Just started a game of the latest beta last week after not having played since 1.04a. Started as the Duke of Flanders in 1066. Some comments and questions:
- Crusade system is wonderful. While I was mucking about in France and England, Italy and Germany took the holy land and fought back and forth there; they still are, and it's 1129.
- Good balance of courtiers
- Lots of great new events
- About 20-30 years in, instead of just the child education events, I started getting the 'personality development' events for almost every child in my court. There is an arubpt point in the family tree where everybody (ruler and kids) is either a martyr, a caregiver, a follower, a survivor, etc. This seems to me a bit overboard, as all the characters are ending up with a great many traits instead of the usual 2-3. I don't know what the possibility is for a personality never to develop, but there are plenty of trait-giving events out there without this set; while I like the idea of it, it shouldn't happen so often.
I just had one significant problem, though. Within a short span, my King (of France/England/Venice/Naples/most of Africa/etc) was severely wounded and fell ill. He then got hit with 'Pope demans revoking of lay investiture' and got excommunicated (talk about a bad week). I quickly re-arranged some titles so that the crown would pass to his second son, the 12-year old Louis. It does so just a few days later when the wounded, bedridden, excommunicated king finishes circling the drain.
Now, one of the things I like about the beta is that it forces you to keep yourself centralized so your personal demesne isn't all over the world. I like the fact that my realm isn't always very stable and I may have a rebellious Duke here and there. So I thought it was neat when, about a day after the new king inherits, I get a 'Your vassal denies you the right to rule' event where some count decided the new king wasn't legit. I clicked 'okay' on the 5% chance it would carry over to another noble.
53 clicks later, every single vassal has declared war. 5%?
Is there some problem with the event, the event text, or my understanding of how it is supposed to work? I fully accept (and approve) of succession problems associated with the loyalty drop you already get, particularly when the new king is young, but the whole house falling down seems a bit dramatic.
