In one of the pictures I saw a couple of new alerts, I can't wait to see what they are for. :)

My guesses are:
2. We Should Invoke an Omen
6. We are able to declare a new law/decision

Every dev diary it gets better!
Only one question: wich restriction there will be for passing laws as monarchies? I mean, from the screenshot some laws seem to be avaible, some others are greyed out.
And a concern: with all these new features, especially regarding characters and their interaction, will the game be balanced? My biggest concern is that we will end up having one of two kind of outcome:
a) a game with no civil wars, where everything runs smouth kind of like the old EU:R, and where the new features will look more like candies than real changes;
b) a game where everything goes insane, with a civil was every two years, because the effects of the new features will go beyond player control in few years.

Only a thought! Really excited though!

The laws will need certain requirements, and these laws are greyed out because of course the screenshot is taken at some time in the game and maybe the country they are playing is missing a tech level or other requirements to be able to make the law active.
A law that issn't available to the Monarchie wouldn't be just greyed out, but missing completely!

ad b)
And to your other concern: They will test it enough that it won't be heavily unbalanced either in one direction or the other (no civil war and civil wars all over) and if there are some problems then they will patch it afterwards. Don't be too sceptical about that. It will have a decent level of balance and if not players will react furiously which paradox cannot and will not ignore.

Also at this board are enough modders active so they will balance things paradox may not has.

ad a)
The game was really made for these features(I mean Characters, their positions and their influence on a country) which means that the game will most likely be way more complete than the vanilla Rome was!
This issn't just a candy, this will take the game to the level paradox originally wanted it and beyond. That means they will also add new features because otherwise it would be a fraud and not an addon. ;)

Also most addons are just candies to the fans because most of the time people won't be a game because of a new addon. Only people who already considered buying the game but didn't because they were missing something would buy the original game because of it.

And to the DD:

I nearly thought you would let the Monarchies out^^.
It really does sound exciting and I am looking forward to this addon.
Really good ideas! Can't wait!
The ability to change from Republic to Monarchy really is awesome too! But this was mentioned in another diary.

Looks awesome; someone has to make a medieval mod for VV - it's the closest we have to EU3/CK and it would be awesome, IMO. :)

Yes, of course I know paradox will do a great job and that the community will make the game close to perfection... mine was only random concern coming from the big amount of new feature that VV seems to implement. Nothing too serious or founded! :) But, can I give another speculating example of what I meant for "unbalanced"?
In the monarchy dinasty screen we see that each guy have his own favorite for succession. That's a super cool feature, but what if each guy will have a DIFFERENT favorite? There will be like 6 different civil wars? Or things will stay cool and only when, say, more than the 50% of the council support the SAME canditate for succesion there will be a civil war?
I repeat, I'm only making high speculation about the game... nothing serious, it's just show how excited I am! :)

The laws seem to decide who is the PRIMARY succesor (oldest son usually, I guess). The favourite succesor will probably appear only when the person is disloyal, ambitious or it will show who will support whom if a civil war starts.

It would be neat of the scale of the civil war was connected to the number of disloyal characters. So if 3/6 were, the war would be significantly larger than if only 1 rebelled. It would make no sense to have three different "civil wars" at one time. Rebel Faction One = LAME. I see lots of potential for these new editions, its just to bad nothing will be balanced until the second patch.

Were the primary successors for monarchies at this time generally the oldest son of the monarch? Was primogeniture generally how the successor was chosen, or did it just sometimes happen to be the oldest son? Anyone know?

Normally in a Monarchy the successor would be the oldest son. But there were also exceptions (i.e. Maria Theresia of Austria) Just saying that Monarchies always had this way of succession.

I would also like to see happening that the 2 factions strengh is depending on how many Supporters they have.

Given the general instability of monarchies in the time-period it seems that rather than the eldest son, the SURVIVING son would be the successor :p

The effort put into making the gameplay more varied is laudable, but I am nonetheless worried about this council-thing.

Hellenistic monarchies were absolute monarchies, even more so than that of Louis XIV. Hellenestic political thought, as extant in surviving works of philosophers and statemen of the age, does explicitly recognize the Hellenistic king as being above and beyond law - it recognizes that there is nothig he is not allowed to do.

Which is of course not to say that councilmen did never plot against kings - they did do so no less than councilmen did at all times. It's just that the councils had no legal power vis a vis the king whatsoever and were certainly no check on the monarchs' power. I'm worried that the councils in Vae Victis might grossly misrepresent Hellenistic monarchies, to the point of distorting them well beyond recognition.

I don't see anything implying that the council in a monarchy will in any way check the king's ability to do anything -- that's Republics' job. What they do control, however, seems to be succession and how different resorts in the government are led, which is quite realistic. Even councilmen had loyalists and influence beyond the court, which they would have used to their advantage.
