I have a friend who wants to learn how to play EU4 and we can't meet irl to play SP. Moreover, he has told me that he probably won't ever play SP and will just play MP.
I have all the expansions and he has none of them, so it would be best if I were to host. That way he could learn to play with all expansions for our future real MP games.

With that in mind, I figured the best way to teach him would be to play MP with me hosting. I found that the host cannot be an observer so I decided we would co-op as the Ottomans. I wouldn't do anything but would be able to see everything and could therefore just guide him over voice chat.

The problem, as I discovered, was that I was getting all the events and he was getting none of them. Obviously, if we cut events out of this, he'll be missing a big part of the game and it won't be a complete tutorial. As it happened, he had to leave very early and we didn't get far into the game (we had just occupied Constantinople), so we could start over.

The problem is that if he hosts, we don't have the expansions. If I host, he doesn't get events. If we play different notions we have both, but I can't guide him and I'll have my own concerns to distract me. So, does anyone have a solution to this? Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Hmm.. I haven't played multiplayer but I have one idea. What happens if you host and pick a tiny country and let yourself be eaten? Can you observe then? Does multiplayer end when there is only one player left or can they continue playing until the end date?

Could you swap Steam passwords so that he can connect to your profile (with all the DLCs) and host from there, while you play on his? As I understand it, you cannot physically play from one anothers' computer, but this might be an approximation.

TBH, I'm not sure how steam works from different devices like that. This might not actually be technically possible if some DLC files are stores locally on your computer. Another option might be for you to mirror his screen to yours, though that may be somewhat impractical, as you couldn't then check anything not currently on his screen like the ledger or different tabs.

if they are from different areas altogether steam may end up banning them for swapping accounts, only do that when you are physically at the other side so you can get out of the ban successfully

to do it and skip bans, since the friend already has euiv, both would need to create a dummy account on a separate device, add each others dummy account as family view (needs to login on the other computer) with one week or longer in between adding one to the other also doing it AND not login in to steam on the true device for that period (to account for a "holiday trip" where you were physically over the other's area), and, once done, using the dummy to launch the other's copy of the game and playing the MP session, then the friend can host as it should load all the dlcs (an account that has the base game doesnt load dlcs of a family member iirc, thats why you need dummies)

this might be harder if the account has mobile protection, as the mobile could/would show the user never traveled anywhere (although you can argue you left the mobile at home)

otoh i suggest against login in with your steam password on another's device as viruses and keyloggers and whatnot

Theres steam one-click streaming/broadcasting, you can let your friend join your game's stream and he could tell you what to do and you explain live why its good or not, he might get bored if he doesnt like spectating though

What I would do is to put your friend in some easy country, e.g. Ottomans, and then you in a nearby somewhat powerful country, e.g. Mamluks, and you play on speed 1 walking him through what everything does, and ally eachother right away so you can help out in wars. I've done it this way twice, great success. Spend some time going through the important UI bits before unpausing, and then just let him pause whenever something comes up and he needs any help.

I would say thats the best way. If you talk about every event he gets, you can get him into every modifier fairly easy.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
I think i'll test out what happens if the host gets annexed (I could play Byzantium and let him annexe me). If I become an observer that would be perfect.
If that doesn't work we might try mirroring his screen to mine. I could play as some isolated custom nation in Australia that'll be safe for a long time.

If that fails...
What I would do is to put your friend in some easy country, e.g. Ottomans, and then you in a nearby somewhat powerful country, e.g. Mamluks, and you play on speed 1 walking him through what everything does, and ally eachother right away so you can help out in wars. If you've found this works well, I might try it then. I might pick someone other than Mamluks though. That way I he could conquer Mamluks. I think Crimea would be a good option. When Haji Giray dies, I'll let myself become a March.

one thing I found out when co-opping nations, is that whoever picks the nation last, gets the event. Not sure if that's an accurate rule or just a random occurence. But whenever I played 2player campaign(wich I've done a few times), my friend would pick after me, to get the event, so i'd focus on the military, whitout getting random popups.

So I just have to pick first? If you're correct, you may have perfectly solved my problem. Thanks very much.

We just tested this. Don't have time tonight to actually play but we were able try it. It worked so it looks like all is well.

Thanks everyone.
