We have updated our Community Code of Conduct. Please read through the new rules for the forum that are an integral part of Paradox Interactive’s User Agreement.
You can have vassals with different religions than your own. Only diplomatically vassalizing them is more difficult and they will have a little more liberty desire.

You can also force vassals to adopt your religion.
But be aware it will increase their liberty desire by 50% in case of heretics and 100% for heathens.

Vassals of different religion actually tend to be the ones that are most useful, since holding that land yourself will create a lot of rebels, and you won't get full benefit of the land, anyway. At least until you have humanist ideas or are able to convert the land yourself.
