Greetings fellow paradoxians ;-)

My Question: How do I control warfare actions of my vassalls?

I wonder if I call a war, shouldn't I be the one to be asked wether they may attack here or there in order to have a coordinated front. Shouldn't I be the one who leads a siege even though I am not present in order to produce the province to my individual of choice?
I keep having masses of small vassal armies running into enemy territory starting the siege and I have to end it and dont get a call? Vassals especially as I understand Japan of olde should be lying in the dust being pleased to do as thier liege tells them if not head off!!! Those rats do not even submit if I claim a title back having 100 honor. I dont feel like a liege here but like a big monkey the lice can walk on in order to have thier party uninterrupted by smaller apes.

I am talking myself into rage here I want to command ;-) Give me some advice please.

A small comparison: Romania, Hungary etc wouldn't have put a foot in front of another if Germany wouldn't have told them to do. Neither would have Canada (no offense mates, but you simply coordinated youselves in order to achieve the best possible outcome with the uk and us simple and smart as that)
A more matching comparission: Had the holy roman empire declared war no flaming Baron Duke or the like would have gone off fighting on their behalf.

I had an idea of how it was handled in HOI3 with those strategic objectives you set for allies. It would be nice to set objectives for them and be like "Jim and Bob go X I will go Z" and if they listen they get honor if they don't well off with their heads.

You dont. And that was the decisive feature for me.

It removes the necessity of managing wars and let you focus on three or four large armies, much better for tactical moves and strategical targeting.

Besides, provinces are more or less equal worthwise but do not stand on the same strategical location though.

Another point, not mattering enough, is that you should always be teetering on the verge of civil war. Vassals going on their own to build up their own power to challenge you (when a clan leader) has potential.

With the hard cap of 5, you also have to conquer for your vassals.

Interesting mix. Does not show enough though.

When I get bigger, I actually like using only retuines, my own and my vassals'. And then if it's needed start drawing levies. I also don't know how historically accurate it would be. I suspect the wars in this particular period were quite chaotic and disorganized affairs.

This.

While mobilizing a levy will boost your troops, it also removes most of the defenders of that province for awhile. So if an enemy army enters it, and sieges, before the province has time to recuperate it's internal levy numbers then that army can quite easily assault the castle and take it over quickly.

So I prefer only mobilizing levies that are in the least danger of being invaded, when I need more troops. Mobilizing the levies on my 'frontline' provinces with the enemy is a big no-no unless I'm desperate for more mobile soldiers. Those frontline levies are needed for delaying enemy sieges as long as possible.

Hey guys,

thanks for the answeres, still I do not see my initial question answered other than what Chien wrote.
I still think it cannot be that a vassal of yours interferres unasked in a war you initiate. Even if he is allowed to participate he is bound to the rules you declare.
And that is because it is vital for your political and strategical enviornment to point out the provinces which are to be taken and who is going to get them.
It simply cannot be that a small vassal comes around with 250 Soldiers starts a siege and you enter the siege somewhat later with the 5000 needed but you dont get the province as the liege you are.

Don't know but for me there has to be done a whole lot about warfare here.

If the liege could always take over sieges, then the player would have no hope of conquest if he starts a game as a vassal.

Agreed, one of my favorite parts about this game is while those lords have pledged loyalty to you they are by all means free to control their troops however they like. Should a Daimyo want you dead he could withhold his troops from a vital battle (maybe in a big multiplayer game? The AI isn't that devious) and then declare his independence during your most vulnerable moment.

This gave me a lot of anxiety at first too, but then I realized that I'm just going to give the province to a vassal anyway so why shouldn't they just capture it themselves.

To the OP:

European feudalism is not directly analogous to Japanese feudalism; things do not necessarily work the same way.

Also, you ARE controlling all of your 'army'. The only units under your vassals direct control are their own personal retinues, despite what the manual says. Retinues are extremely tiny, and the amount of regiments depends on how many titles a character has. If they have huge amounts of retinues available, you let them accumulate too much power and should try revoking some titles to get them back under control. You want most of your vassals to be one province kokujin guys, so then should only get 1k soldiers/ea. Which isn't really enough to siege or capture additional land, unless you are silly enough to let them control a siege and then provide the manpower for the assault for them.
