Do only Norse get to become Varangians? Because historically, didn't other Germanic peoples also become Varangians, especially Anglo-Saxons? I don't think I've seen one with the trait.

There were also Slavs, Franks and even Saracins (whoever Greeks might mean by that). Not to mention that due to position becoming hereditary there always were people who were Greek to all extent and purposes.
I think we all know why only the Norse can be Varangians.
Why is that?
Norse were the universal soldiers, and paragons of creation. Only Norse could navigate rivers, only Norse could prepare invasions. Every Scandinavian village elder had bigger fleet than Ummayads and ERE combined and so on.
Paradox may be a tad Norse fanboys/girls.
I know what the word means, thank you very much. I don't know what was the ethnicity of people listed as Saracins in chrysobull #48.
But that doesn't mean HIP can't include Anglo-Saxons or Russians as Varangians.
Do remember that the only addition of the Varagian culture so far is in a sub-mod. Neither of the big HIP-modules add a Varangian culture.
I don't think he proposes creating a special Varang culture, that would be over the top.

It isn't culture-based, by the way, but religion-based. As a result, the cultures which could enter the Guard are: Anglo-Saxon, Russian, all North Germanic cultures, along with Norse and possibly Slavic pagans.
Currently doing a sub-mod to add in the varangians but historically speaking Varangains was a generic term for anyone up north and scholars still argue if they were norse or slavic or both (which I believe).
I meant the Varangian Guard (who were of many different cultures), not the culture Varangian. Sorry if this has caused any confusion.
