Usurping the throne as regent ?

Hello there !

I wonder if I can usurp the Byzantine Empire (I'm actually King of Anatolia) as regent. I have a claim made by a plot. Is that possible ?

Funny fact: I play Alexios Komnenos, who have been emperor in the true story.

I don't think that you receive any in-game advantages as a regent. Maybe it gives you a boost to plots against the person you are filling in for, I'm not sure though. But you won't be able to just shove the Basileus from the throne, I'm afraid, you will most likely still have to fight your way to the top.

I agree, playing as regent needs to be like playing as ruler

At the very least you should be granted a certain amount of power, maybe with the possibility of other court members or fellow vassals of the ruler you replace trying to replace you or accusing you of taking advantage of the situation (which I certainly would try to do ...).

At the same time, if you yourself are incapacitated, you should lose a significant amount of influence over your own realm.

There are some events that trigger if you are a regent. Once I was the regent of an underage queen: I was able to declare her crazy and lock her away in a tower. She became permanently Incapable and I became pretty much regent for life. Too bad that I wasn't actually ruling in her stead. Still a cool event though.

Playing as a child ruler I once saw my vassal jostle for the post of regent with the Queen Mother. The popup aptly says that because of my age the series of events is not something I can comprehend. I still do not (both in terms of how it happened and why it happened - for a meagre amount of prestige the title carries?)...

I got my son to be Byzantine emperor that way. He was far weaker than my Despot of Sicily father, so it was troublesome. I placed my retinue in Constantinople in case he refused.

I had those events trigger for me as well when I was playing William. But that little bastard king wouldn't cooperate so it ended up driving me insane trying to kill him.

Would the AI follow the same rules then? So, if you have an underage king your regent would control your council, your armies, and your diplomacy? Would you just sit and watch it while the (up to) 16 years pass by?

I had a middle aged king once take a blow to the head in battle, become incapable & remain a drooling imbecile for the remaining 10 years of his life. It was a rather tense time as his son & other Councillors took turns as regent. He lost 6 provinces in his demese to the son and 4 to the other regents. The only options given for the events giving away land are "drool" & "continue to stare blankly". Fun times.

I've been wanting more gameplay features for regents for awhile now, especially after factions were releases. Sense a monarch in regency can not declare war or change laws, the regent, to some extent, should have that power. Declaring your liege permanently incapable should be a plot, not a random event, and coup d'etats should be easier for regents. On that note, I think councilors in general should have more power than they currently have.

I forget, but can you declare war as a minor? You shouldn't be able to, and it'd be interesting (and pretty accurate) if your most important diplomatic powers -- those involving the realm as a whole -- were given to your regent for the duration of your reign.

Spam bot again. Anyways, I had an interesting event in Lux Invicta where my king was left incapable, and his daughter in law plotted to murder him. The maids tried drowning him in the bath once and failed, but they succeeded the second time on orders from his own son and heir! I was mad at playing as the guy who killed my beloved old king, and who was also now known as "the Patricide" or something. I guess he and his scheming wife succeeded at offing his own father. He went on to be a great king anyways though but it was interesting.

Having a regent be in charge of certain realm functions would make the whole experience much more meaningful. At the same time, tyranny should accrue to the regent rather than the monarch-in-minority.

I have spent a lot of time playing as a regent and found myself in extremely weird situations. One example being that three of my sons were dukes in the same realm, all of whom had high relationship values with me. The AI started revoking titles from my own kids on behalf of my two year old grandson-king. By the time the kid was in double digits, he had an enormous tyranny value, and my sons and two thirds of the kingdom were rebelling. So I, as regent, revoked titles from my sons and other nobles, who hated the king-in-minority for it, rose in rebellion against him, and then pulled me into the war that presumably was a reaction to my own actions and policies as lord protector. I then ended up in a similar situation when I ended up being regent for the next king's son six years later. Very dumb situation. At the very least the king's tyranny should be bound to a regent, vassals should sooner rebel to change the regent than dethrone the king, and tyranny should be reset with a new regent. Other ways to take advantage of regency, like revoking titles to your dynasty's benefit or bringing the kingdom into wars that benefit you, would be a lot of fun as well, though I suppose it is tricky to take power away from a player under a regency.

Agree. Come to think Duke(s) of Albany and James I of Scotland when Albany had policies which were outright contrary to James's interests like fighting the English in France, when James was held "guest" (prisoner) at the English court. The regent should be able to declare wars and peaces, deal with vassals etc. It should be serious threat to the ruler and make players avoid the thing like plague.

I think only once in my games my regents have really played against me (if not counting the numerous times when they had added their massive plot powers to assassinate me, underage child). I was playing as a junior/cadet branch of the Seljuks, ie Muslims, when my old Beylerbey got the Alzheimer (infirm, incapable) and my first wife (quite cunning and ambitious, IIRC) was appointed the regent. She took a couple of beyliks from me and I couldn't do nothing. It was quite funny actually. She ruled them in her own name, a Muslim lady. Later when the son inherited, those counties were quite easy to get back and get the bitch imprisoned (not the mother of the new ruler).

Yeah, all regents seem to do at the moment is occasionally steal gold from you. I've never seen them present any sort of threat, when really they ought to be running the realm in your name and on rare occasions (dependent on traits) trying to kill you.

Ambitious regents should try to overthrow you, at the expense of being hated by the majority of vassals and incurring an immediate -100 relation hit with anyone who has a claim on the throne. This could also be achieved via a faction or plot, I suppose.
