What do British, Boers and South African natives have in common?
They all live in the great country of
South Africa!
jhaoI8c.jpg

Hello people of AARland! This is my 1st AAR in this forum, and in this After Action Report, I shall be playing as the country of South Africa. Now as far as I know, there is not a lot of AARs on South Africa (correct me if I'm wrong here.) so I thought I might as well be the 1st to do it. Of course, I will put some ground rules for myself throughout the campaign:

  • No use of cheating
  • Don't go over infamy limit (of course)
  • No gamey tactics or tricks

Now to clear things up, I am not new to Victoria 2. I'm only new to the forums, so the way I may write may seem unusual to some folks, but I'll try to make sure what I say is understood. A few things have been changed to the traditional start for South Africa, and that is Zulu. I had the UK annex them and them release South Africa, so not only do I own Zulu, but it is a state. This is only to make it a bit easier for myself, and I hope this does not ruin the game.

We will use HoD and regular Vicky2. No mods.

These are the primary goals I wish to accomplish in this campaign now:
  • Own all South African cores
  • colonize geographical South Africa
These are the secondary ones that I could do, but not needed:
  • Get the Portuguese colony in South-Eastern Africa.
  • Annex Liberia

So that begins the quest of South Africa!

The 1st update will be posted soon afterwords.

First off, welcome to the forums! Second, welcome to the world of AAR-ing! Looking forward to see what you do with South Africa.

Cheers!

Thanks for the greetings! I've already had my fair game as South Africa before, but this will be the 1st time playing as them with HoD, so I kinda know what I'll be doing.

Chapter 1: The rocky road to Bloemfontein
1836-1846

The situation of South Africa is more or less good, but not perfect: we have 2 civilized OPMs that border us in the North that we can easily take easily in 1 single war. Our population is a mix, with few British and Boer populations.
VmqgnoL.jpg

Those pops...

Well, we better get researching! Lets see what we shall research 1st....
SzMqvJi.jpg

Romanticism it is!

The reason being, we gotta get Prestige! Its clear the army won't give us many points to reach secondary status quick, so we might as well start there. Now, to the economic room!
cOXs5Zr.jpg

Well, it's a start...

We have taken the liberty of building 10 brigades in order to have a size-able army, but it dipped into our economy pretty badly. Cutting back on the construction cost should help us gain more money to build more buildings, especially ports. We shall place our single NF on Cape colony to Encourage Capitalist so we can soon start the long process of industrializing.

We soon gain our 1st precious metal providence!
rLRM9ED.png

Oh goody!

Our 1st newspaper! Let's see what The Times Today have to say!
Q4DxddA.jpg

The Dutch make a move rather quickly. This always seems to happen, huh.

Success! Our 1st factory has begun construction! This is a luxury furniture factory being build in Cape Colony. It seems the NF has worked!
hfyUE10.png

The start of industry in The Cape

On May 24th, 1839, Romanticism researched finished. Our next tech to research will be Medicine.

Elections start on the new year of 1840. The outcome is pretty likely for the Conservative party, the Progressives.

On June 18th 1842, Medicine research finishes. The next tech to research will be Muzzle-loaded Rifles

Elections finish soon afterwords. Looks like the Progressive Party has a landslide victory. Not surprising...

One could assume that I would begin annexing the two Boer nations, but I will not be doing that so fast now, and here's the reason why:
J6EpIFB.jpg

And I thought the assimilation for Chinese cultures were fast...

The Boer nations have already fired the decision to bring in the Boers from South Africa to the native Boer nations. If I annex them now, there will be few Boer pops that I can work with. If I wait a little longer, there will be more pops that are accepted, thus giving me a advantage in the long run. Oranje I might annex now, but Transvaal will wait for later.

Speaking about warring....
F9dwm29.jpg

It's time to bring the Boers to the fold!

We have declared war on Oranje! Besides being cored by us, they have a most valuable RGO providence that supplies iron, and we'll need that for when we start to make more factories.

The South African Army under the command of our general Winston of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha begins occupying Philippolis. Only a few days past and it is already under South African control. From there, the South African army has a little rabbit hunt with the Oranjestad Army before finally engaging them in Umtata. The 3,000 strong Oranjestad army is no match for the 36,000 strong South African Army, and the battle concludes with a victory!
9AtHrGn.png

The army engages the Oranjestad army under the command of Danie de Beer.

GrW9djq.png

Victory is ours! The enemy has been wiped from the field

Around this same time, Research is completed on Muzzle-loaded Rifles. The next tech to research will be Early Railroads.

From there, the war is one-sided with the Oranjestad Capital falling soon afterwords.
Pka5M0C.jpg

Sorry Oranjers, but your little nation is now under South African control.

The war ends with the annexation of Oranje into South Africa!
kc2hANX.jpg

Man, what a beauty!

With that finished, I shall end the update here. Feedback or options on what to do next is welcomed, of course.

Too many Zulus, they will be trouble later unless you release Zululand

Also "Saxe-Cob..." is probably Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the original dynasty name of the current House of Windsor

Thanks for that pointer! I'll go correct that since I never got a chance to copy the name of the general.

*edit: Yeah, you were right. Sometimes I wonder why these names like these are generated for generals of British cultured nations.

Nice work thus far, it is proper that the Boers are brought into a proper South Africa!

Subbed! South Africa is new. :)

Thank you all for your feedback! I'll have the 2nd update tomorrow. I'll try to have them daily for now, but with school starting for me Tuesday, I will try to update every other day, so don't get all up if the AAR seems quite at times.

Once you conquer the Transvaal, you'll basically be playing a quiet industrialization game until colonization begins... unless you don't think starting a colonial empire in Indonesia is gamey. Either way, you'll want to push for as much population growth as you can get - once socialism is unlocked you might be able to rush the healthcare reforms, assuming you got most of the British political liberalism.

If you eventually want to pick up Portuguese Mozambique (or perhaps even Angola), you'll either need to force them out of England's sphere or be ready to fight a potentially very difficult war. Either way, it would be more POPs to play with.

Well, in my last South Africa game (when we still had AHD) I did end up going and annexing Bali, but then the Netherlands decided that I was not worthy of owning it, so that puts me on edge when going to Indonesia. The local powers there tend to not be so friendly if I decided to annex let's say Jahore or any other unciv there. It's worth a try though, and I might consider doing it.

Thanks for the rest of the words of wisdom though. Yeah, most of the real action starts when the scramble for Africa starts and trust me, you don't want to get left out as these European nations will go all out for these lands.

Good stuff so far, a question though: why do want to annex Liberia?

Well...eh..I feel the need to bring them into the fold, even if they are not British folks. They work as a launch pad into colonizing some of West Africa though, so there's a plus there.

Hmm... like I need another AAR to follow. Ah well whatever, subbed!

Thank you all for the feedback! The next update will be posted very soon. It will take me awhile, as this one went for 21 years and had plenty of things happen.

Chapter 2: The Great Buffet
1846-1867

Let's start off with a quick glance of Europe, shall we?
alAVtlg.jpg

Usual Europe, I guess.

Now, to researching!
ZbhSndA.jpg

Idealism shall be our next target!

We will be needing research points for the larger techs we will be researching later, especially the ones needed for colonization.

Now while we wait some more, let's expand somewhere for once that's not in Africa! Jahore is a no-go, since the United Kingdom is already justifying war to establish a protectorate over them. (That means annexing them btw.) Her sister unciv is bound to be attacked by the Dutch, so this leaves us with...
PTSNAAM.jpg

Brunei, here I come! Also 2 factories, yay!

The war starts off when our expeditionary force begins landing in Bintulu.
qHkHty9.png

Colonial ambitions! Also, that was a terrible EURIV reference.

The war is short, and even with our small army, we manage to successfully destory their resistance and annex them into our nation.
d2stVvB.png

Well, it's a colony alright.

The fun does not end there though. We shall leave a small force to guard Brunei in the event that the Dutch decide to attack us. Speaking of which, we should improve relations with them over 100 so they will not be able to justify war (in the meantime.)

So let's declare war on Oman, shall we?
Q3DlKqA.png

Only ended up getting .8 in infamy. I'm not surprised.

That's right, we will be only getting their small land in Somalia for the mere cost of 1 War Score. "But Sigsmund, should you get more?" you'd ask? Well my friend, this has a even bigger plan in mind, for we shall also release Zanzibar!

Wait, what??

Well you see, if we release them, we won't have to deal with Oman anymore with a pesky truce. Our infamy is low enough that we could get Omani Somaliland, release Zanzibar and then decrease relations for a month and finally justify war with Zanzibar to annex them, all in about 1 year!

With the text research finished, we shall proceed next to Raider Group Doctrine.

Our hero from the 1st Boer War Winston begins landing in the Omani capital after having occupied all of the Omani African territories. The Omanis soon peace out with both war goals.
jL05fgg.jpg

Neat, twice the fun!

After about 3 years of being ideal and seeing more factories grow (thanks to us still being able to appoint ruling parties) Socialist finally activate in The United Kingdom!
4NLPkpG.png

Time to make Capecare...

It's too bad barely anyone supports them. We can change that, of course, by putting our single NF to encourage support for the Socialist Party (named the Labour Party) so that our people in the next elections support them more.

Now, I think Transvaal has finally gotten enough accepted pops to make them ripe for conquest.
Ims3H4O.jpg

Transvaal bound!

After occupying a few providence s of Transvaal, we finally catch up with their single 3,000 army led by non other than Koors de Beer!
Xj7oa7I.png

Hope your better than your brother.

We start to research on Market Regulations.

Our general David Haig eventually defeats the Transvaal army.
x1rPMGb.png

Hurrah

He then goes on occupying the rest of the Transvaal. They give up and join South Africa, thus bringing an end to the Boer Republics!
FCaoYit.jpg

Now THAT'S what I call complete!.

A state of slowness soon follows, and we soon get to researching State and Government.

But not without a fight.

Remember Zanzibar? Well up till now, we can finally start annexing them. We ain't at that state yet where a 3 region unciv nation can be annexed under the "Establish Protectorate" Clause, so we'll have to use the conquest one. It gives us 21.4 infamy. Ouch...

We start the war with them. Also to note, the world has gotten uppity with a recent Cocos and Christmas Island crisis war starting between alot of GPs. Let's see how they are going, shall we?

PPEeeG1.jpg

France being the big blue blob, as usual.

Well....they will be a problem later. Now back to Zanzibar, we beat their 1 ship navy with our South African Navy, and thus after all their regions are occupied, that spells the end for the Swahili nation.
qHjZ4IL.jpg

Our springboard to Africa

After this, we will start researching Iron Steamers.

Election start again, no big deal...
MCCwg2G.png

Great Scott, it worked!

I'll end this update from here. Here's the current statistics of South Africa, as always.
