In my continuing quest to get a supremely bad repuation despite being a nice guy whenever possible (sometimes picking on people who attacked me), I want to vassalize Austria. They have formed a very large empire, larger by at least 50% than it was historically (let's just say that Peter the Great... wasn't). What factors affect vassalization? High relations, obviously, and you need an alliance and RM. But does having troops on their soil help, too? Will having good relations with other alliance members help?

Nothing of what you have mention is useful, sorry :p
But seems useful higher tech level, border and their relation with any other country must be less about +150

You mean vassalize or diplo annex?

If vassalization...best way is to defeat them in war (if feasible :D )

They can't resist force vassalization. Just get 100% warscore and voila.

Diplovassalization won't work if they are as large they sound, unless maybe you control most of the rest of the world.

Diploannexation will also be hard if they are that large, but if you are much larger it can work. Of course, they may also break vassalization, and then won't you be pissed?

check the Diplomacy FAQ for the diplo-vassalisation requirements, i can never remember them all. But as was already said, if Austria is huge ur best chance is probably force-vassalisation and that would require getting a warscore above 70% (more commonly 100%).

I am grotesquely larger than they are, but they just won't diplo! OK, Austria is pretty big, owning about half of Germany and most of the slavic countries. But I've taken most of North and South America, Zimbabwe, southern India. I'm vastly huger. Man, it's annoying.

The AI is extremely reluctant to accept diplo-vassalisation no matter what size difference; a lot of factors are at work which are difficult for you to control, such as the country's relations with others (if they have +200 relations with anyone other than you, that will make them a lot less likely to accept being vassalised). There's also a rule that says countries with vassals of their own (no matter how few or puny those vassals are) will never accept diplo-vassalisation. It's stupid, I know, but it's much harder in EU2 to peacefully vassalise an independent country than it is to peacefully annex a vassal (even quite big vassals will often happily submit to annexation if you wait 30 years, and there's no 'vassals of its own' rule). If Austria is that size, you're gonna have to invade, I'm afraid.

Personally i find it stupid that you can't force-vassalise a country if they are already someone else's vassal. Surely if you have ur armies running through their whole countryside their king will be pressured to pay you tribute and not care about their master. He wouldn't care either, it will just change who he sends his money to.

Maybe, but at least give the old suzerain a relations drop and a couple of years of a casus belli on the vassal and the invading nation for his inconvenience.

Might work too well against the AI however. As it is, its all too often that they'll sit there idle while their one province vassals, unallied, get annexed from under their noses. Then they'd lose the allegiance of their bigger vassals too. Would be nice to be able to keep Austria from peacefully annexing half of Europe though...

Realistically, I can invade but the war would be cutting it close (it's already 1700) - and I can't possible get a casus belli on them, since it looks like they're going to be wussy nice guys for the rest of the game, not bother anyone, and leave everything alone. I think my bad repuation is hurting me. Why it's that high, I don't know. Apparently, peacefully uniting Portugal and France, and Venice under one lenient, tolerant throne and in defensive wars means I'm a horrible, terrible monster, while raping Eastern Europe for plunder is perfectly alright.

Wait your BadBoy is high?
That would be why you can't diplo-vassalise them. I noticed the same thing when i tried to vassalise the Netherlands and my badboy was 30.

Does anyone have the figures on how it affects your chances or how high is too high?

From my experience once the AI country is above a certain size it is very difficult(if not impossible)to diplo-vassalize them, regardless how strong you are. In the current game as Lorrain I diplo-vassalized Naples one the first try(my monthly income is about 600 compared to its 50), but failed to vassalize Poland(whose monthly income is constantly in the 60's) after over 30 attempts over the next 100 years or so, even though by the end my monthly income and military size has almost tripled. My monarch's diplomatic ratings was around the same, and my badboy score has decreased considerably in the meantime. Has anyone encountered similar situations?
