Basically I've just annexed China.

I've gone uber heavy on industralization and conversion tech, and with China's resources now maintain a comfortably 423 IC economy. ; ).
However, I'm playing CORE 0.84 with 1.06c. After a few events involving border clashes, it looks like the Soviet Union is about to declare war. They've gathered 122 divisions on the border...which can't be usual in 1939 LOL. I have to stop them all of 16 manchukoa...ian divisions on the border.

5 CAV, 5 INF, 6 MIL.
Too back this up i have moved 8 arty inf.divs and 4 eng. mot divisions + 1 armoured unit into positions.
I'm screwed aren't I??? Lets be honest here.
My entire armed force comprise 60 divisions...eeeekkk.
Be fun to lose a game actually. :)

fall back to the mountains and hole up. also, the infra. is really low around there so you can prolly strat. redoploy before an advancing army arrived anyway. besides, you only have to hold out until 1941.

good luck.

it's not that difficult to take out the Soviets - just stall them in Mongolia and use mech. div's to take out Wladivostok area. The Soviets will start running towards Korea - but just encircle and kill them all!

in my game I even managed to take the east coast of Soviet Union - but the Germans were no match and I stopped the game, the Soviets are now in France and low countries ?

To the original poster:

I've played Japan in CORE, and believe that a Soviet declaration of war is unlikely. The Soviet AI doesn't list Japan in its declare war on list. There are no events that allow the SU to use the 1939-40 border incidents as a chance to declare war, although Japan can declare war on the Soviet Union.

However, it is possible for the Soviet Union and Japan to find themselves fighting if Japan joins the Axis. Even this, however, takes a while.

All that said, if you do face a war, you're in trouble. Just remember two things:
1. The survival of the army and the preservation of most of your manpower is more important than mainland Asia.
2. The Russians are weakest when over-extended. Just try not to lose the mountains because they're a nuisance to take back.

I tried war against the Soviets once. I will never try it again.

It was a VH/F on Basic CORE difficulty settings, and I hated it. I took China in about a year and a half, and started the game with the intent of ignoring the US and UK (not that they'd give me much of a challenge, at least until I landed on the West Coast), so I was well-prepared for the war. The Soviets didn't take a single province in Manchuria or Mongolia from me, I didn't lose a single division, and the Soviets basically lost every batt.e

So why did I hate it?

I hated it because nearly every Soviet province I need to invade to secure Siberia was mountainous. Furthermore, many of these mountainous provinces were defended by rivers. What's worse, it usually took me two months to move my armies into a province, by which time every single province was amply garrisoned.

To make a long story slightly shorter, it took me two years to take Vladivostok, Irkutsk, and everything in between. At the same time, I was powerless to stop the Soviet offensive in Sinkiang. I couldn't garrison most of the provinces due to the infrastructure (the Soviets had no such problem, due to the land connection to its capital). I had to fall back to L...that big plains province NW of Chungking, and the territory the Chinese Communists started with. I didn't have enough land divisions to put up a strong force in China and Mongolia while maintaining my offensive in the north. The only thing that carried me as far as Irkutsk (actually, that mountain province to the west of Irkutsk with the river guarding it) was my superior air force. Even then, I had to keep my bombers constantly flying into Sinkiang to halt the nonstop Soviet offensives. They just wouldn't leave me alone.

Finally, when summer 1943 came around and the Germans still hadn't lauched Barbarossa, I just saved, quit, and never gave the game another look.

On the flip side, I love attacking Japan as the Soviets. I can't reach the Home Islands, so it always ends like my China games. Only it's a lot easier to push them back.
