Vassals pressing claims of "Torf" the dungboy......

Playing as the King of Sicily my counts are endlessly pressing claims of "Torf - the 78 year old dungboy" on the ruling dukes. At one point, all five of my Dukes were fending off bizarre wars from their idiot vassals. I understand this is WAD, but for the love of Pete is it annoying.

Count Tybalt of Leece : "Gee, Torf has a claim on Apulia. Sure he's 78, childless, and possessed, not to mention Duke Oswyn of Apulia is the greatest guy ever, but I think we should overthrow him. "

Tybalt's wife Emma d'Hauteville ( ie. THE DEVIL ! GOD do I hate this woman ! ) : "Yes my love, oh and thank you for marrying me after my husband died when I turned 39. Sucks we don't have any kids together, but hey we have each other. Soon Torf will be Duke, I just can't stand that Oswyn dude, right Pookems ?"

Tybalt : "Yes love, Oswyn is TOO nice, something is definately wrong. Call my war council, I'm too stressed, ill and maimed to do it myself."

Had it happen myself quite a few times now, and like you said, they always press some random childless 80 year old. It's even more annoying when the claimant is a raving lunatic.

EDIT : I like the way Duke Dungboy sounds though.

Yeah. The problem is that as it stands, vassals revolt simply to revolt. They don't actually consider whether the new liege would be helpful to their aims, just like they don't consider it for Independence. Dukes don't have Crown Authority, or the vassals might have gone for that instead. I've never seen a <change succession> faction either, come to think of it - Elective Succession factions should be far more common than random schmo claimant factions.

well we have to play different games then ... in at least half my games since factions came around, France have had wars for elective succession which were won (usually with Burgundy or Flanders in the drivers seat)

Yeah 70 relations seem a very high bar for pushing through random claimants.. Would like it if vassals were much more likely to push for lowering Crown Authority / Vassal levy (doesn't exist yet of course) / Succession laws at around 20-70 relations. They shouldn't join random claimants unless they liked that claimant much more (about +30 difference)

I've never seen a succession change faction - but, on the other hand, I rarely pay attention the civil wars going on outside my realm. I see spades and spades of claimant ones, though. A reasonable amount of lower CA and Independence ones, though I've seen one dude start lower CA factions for both my Empire title and my King title. Usually it's either/or though.

In my current game, while my own expansion has more or less halted, I've been regularly called to defend the king of Denmark who is from my dynasty, from his "loyal" subjects (or subject rather) who at every turn tries to press some random dudes claim on the kingdom. And to not get too repetitive about it, lower CA too.

The funny thing is, that this duke seems to control the duchies of Skåne and Slessvig, and also the county of Småland and the ruler subjected to the rebellion never punishes the traitor or the imprisoned claimant in any way, despite having absolute authority. He always let's them walk after holding them in the brig for a while. Only to face another similar rebellion a few years down the line, and only with the help of my retinues able to beat the traitor armies...

I have had a few like that myself. It's so interesting how we really start to hate some of these characters as if they're real people. LOL.

Vassal tries to put a weak ruler with no clear heir. I'd say that's not entirely a bad plan.

The problem with that is that the heir will default to the closest relative, so you don't get messy successions nearly as often as you would in real life... which means that it will often default to a strong, successful relative, sometimes the very person that was deposed. I've actually seen the AI pull that one.

I've seen wars like this exceptionally often in some of my vassal kingdoms. Once the crown of Mauretania changed hands 10 times within ten years. There was a woman who was made queen 4 times only to lose it again within a couple of weeks. Really funny to watch

That's what I thought of. If I were a powerful vassal, I'd much rather have an old senile weak King than a young powerful one.

Not to mention, every succesful revolt reduces the Crown Authority...

While there was a thread of dynasties that folks hate, I don't think there was one for individual characters. For some reason Emma d'Hauteville in all my games as Sicily is the most conniving woman I have seen yet.

Wait a minute, isn't it possible that somehow if this Torf guy dies, one of his vassals inherits the throne? So maybe we have all been deceived, and they actually DO work for themselves?

No, usually this Torf guy isn't landed, and if he dies, my king gets the title of Duke of Apulia back. Perhaps they hope I'm going to give it to them for overthrowing Oswyn, whom I tutored and became friends with. Errr.....NOT !

It isn't that bad, I saw numerous wars for independence that were actually won by the rebells, even against bigger realms.

What doesn't make sense though, are the wars to press a claim.

This happened to me once. Starting as a count in Byzantine, plotting to be Emperor, I had systematically weakened the empire.....funny story, a few years back, the HRE pressed a claim on the whole ERE, but the new HRE didn't inherit it (still feudal elective).....and anyway, so the ERE's in chaos and all the Byzantine vassals hate the new Emperor, and so they plot to install a 60 yr old mayor with bad stats to the Imperial Office.........ERE is now open elective......so ridiculous
