When I check the box in the ship designed to auto-design everything, the defense platforms it designs just have level 1 missiles in every weapon slot, a single level 1 power generator with the rest of the support slots empty, and the level 1 sensor. I've unlocked better missiles and lots of other weapons, plus better power generators, shields and armor, but none of these are being used.

Kind of relevant, in early game you'll maybe want more small-med weapons to deal with enemy corvettes.
