Well, amazingly this seems to have resolved it.

I suspect something went corrupt in the Startup options in steam (which I have never used, and was always empty, but that's the only thing I can imagine EU4 calling for Steam on.)

That was just an update from yesterday.......


Now, I'm getting the error again.
Yesterday, I did get an error upon selecting a peace condition in my iron man game (taking over vassal Saxe-Lauenburg from Austria as Scandinavia), but after that I could run the game.

In the meanwhile, I have not installed anything.

The only thing I am aware of having been changed is I changed the bios setting wake on event from on to off. This can't be the problem.

I'm getting desperate here.

There is a known bug that causes a crash on vassalisation sometimes.

And now, it seems to have corrupted something with xfire? After having killed every single non-critical function on my computer, the last of which was xfire, it did start up again....

Thanks for raising my awareness to that known issue, it does seem similar.
I'm guessing that one won't be fixed in 1.4?

Sorry, I don't know what xfire is, but if it's interfering with the game in some way I guess you need to report it to them.

Must have been a misconclusion... in the meanwhile, with 1.3.2, it did work stably again. Not sure how or why.... the full reinstall of both steam and eu4 seems to have helped.
(This with xfire, a steam-like program, running.)
