Please explain to me, why recently everyone seems to be able to basically usurp everything.

Before 1.07 (and as the player this still applies) you needed at least half of the counties in a kingdom / a duchy / ... to usurp it. It seems that those "rules" do not always apply anymore.

I know that factions/plots might play a role here but I can't really get my head around this.

The following happened to me recently:

I am Tsar of Russia, my brother holds Hungary. Of course he has a claim on all my stuff.

Now I consolidate Sweden and give a county, a duchy and the kingdom to my son. IMMEDIATELY afterwards (like 1-2 ingame days) my King of Hungary brother usurps Sweden. Note that he doesn't hold any land in Sweden whatsoever.

One week later the old ruler of Sweden who was stuck with a single county at this time usurps his (4 county) duchy and steals three counties.

Stuff like this happened to me numerous times as of now. Seemingly you don't need any land and just a claim to usurp something.

And if it's a faction: The Swedish ruler who usurped a duchy was pretty much the only Catholic Swede left up there in Scandinavia. I can't see who would back him in a plot like that o_O

Any ideas?

Try to load the game as your son & see what happens?

I think this is faction. Vassals are simply too happy to join any faction even at 100 relations, it needs to be fixed

I agree. Since your brother has a claim, someone can start a faction in Sweden to install him, but because it's in your son's realm, you don't get notified about this. It's possible that the faction gained a lot of support and your son just gave into the demand because he couldn't win.

Duke of Orkney usurped Duchy of Moray in my campaign. Had to go through the trauma of provoking and revoking. An annoying bug, definitely..

Moral of the story:

Stop ignoring the claims of people that you give land to.

Well I usually do pay attention to that. Long story: I am now in my 34th year of my war with the Ilkhanate. Wouldn't be much of a problem (gives a good bonus with vassals ^^) but changing my succession law isn't possible. That's why I am stuck in Gavelkind. I ended up with that when i upgraded to an empire. That way I lost a kingdom and some good provinces to my pesky brother. If I could I would switch to my beloved elective asap ;)
Weird war: The Ilkhanate went in, took 5 counties which gave them 90% warscore. I managed to destroy one of their 20k stacks which brought the warscore down to 86%. The problem is I can't beat their 180k doomstack. Accepting defeat isn't an option either as the khan simply refuses to make peace. He just sits their and waits. There might be some mechanism that prevents the hordes to take more than 5 counties or something like that ^^

Back to topic:
I still think there's something fishy about those usurpations.
Another example: I hold Stettin for decades and usurped the duchy of Pomerania once or twice. During some major HRE rebellion I press the de jure claim on the second county. Note that the second county was held by some German Catholic e.g. different culture, different religion. Some days later the whole duchy is gone, usurped by someone who didn't hold any land before.
There's clearly something wrong when a faction in another realm (although de jure) can change the possession of a duchy from one realm to the other. There should at least be some bloodshed in the process ;)
