I haven't found anything which says that Venice paid Croatia tribute.
I was wrong, they paid tribute to Narentine pirates to grant them safe passage through Adriatic. Venice later defeated them around 990s and secured most of Dalmatian island and Doge of Venice proclaimed hismelf 'Dux Dalmatinorum'(Duke of Dalmatians).
also haven't found anything to support your suggestion that Venice could have Istria.....except perhaps that Istria in 1066 is not part of the Great Croatian Fatherland and therefore expendable?
Excuse me? What is the rason for this offensive atitude?!
Why would he have to sign a treaty with the Doge as early as 840 if Venice had no control?
To secure the peace perhaps? Croatia was by that time christenized and Croatian rulers obligated not to wage war on their christian neighbours if not attacked first.
That's funny how you can create yourself Duke of Dalmatia and yet not have any land there.
Venice controlled the islands and by that Doge of Venice created himself 'Duke of Dalmatia(ns)'
(I use this website because it references several different sources.)
Most of your exceprt are taken out of context.
Out of curiosity, was Croatia ever part of the Roman Empire or was Diocletian actually emperor of a greater Croatia?
Again you are very rude....I will report this, be sure of that.
I am neither Italian nor Croatian; I simply think Venice probably had greater influence over the area by virtue of controling the sea.
If the consensus is to just give Venice claims on the area then I guess that will have to be acceptable.
The point here is wheter Venice controlled the coast. It did not until much later after 1066. Most people don't understand the nature of these semi-autonomous cities in Adriatic at that time. With the invasion of Slavs and Germans larger cities became semi-autonomous city-states who fought for control over Adriatic trade routes. Venice succeeded in being stronger then other Adriatic cities such as Zara(Zadar), Split(Spalato) and Ragusa(Dubrovnik). In the end Venice even controlled them.
This has nothing do with "great croatia"(whater that is) or anything similar...however it has something do with facts...I hope you know what that is...
