  • Europa Universalis III: Chronicles
I simply can´t get my dukes and even counts to stop fighting each other. Supposedly, with an increase in royal authority they do stop, but that is not happening; I have maximum authority but they continue waging their private wars and making a mess of my ducchies, with the strongest ones becoming even more powerful and getting ideas (such as overthrowing me). I began as Navarra because I wanted the flexibility of female heirs and the possibity of naming female countesses and duchesses and now, in 1380, I have all Spain, most of Africa down to Mali and Abissinia, a few counties in the Black Sea plus a dozen of counties within the Holy Roman Empire, and when I get new territories I try to balance their power giving the weaker dukes the new counties, but almost immediately they begin again trying to snatch them from each other.
Is there a way to control them?

Yes: establish medium crown authority or better in all the kingdoms you rule, and all the kingdoms, empires, or other areas in which somebody else rules, but you have counties and dukedoms. If this seems like a deliberate attempt to slow down your growth by Paradox, you are correct. ;)

So if you have, say, a duke in Denmark that's attacking a count in what used to be a Norwegian province but is now one you own, and you're Denmark's ruler with medium or higher crown authority, check to see what Norway's crown authority is. Chances are it isn't medium. After a period of time the crown authority laws will re-conform to fit the status quo, but until then, life will be very interesting for you.

Even if the crown authority is at medium or higher, they can still start wars through plots. Very annoying. In my Persia game I had to wait like 13 years before some idiotic count and duke resolved their petty dispute so I could switch to agnatic-cognatic succession (having no sons, I was trembling the whole time for my ruler not to die)

Yeah, the game rules have changed over time. Used to be, a decent crown authority stopped all wars within the counties and duchies in your de jure lands, but now it appears a count within a duchy can get into a war with their duke. -And for more fun, each can bring in allies. I've got a situation like that right now, and there appears to be no way to completely stop this. Higher crown authority will call a halt to duke-on-duke and count-on-count wars, but that's it.

If your playing as a lowly count it would be very boring if you could never go to war. And it seems rather odd historically. Higher crown authority stops petty bickering but nothing stops serious disputes like revoking titles.
I was count of mortain and I couldn't expand because of crown authority. Duke of normandy revoked the title of a count next to me - then beat him down. I figured I was next so I saved up gold. Sure enough he tried to revoke my title and I rebelled. Hired some Mercs and got independance.
The stupid thing is that my liege was now the king and he simply transferred my vassalage back to the duke!
I think they need to fix this so you can't be vassel transferred back to who you fought independence from.

Thank you Bertouch. I don´t know if it´s a bug in my computer, but with the highest crown authority for over 100 years, they still fight each other. In fact they become so strong after grabbing land from the weaker lords that shortly after my first post, my new queen was deposed by one duke and I couldn´t do anything. But just as a fluke, some months before, the Pope had called a crusade on the Holy Roman Empire because the Emperor had the peregrine idea of becoming cathar, I had joined in, and my queen, although imprisoned, ended up having Baviera. Happily, the new king of Navarra was a half-brother and with a few judiciously selected assasinations, I got back the throne of Navarra. But, of course, I got a HUGE hit on prestige while doing it. Thank you vitek69, for your pointers. You have an interesitng personality.

AI trolling level 100:D On a more serious note, you could go to war as a count if the crown authority is lower than medium. I see your point though, I personally would like an option for the liege to resolve such disputes in his own realm, having more options if you have the "just" trait for example.

@GermanSuarez: Thank you:D Always happy to help:]

I think there should be an intrigue plot to force your vassals to make a white peace. It should be relatively difficult to do because you would need support from others vassals and relatively high diplomacy and intrigue values. Also, AI should be able to use it against vassals fighting each other. In this plot, the vassals should either obey the overlord or the overlord should a legit reason to imprison them.
