He had met Cuthburg only last year after they both were lost in the forest. Siweard was interested in the early History of the lands and she was on her way to the local market. Both instantly fell for each other and a courtship ensued. The local monastery taught Siweard about the ancient people and their cultures. This was when he developed a passion to found is own place in the History books. He wanted to rule over the land and its people. He wanted to be remembered. But first he needed to start a family. Forward to the year 769 and he was ready. He had a dutiful wife and two sons to help him on his quest.

From small beginnings.

Presumably a Charlemagne start date mod?

All houses have a modest start.

Thanks for the mod list, I should try some.

Chapter I Survival
Chapter 1
Survival (769-777)

Siweard sat in his personal chambers and thought out a plan to increase the size of his holdings. He heard through the grapevine of other rulers in the area increasing their size through warfare. He only had so many men to mold into a formidable army. He had the why but not the means to go about doing that. So he came up with a plan. The first task was to develop the holdings to better suit growth and be able to make a better army.

Siweard was happy with the result thus far,So he found out about some masons in the area and called upon them.

The region was bustling and Siweard was confident that he was going about this in the right way. Then one day an opportunity presented itself.

His oldest son came of age and Siweard was most pleased. And a beautiful bride too.

Things were looking up for his people when another opportunity presented itself.

Siweard even became the leader of the Anglo Saxon Culture.

It was not all about conflict and family. There were secrets and hidden dealings to discover and torture too.

Even his wife was getting into the realm business.

Progressing nicely.

Already a culture head, that's a great progress (even if it may be only temporary).

Chapter II Warfare
Chapter II
Warfare (777-788)

After the last conflict, Siweard was looking forward to some peace and quite in the realm. But it was not to be as a local chief decided to declare war on him. The war was an adventure for the home army as they were able to beat back the attackers. Then a turn of events as Siweard's Chancellor stupidity showed and cost a peace deal.

Siweard decided to go on the offensive as he sought to increase the realm size once more.

It was looking very bright for the realm as Siweard was increasing the size so he might be able to pass something on to his son. But hardship was in the cards as the Earl of Kent decided to raid the capital and killed Eadar's wife

Eadar found a suitable wife

Siweard's second son comes of age during a time of turmoil Hrodberht found a lovely bride.

Peace in the Isles was not be as more and more battles were being fought. The realm would not see peace any time soon as Siweard was attacked again and again. This one was a short affair.
war11.jpg

war12.jpg

Some leaders do not know enough to stop when they are beat the first time. This one was a ever engaging conflict with multiple battles. In the end Siweard's superior intellect payed off. He went for the side with the least amount troops and knocked it home.

And they fell like dominoes.

In the midst of the conflicts, Siweard created the Duchy of Middle Anglia to lay a foundation for his House.

What will the future hold for Siweard's people? Time will tell.

And now a duke, Siweard is clearly building something. He will put his family on the way to be well reknowned, and maybe we are witnessing the debut of a grand dynasty. ;)

Becoming quite the local power - though allowing London to get sacked was a bit unfortunate.

Looks interesting. Will be following. Are you going to try to unite England?
Also, are these all just tribal conquest casi belli that you're using to take the lands around you?

England is on the horizon for another member of the family. Siweard is 57 now. I believe it is a tribal casi belli.

Chapter III The Realm
Chapter III
The Realm (788-797)

Siweard sat back and reflected upon his accomplishments. He was quite pleased, but somewhat disappointed. The various holdings have been suffering from low control through out the constant warfare. He decided to do something about it. First, Lunden needed to reinforced. And then he needed to exert more control over the counties.

Then came the task of doing some family and succession business. Siweard needed to ensure the natural selection of his House once he moves on. He did not want to divide up his holdings with all his sons, so he needed to do something about it. The family was growing with the sons and daughters all getting married and starting their families.

All through this quiet time, allies needed Siweard's help.

The war was something the army could not handle, but an ally in need is a good friend at the moment. And it does suck to get raided again

Siweard still found time to increase the realm. But not at a cost.

And in the midst, a wimpy ruler decided to declare war and drag more rulers into it.

The Isle is being consolidated and Siweard is in the middle, where he likes it. But still there is work still to be done. Like ransom a ruler from the dungeon. Learn about secrets and just being social. All in a days work for a tribal Earl.

Chapter IV The First Crusade
Chapter IV
The First Crusade (797-803)

Siweard was pleased with the peace in the area. He longed for something else to do besides go to war. He needed to get the counties under control as thievery, corruption, and drudgery happening. But the peace was short lived. The ruler from Lancaster must be in desperate need of real estate on the coast. It is all in good to keep the local rabble off the streets. Siweard was thinking in his private chambers, what a self centered person he was. We will go along as long as it suits us.
war50.jpg

But it was not in the cards to see the end of this conflict. It was going to be an up hill battle for the heir Eadgar. Eadgar needed to whip everyone into line and reclaim all that was once before. This included the county of Berkshire. The vassal head died and was it inherited out of the realm.

But an end to the current conflict was near, so Eadgar waited.
war50b.jpg

The Pope decided that it was time to go on a crusade in the Middle East to expel the infidels in Jerusalem. Eadgar eagerly accepted his duty as a good Christian and do his part. He had 16 months to preparer. Would he be ready? Only time will tell.

Before the Crusade starts, Eadgar has some unfinished business to conclude. Will this guy ever learn?

And the County of Berkshire is back within the realm .

And just in time before the Crusade starts.

The night before the army was to depart for the Middle East.....
bedroom.jpg

The news from the front line in the Middle East was not promising. The boat transporting the troops got lost and landed on an Island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The out from the bay came a whole army of fidels and they were angry. After days, weeks, and months of fighting a lone knight survived, and he was coming home. Eadgar was waiting for his arrival as the local port when a mob came storming after him. The mob was being led by none other than his brother, Hrodberht. He was challenging Eadgar for the rightful ruler of the people. Is this the end?
challenge.jpg

challenge2.jpg

Eadgar was very angry at his brother for his betrayal. First he needed to heal his wounds and plot to get back what was once his and their fathers'. First things first....

A fine example of "brotherly love" as it were.

Our dynasty is doing somewhat well...

Let's how much this Crusade fails...
