Mare Nostrum and Patch 1.16 are not far away and I have been reading concerns from users who are worried about their current saves, people who are in the middle of long campaigns and wish to know if they can continue them after April 5th, when Patch 1.16 deploys.
v1.15 save games will not be fully compatible with v1.16
We always attempt to maintain compatibility between versions, but in this case, large map changes along with changes to spread of discovery mechanics means that we cannot maintain compatibility between these versions. Attempting to load v1.15 saves in v1.16 will result in empty provinces, Terra Incogneta over the whole world and other possible glitches. The time and resources required to maintain compatibility for older savegames in this case was unfeasible. We hope you understand.
Still, there is a solution for those who want to continue with your 1.15 saves, and it's a solution that has been in place for a long time but I wish to echo it here. Even if your version is updated to v1.16 you can roll it back to a previous version through Steam. Right click on Europa Universalis IV on Steam and select properties.
From here, select the Beta tab and click on the dropdown menu
When v1.16 is deployed, a v1.15.1 branch will be available. If you select this, your game will revert to that version and be as playable as it was before, Ironman and all. New achievements from v1.16 will not be achievable but previous ones will be.
If you are so inclined, you can use this to go as far back as v1.4 and compare how the game is now to how it was back then.
