Im playing Japan 36'

And I have inherited two cvl's, one generation 1 and one generation 2.

So after the patch removed the cruizerg fleet, what should I do with my two cvl's?

Anti-Submarine Warfare and fleet spotters for non Carrier fleets?

They still have high sea detection, so yeah, that's a very good use for them.
Besides, they still help normally composed gunship-fleets to manage to close to carriers. And you have six BB's, four BC's and a lot of cruisers...

They do not help close on fleets. They're only good for detection in ASW duty imo.
I agree with WM here. CVL's are no longer worthy of a research slot, and definitely not worth building. Use radar brigades instead. In CTF's I just build more CV's now.

They still do due to their good detection/visibility ratio. And as the question was what to do with the three Japanese starting ones, you still can use them that way.

30 ships with radar 2 offer 60 (additional) sea detection, 26 ships with radar 2 and four CVL's offer even more sea detection.
They are definitely no longer a guarantee or auto-teleport, but in my experience, they still help. If that little help is worth the research time is another question, though.

Being bored as Nationalist China after I threw the Japanese off the mainland and became an unstoppable juggernaut, I created 3, count them, 3 CTF fleets with CVLs, not CVs. My logic at the time was that I only wanted to delay the Japanese fleet while I landed, not kill it, so build cheaper CVLs. Overall, it worked due to sheer numbers, but I don't think I did much damage to the enemy fleet. It was fun though, I can just imagine Hiroshima's face...

Before the patch, there was a "bug". If you had a fleet of lets say two CVL's and some cruisers, then the CVLs would "teleport" your cruisers into firing rage to a CV-fleet within a few hours.

At least thats what I have read and experienced, but Im sure there are those who can explain it better than me.

What nation are you playing and at what level is your Admiral? I can always close on a Jap carrier fleet with my BB/CA fleet and level 3 CVL when Halsey (tac, spot), Nimitz (tac/spot), or King (tac/br) or any other admiral who has reached a level 5 within a couple of hours. I have noticed that a level 2 with tactician does not close on a level 5 Japanese Admiral with tactician as should be.

Level is very important for positioning. CVL's would allow even low level admirals to close with higher level ones. This was a bug that has now been fixed. However CVL's are now basically useless, and not worth researching/building. If you have some, add them to your SAG's. They cannot hurt, and may help some.

You can always close in because the highest skilled admiral determines the range.

Interesting. I have been using 2 CVL 2s in my ITA cruiser fleets using 1.3B patch.

I only had one instance where I did not close with the enemy fleet within a few hours (including US super carrier V stacks). Perhaps it is because the AI mixes BB with their carrier fleets or perhaps because my positioning (ie naval techs) are currently better than the AI.

So people are saying that Radar is now worthy of being researched? and you should add radar brigades to your ships to help sea detection?

Thanks for the replies.

On another question, is it just me or have the japanese order of battle (naval wise) been changed?

The Japanese navy took 2 major hits in Armageddon. Those CVL's used to be CV 1&2's. With CAG 5 they were still respectable. CVL's are no substitute.

Second, I don't know what they did, but the AI no longer forms those ASW groups like it used to.

You can always close in because the highest skilled admiral determines the range.

If you do not have a CVL your BB/CA fleet will seldom if ever close on a CV fleet regardless of your commander. A CA fleet with a good Admiral and 1 or 2 CVL's is still the most cost effective fleet in the game although massed subs may be close but that too is gamey. Additionally, CVL's are very effective against subs.
