The problem I have with this Valhalla or victory function is that I immediately think of the totally destructive and failed stay and hold orders by Adolf Hitler. These should be implemented as a penalty for the German player if anything (not really, just to make the point). So my question would be does anybody know maybe non German (or German) examples where in the second world war these stay and hold orders had any favourable and not disfavourable effect? No I don't mean let your troops get encircled and then be happy that they hold out a little longer. Unless I learn of these examples I consider this an undesired feature (the only I know) of AoD.

Try this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manekshaw

Came across him in reviewing the Indian tech teams; memorable quote:

"Gentlemen, I have arrived and there will be no withdrawal without written orders and these orders shall never be issued" - During 1962 War, when he was sent to North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) to command retreating Indian forces against the Chinese force.

Note, this particular war will need to be modelled in AoD as it is within the timeframe of the game.

As far as we do know, how does exactly VoV function now? I just can't find where I've read about it the first time but I don't remember the devs giving so many details about it, so maybe it's already a bit more complex than a simple "fight to the death" without any specific penalties. Of course I can be wrong, though :)

VoV is a rater simple game effect.

Basically you just trade STR for ORG.
They will not fight entirely to the death, but will reteat after taking some heavy losses. (amount depends on unit situation and VoV command)

VoV has 2 basic levels:
1) If the Unit cannot retreat, for example pocketet or on an island, then this automatically enables a basic form of VoV (unit hold on as long as they can to wait for rescue). Here a reasonable amount of STR damage tolerated. This has no "bad" after effects - it just shows that cornered troops will not give up without a decent fight.
2) Unit is forced to enable VoV by the player.
This is the "actual" VoV function, where the units stand their ground without retreating (even though they can) until rather heavy losses are endured.... Now there will not be much difference between the basic level, however using this command cost Dissent... each MP lost due to this function will raise dissent a smalll bit (misc.txt).

So basically Forcing VoV will always make units fight longer, but raises dissent and therefore lowers the morale / fighting capabilities of the entire country if abused.

I think outside of surrounded units (where it should be automatic), I'll seldom use this anyways and I hope my opponents do. I think if you have several spaces of ground to give I'd rather take minor losses, regain org while retreating then repeat then take ridiculous casualities.

Keep in mind combat effectiveness is approximately strength * org, which means that 0 org units have a near zero combat effectiveness, I'm happy to gain XP for pounding on them with no casualties :).
