I have a question, does infra or trade (infra especially, as I could see how trade could be tied to further trade efficiency) have any purpose after you discover the last tech that they give you? And if not, what use are goods manufacturies?

Techs go on until level 10, yes.
Manufactories will give you a bonus to both income and research. Hover the mouse-cursor over a manufactory and you'll get a tooltip saying what they do precisely... :)

Hrm. Going to research more infra then, as I think that 10% more income per level could come in veeeeeeeeeeeery useful as the Ottoman Empire (The first game I'm coming near beating the game with!)

You should always try to achieve level 5 infra as soon as you can so you can promote governors and lower your inflation.

Oh I know of that. That was the first thing I researched. I've got 0 or near enough to it inflation, as well as governors, tax collectors and chief judges in near every province.

In general, once you have reached Infra 6 (for goods manus) and Trade 5 (whereupon you will likely have the Trade tech lead in any SP game), you can pretty much intersperse increasing those techs with increasing your LT and/or NT techs as needed. Use the manus you build to keep your progress in Infra and Trade going even when not putting monthly income into them. Oftentimes, the ahead-of-time penalty is so large for Infra and Trade techs that it makes more sense to time them so that you aren't so far ahead.

If you don't mind me asking, when does the ahead of time penalty actually kick in?

From db\infra.csv

from db\trade.csv

I assume the "cost" field is the date to reach the next tech level when you are at a particular tech level. Otherwise trade tech 10 and infra 10 would be very expensive.

Battle system FAQ - 1.08 gives ahead of time dates for land and naval techs.

Not quite, Tom.

The actual figures can be found in the excellent [thread=157925]Economy FAQ[/thread].

To find the Ahead of Time penalty end date from the .csv file, you have to look at the "cost" date for the level 2 below the level you wish to research. Subtract 5 from that date. Thus, if you are researching Infrastructure 6, and you do so before 1530, you incur a penalty.

For reasons left to the reader, levels 0-2 of any of the four technologies do not have Ahead of Time penalties, unless you have a start date before 1414.

The numbers I just gave are as of v. 1.08. The latest beta has some different numbers, I believe (yes, I just looked, it is easier in the betas to achieve levels above level 5 infra).

its not 10% MORE income per lvl. its 10 percentage points higher production efficiency...depending on the ratio of production/taxes to trade-related income income & your current production efficiency gaining a lvl of INFRA might increase your income either significantly more (or less!) than 10%.

Is it possible to go beyond 100% in trade or production efficiency? If not, then the highest one or two levels are not worth reserching, because with DP slider settings and manus 100% can be achieved anyway.

As most of my income is not due to trading, but rather from production, it will likely increase it by quite a bit.

I take it you are not playing the Netherlands, Venice or Portugal then  ....there you might very well see something approaching 60-90% of your income being from trade.

Yes it is. Just check out the Dutch in the late 1700s scenarios and they should already be there. For a player run country you should have both trade and production efficiencies past 100% in the late game stages (and possibly much earlier, depending on your strategy).

In my current game as Spain I was shocked at seing my productionefficency in 1505 (or something like that) at 9% ...luckily it doesnt seem to be a big problem thought ?! oh well....and I need my aristocracy to help soothe the ones who say Im being a "badboy"...
