Is it normal for some guy, who is rotting away in a dank dungeon, to be able to wield political power?

I had a vassal who usurped a few duchies from me, and then rebelled. After putting down what turned out to be quite a stout rebellion, I put him in my dungeons.

He's been there for a bit now. He's even usurped the duchies back that I justly stripped him of. How can an imprisoned character do this? I click on the counties he was in control of, and it states he is still in control of them, with an overlay of iron bars. Shouldn't someone else be in charge of those counties and duchies, if he is stuck deep in the bowels of MY castle?

Does imprisonment do anything? Other than slowly chip away at their health. (that's debatable, had a count from the HRE that I forgot about last 21 years in my dungeon, poor fella) I'd have no problem with his heir/steward/dude-holding-down-the-fort was doing this, but it irks me something fierce to be notified that a Duchy I held got taken away from me by some guy in my dungeon!

EDIT: Same guy just banished some courtier from his lands, lol. Maybe I need to instruct my guards that no, prisoners are NOT allowed to hold court while imprisoned.

I've had imprissioned vassals usurp dutchies back that I had taken from them, when they did that, I just took them back and they never did it again. They do still have some diplomatic power in the dungeon.

I believe the imprisoned character has a regent doing everything for him?

Edit: Oh, and you should probably take away his counties first instead of duchies.

If he usurps something from you, you get a claim on it so you can take it back immediately at no penalty. After a vassal revolts, start by revoking his duchies. This will unlock plots to revoke his counties. If you can pull them off, you can revoke all his titles eventually.

When I was playing as Castile, I captured I think the youngest son of a Sheikh's younger brother when he was 21. A few months later I tried to ransom him back but his uncle had died and the new Sheikh didn't have any interest in paying a ransom for his cousin. Since nobody would pay for him, I just kept him as a prisoner for years and years. Eventually I started to feel bad after about 10 years or so and let him stay under house arrest and he never tried to escape, but he still had no one who would ransom him. He just stayed imprisoned for years and years, passing through 3 kings. Eventually, after 40 years imprisonment, he was 60-something years old and had spent almost all of his adult life imprisoned, so I freed him to go home. He'd earned it.

Indeed it does. And I recommend it as it makes little sense that they are able to do anything at all. What is also strange: in assassination attempts with the target sitting in your dungeon, your chance to succeed is in fact... around 35%? Seriously? In your own dungeon? And they can run away if it fails? Come on now...

to be fair, Marginal0, you have an execution option that always succeeds, just that you'll get some tyranny. I think to secretly have somebody killed while they are in your custody can be quite difficult, yes.

Excommunicate them, then no one cares. Buying off the pope can be a challenge at times though.

I was also irritated that a guy locked up in a cell can somehow manage to evade assassins. IMO they should make it much more easy to assassinate your own prisoners, maybe with a greater hit to your reputation if you get found out, for attacking a helpless man or something.

Banish him- you automatically size all his lands and money.
Redistribute the wealth to your loyalists and heirs.

Then find out where said traitor ran to and begin the wave of assassinations/plots to assassinate

You can presume that your guards would try to stop an assassin from entering the cell. "But they're my guards!" you're about to cry. "They should be in on the deal!" Yes, you could order the guards to let the assassin in, but then everybody would know that you did it, so it's an execution, not an assassination, complete with juicy tyranny penalties.

Re: imprisoned people continuing to hold territory and take actions, it's their regent acting in their interests. It's no more ridiculous than a 3 year old being able to take these actions.

I think too harsh restrictions for being in prison wouldn't be fun for you, if your charakter gets imprisoned. Imagine 21 years in prison (like the HRE count) and you have nearly nothing to do.

I find it kinda strange how low the penalties for revolting are. Simply losing one county at a time hardly seems like an appropriate punishment. Shouldn't you able to freely execute traitors and/or take perhaps a whole duchy (with all the titles/vassals under it)?

Also, how are imprisoned vassals usurping titles? Do they get a claim after you revoke? Not understanding why they're able to when they should be in the same realm.

I find it kinda strange how low the penalties for revolting are. Simply losing one county at a time hardly seems like an appropriate punishment. Shouldn't you able to freely execute traitors and/or take perhaps a whole duchy (with all the titles/vassals under it)?

You can only penalize them once. Remember that lands are familial, not personal. You're taking away property on the basis of a poor territorial steward, the family deserves the chance to re-earn their land. Hence claims.

You can however execute them and remove a title without a tyrant penalty, just make friends with the pope and excommunicate them. That'll let you kill them or imprison them at no cost.
