The current setup is still imperfect. My problem now is that playing as Russia, i've gone to war with Poland (1617 scenario) and not wanting to take a big badboy hit for Ukraine, I took the provinces and released a vassal Ukraine. The problem now however is that every 5 years Poland is picking on what looks to be a weak Ukraine, drawing me into the war. Obviously I have little difficulty in smacking the Poles about, but as soon as I peace out (Ukraine as the one declared war on is the leader) Poland will just come in and make a mess out of my vassal. I'm utterly unable to protect Ukraine simply because Ukraine will never make peace with Poland until after I do.

I'm not sure how best to fix the situation as I understand this is to fix some exploit - yet it has unfortunate consequences like the above. I remember at one time we had a system where the country with the highest vp's was the leader, I always thought that worked rather well. Obviously though there were problems as we still don't have it...

So yeah, short of editing the save file every 5 years or utterly destroying Poland i'm not sure what to do here.

I totally agree, vassel-war leaders are a bit of a problem.

I think that players should be able to turn-off this "feature."

Three ideas come to mind:

1) allow this "feature" to be statically turned off at game start ( perhaps by game/scenario editing or an option button at game creation ),

2) allow this "feature" to dynamically be turned off ( by sending a diplomat to your vassel that gives it permission to peace out ), or

3) have the vassel-war leaders give up war-leader status.

One could, but really I can't justify the cost in doing so. It would be an expensive, long war and eventually to get other provinces that I need i'd have to break the vassalization again - a costly thing in itself. I shouldn't be forced to go through all this just to ease my problems defending Ukraine.

Luckily however, Poland has been largely worn out by a series of wars between Russia/Ukraine, Brandenburg and Sweden. She hasn't dow'ed for quite some time now, i'm thinking she's spent. Peter the Great is coming soon, hopefully I can diplo-annex Ukraine and be done with it. :)

Uh, Guest88, I would encourage you to avoid provocative language here. Urging N Katsyev to simply go to war is fine enough, but I for one find the language inappropriate. I'm not a mod so maybe I'm out of line, but I have enjoyed these boards for a long time now because most everyone treats one another respectfully.

N Katsyev, you could always attempt to station a large army in the Ukraine in an attempt to remind Poland that she is your vassal. Or, as I did in a recent game, forced for the same reasons to take a province and release, just admit that you didn't really want Ukraine in the first place and if Poland takes her back, so be it.

Cheers mate. Ukraine is long since annexed now anyway, Poland had largey been emasuculated in the series of wars I mentioned above and never came after us again. Ukraine also built up a very decent army in the meantime, which I was quite happy to assimilate. Still, I can see this being a problem in the future, that was just an example.
