Am I missing something here, is there no way to get western nations to give you trade power aside from going to war with them every time your truce ends (or asking them, but then they won't give you much)? I make states protectorates but they inevitably westernise and stop being protectorates. At which point i'd like to vassalize and keep the benefits (without the huge core costs) but that doesn't seem possible? How do you deal with this? Playing as Portugal, I'm trying to control trade everywhere. I can do it with ships (800 ships atm) but I would like a land presence too.

Guess I'll just make vassals and forfeit land trade power if there is no other way :-\

Vassals never gave trade power, only protectorates. And it depends on your relations and how strong you are but I could easily get nations to give me more than 50% of their tradepower late game with France (mainly because it improves their opinion of you somehow, which I used to vassalise/protectorate nations).

Just by asking? Did you need large positive opinion to do it? I'm getting embargoed by about 10 nations at the moment which is the opposite lol.

With good relations I can often get up to 50% trade power from a trade deal, the same as from protectorates. They must have a good opinion of you to do so.

Just annex important centres of trade and estuaries and you should be fine.

I'm not sure 20 bonus trade is really going to cut it lol, you can get that from 2 ships. I guess just spamming end nodes with ships & relying on downstream bonuses is the only way to dominate really. For instance right now I have 4k trade power in Ivory Coast purely from downstream. If I stick ship stacks in Malacca (to control East & SE Asia) and Gulf of Aden (to control India) it will work good. I'll make some inland vassals to increase manpower limits and annex later to control in land trade I suppose. Takes a long time to annex though for not much benefit which is why I'd prefer to just get it in a deal. But improving relations with everyone is impossible when you're stealing all their trade that they rely on.

Alliance + guarantee + some improve relations can get you 50+% quite easily if you are large enough in relation to them. Can be more valuable than a vassal even, if you don't need the troops and FL.
