So, i'm curious, are we able to use foreign characters in the game, in EU4 it seemed extremely difficult, and i'm wondering if it'll be the same in Stellaris, i'd just like the ability to copy and paste my names into the game without having to use alt key codes etc (typically they didn't work in EU4, but i haven't tried recently that might have been updated)

The game is built on the same engine as EU4/CK2, and it's unlikely they rewrote all the string handling/expanded the fonts just for this. It's a shame though: Unicode support in Stellaris would absolutely rock. :)

But they obviously have support for it - as it seems to be moddable, and the game by default has ÅÄÖ in it, as well as ü and é and such, it's just that us players can't rename provinces from in game.
It seems to me like it should be fixable..

There are two reasons it might not work at the moment: either (1) the engine is written from the ground up in something other than Unicode (e.g. Windows-1252, which supports a few Western European characters like ü and é, but not ř, and certainly not 私), or (2) the engine is fine and the fonts they use are limited.

My bet is on the former. Once you have a finished product, changing something like that is very difficult, much more so than modding. Character encoding goes to the heart of how the game engine stores and manipulates things in computer memory, and it can be a bit of an uphill battle to get Windows to work with you when it comes to Unicode (not so much on Linux and Mac).

I doubt they'd go to the trouble unless they were planning on releasing a version that truly needed Unicode, like a Chinese version of the game. And even then - it can be easier just to fork the game and use a local encoding like GBK or Big5 rather than go full out Unicode.

But the problem isn't that the characters exist or doesn't exist, the problem is that even though they DO exist - we as the players, can't rename stuff with said letters. But ü, é, åäö certanly DOES exist - it's just that we can't use them
