Not positive this is a bug, but my vassal's opinion of me gets worse as my relative strength to them gets weaker. Isn't that backwards of EU4 and how it should work generally? My vassal's opinion of me should improve as I get stronger relative to them right? It made it really hard to integrate a vassal yesterday without destroying most of my fleet. Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same. My vassals have one planet, and I've got 5. My fleet consists of 22 cruisers, but they still have a -52 'Relative Power of Subjects' penalty. Earlier, it seemed to go up as my fleet strength increased.

I have a 30k fleet stack, 13 planets and a massive economy. I enlightened them and they have a single planet, pretty much no significant resource production or fleet, and are in the middle of my territory.

I have a significantly large "relative power" relationship malus.

Even with a single vassal who is much weaker than me, the malus applies. I guess that means it isn't a product of multiple vassals grouping strength.

Though, it could potentially have meant to be a malus because you are doing little to strengthen them while focusing on your own planets?

I am having this problem as well. I have four vassals all with a relative strength of pathetic and they all have very low opinions of me. I would have thought my overwhelming fleet superiority would make them like me more as I can defend them better.

Seems like I am not alone in this one. My guess is the value is just reversed in the code (negative should be positive etc.). This may seem a like a small issue, but it rather game-breaking if you are trying to do any form of conquest that doesn't generate a ton of threat and AI all banding against you.

I do not think that it is fixed as I am having the same issue.

Edit. To Clarify I have two vassals, one is pathetic compared to me and the other is equivelant but with an inferior fleet size and they both have exactly the same modifier based upon relative power of the empire so I'm not sure what is going on there. that doesn't seem like it should be that way.

Same thing happening to me: My fleet has 1K, theirs 0.5K, I'm technologically superior, I've 50 pops, they have 12. I've 5 worlds, they have 1.

They're still loyal because I enlightened them, but I get a whopping -44 penalty in relations. Should I make my vassal more powerful than me so they're more loyal to me? What's the rationale here?

+1 - It seems in v1.02 checksum Fc5e as well.

I don't think it's actually a bug, I think the case is that a vassal usually aim to have their freedom restored, especially if they were taken as vassals as the result of a war.
But that said, I believe that it is a bad mechanic and doesn't make proper sense. I think this should be changed regardless of it being a bug or not.

If you don't mind modding this is pretty easy to fix (I'm assuming it is a bug).

In 00_opinion_modifiers.txt find:

# Subject's relative power to overlord
opinion_relative_power = {
opinion = {
base = -1 # per 1% power
}
min = -1000
unique = yes
}
And change the -1 to 1.

I'm trying not to use mods, but this bug (again assuming) is very annoying.

Yeah I thought about changing it myself. I guess I could though that buggers up any Ironman right? I don't know how to really make it a mod formally though I could just make the change in the code myself.

Yeah I thought about changing it myself. I guess I could though that buggers up any Ironman right? I don't know how to really make it a mod formally though I could just make the change in the code myself.

I prefer to play on ironman as well; however, I'll switch over after the first major patch which will hopefully address many of the more serious issues. For example, the problem with AI invasions and pops ethic divergence issues.

Also, I made some additional changes to this than just removing the minus sign. I also put a max of 25 on it and made it for every 5% power instead of 1%. I felt that vassals would love their overlords too much with just 1 per 1% power. As a point of contrast, being in an alliance/federation with somebody is 50 whereas it was not unusual for this value to be >100. I feel that a vassal should never love you just because you're more powerful.

I think it may not be a bug, and when you get stronger they get a bigger modifier so that they can attract allies by threat to later fight for independence (no such mechanics in the game but that's at least my train of thought).
Despite them hating your guts, they will still chase you around and aid you in wars and such so I'm not sure if it actually has any negative effect on you

Reading the comment in the file, I think it is supposed to be only a negative if they are more powerful than you, as there is already a +25 subject bonus.

However, there was no way for me to make this work. I tried changed the 1% power to -1% but it did nothing.

For the moment, I felt like the modification I made was better than a massive negative for being more powerful.

In any case, eventually I'm sure Paradox will fix it, if it is a bug. Or make it make sense in game, if it is supposed to encourage them to seek out allies for independence.
