Using your tributary status to stop coalitions?

I started a game as Bengal the first time for me to play in India.
I wonder if it's possible to become a tributary to Ming and then gets a few strategic wars going in India. Fight one or two countries, kill their arimes, siege them down and then declare again. Then grab a ton of land and don't care about the AE since Ming protects you.

Has anyone tried that strategy?

I don't think your overlord has to protect you against coalitions.

He won't protect you if the coalition is declared by one of his tributaries.

Are there still situations where you wage war and your tributary 'overlord' takes the blame in terms of AE? Or has that all been fixed now?
