvania is created out of one of the event chains from the battle of Mohacs. Basically the Turks kill most of the nobility in Hungary during the battle and, in order to maintain order afterward, support the prince of transylvania as thier vassal ruler of the area (hard to maintain tax gathering and law protection if you don't have anyone alive and in possession of the land).

Ah, the joys of watching your enemies' armies attrite away to (near) nothingness. Death by stupidity... :)

More peace, Joe? I am, frankly, at a loss at this strange behavior. I mean, yes, it's sensible, but since when did you let sensibility get in the way of a nice round of continent-shattering warfare? :p

So was I. I think they will be of use although not in the way I first envisioned.

Interesting. The way the game handles it is to split Transylvanian in two parts, part Bohemia and part Hungary with Austria in between. I’ve a feeling that’s going to make it difficult for Transylvania to survive but we’ll have to wait and see.

Besides, they are a great excuse to go to war with the Ottomans... what can possibly go wrong now?

Funny you should mention that.

To quote an old TV show. “Patience grasshopper. The future is revealed to the one who takes the time to look with both eyes open.” Not sure what that means but it sure sounds wise.:D

Found a work around since my computer will no longer down load to Photobucket. Not sure why but my virus protection program found some mean looking stuff earlier in the week and cleared them out. Now down loads no longer work.

We have an event.
1545Galley-1.jpg

It doesn’t take a genius to select Pressgang. I shuffle around my ships and spread them evenly around my fleets.

October 1545 and I reach naval level 9 (Late Medieval). Bonus effect Bronze Cannon Armament. I stay with Naval research because it will only be a couple of years before the next level is reached.

The Ottomans go to war.
1545Ottomanwar-1-1.jpg

Could there be an opportunity in this?

I decide to look around and see if what the Mamluks are doing to support the Ottomans
1456shipmove-1.jpg

The heart land of the Mamluks is open for exploitation. Maybe…

Unfortunately the Ottomans win the war before I can possibly get ready to attack. They add Sivas to their empire. They also ask me for military access. I tell them to go piss in the wind. For some reason they are not amused and our relations suffer. Hey I didn’t tell them to piss’ into’ the wind did I?

I take a look at Transylvania and it will cost me 3 stability points to declare war, which I really don’t want to lose so a CB must be had if I go that route. I have a permanent CB against the Ottomans so that would be the sensible way to go. Austria is at +86 with Venice. I should improve our relations to make sure they answer our call to arms. I would like to upgrade my forts but I don’t think I will be able to afford it at this time. I must recruit more men before I can do anything. Money is precious and I can’t afford another increase in inflation without a convincing victory.

March 1547 and the Ottomans add Kouban, Daghestan and Azow to their empire from their war with Crimea. I feel a certain vague sense of satisfaction about that. Who would have guessed?

I’d like to know who the hell thought it would be a good idea to let the Ottomans grow before attacking? Wasn’t it Stuyvesant? Yea he’s the guy! Mutter, mutter...

August of the same year and the Ottomans win their war with Astrakhan and get Orenburg in the peace agreement. Sigh. I think it’s time to get down and dirty with the Ottomans but how?

Everything is moving along at a peaceful pace when the Ottomans remember some unfinished business.
1547Bosniawar-1.jpg

Problem solved on how to pick a fight with the Ottomans. I of course join my ally.

I move my fleets out of their various ports except for Crete.
1547Crete-1.jpg

I think you can see why.

Finally I have my fleets placed and ready.
1547Fleetaction-1.jpg

And so it begins…

Congratulations on your WotW!

It tipped me off about the existence of this AAR (and the FtG forum); I've just got to the end - and I feel exhausted just reading it. Congratulations on sticking it out against an AI apparently determined that you wouldn't. At least the memories of the country-that-shall-not-be-named are probably well covered-over by now.

So now you have the war you wanted. And a big Austria as an ally. And Bosnia as well (who may just be more useful). And Siena, just waiting to stab you in the back. No, I didn't say that. :) What I will say is - all the best!

While this isn't quite as relevant as it would have been a decade or two ago, I had too much fun composing it to give it up now - enjoy:

From "The Courts and Customes of the Lands of Italie"
by Sir Francis Knollyes, sometime Ambassador-at-large for His Majesty King Henry.

One of the most singular customs of these lands, practised most widely in Siena and Florence and the foothills of the Alps, but also in diverse other places around the Middle Sea and elsewhere in Europe is that of Dodging (or Dancing) the Doge. It customarily takes place on St Mark's Day and at Christmas and also at other times.

A large puppet or manikin of cloth and wicker (the Doge) is garbed in the red robes of Venice, and trinkets and sweetmeat and tokens of indulgence are tied to its limbs and dress with ribbons. The Doge is then hung by the neck from a suitable tree (or, within doors, from a suitable beam). The major participants in the ritual are blindfolded and equipped with stout staves. With these they strike hither and thither about them, attempting to knock loose the riches the Doge holds, but most often finding each other and manytimes causing injury.

It is singular how often the Doge survives these exercises unscathed.
