I'm playing USA in StoneyRoad 0507.
I concentrated on tech, but built a few infantry to garrison the islands (except Guam) and cover all the beaches.
First surprise. January 4, 1936 - Austria gives in to demands and joins the reich. Does this happen often?
I knew I was in for some interesting times.
Then in 1939 when the Germans tried to install Tiso, the Czechs decided to fight, so Germany DOW on Mar 15. The next day, UK, France, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada DOW on GE. I decided the US would stay out of it as long as we could.
By Aug 26, 1939 Lux, Czech, Poland, and Franch fell.
On Oct 9 USA cannot stay out any longer. Norway, UK, Free France, Can, SA, AUS, NZ, Bel (Congo) are all that stand against Germany, and the English do not know how to defend their little island. The USA joins and sends a landing repulse force. (7 Mech and 2 Armor Divs), right after we deliver the troops, the fleet continues to the north sea and sinks an old German BB and chase off a couple of Trn.
The Germans do not land in England.
By Oct 24, 1939. The Axis of evil contains: Ger, Fin, Bul, Hun, Rom, Ita, Afgan, Yugo, Paraguay, Persia, Argentina, Bolivia, Portugal, Spain, Vichy, and Greece. Quite a horde.
While UK concentrates on conquering Afganistan and losing North Africa, the USA decides to clean up the western hemisphere.
Before we can land, things take another twist.
The winter war event happens. Finland defies USSR, the commintern DOW on Finland and all her allies. I don't remember this happening when I played USSR...
Turkey joins Axis Nov 10, 1939.
Before we actually invade Argentina, Japan joins the Axis.
Jan. 14 we have our first encounter with the Japanese fleet. We get our hinds chewed.
Siam joined the Axis Mar 14.
Sweeden joins Axis July 3, 1940.
So now the evil empire is spreading into USSR and into Egypt.
Guam is the only island the Japanese take. They decide to go like gangbusters into USSR and China.
UK annex Afganistan by June 20, 1940.
USA annexes Arg and Par by Mar of 1940, Bolivia holds out till September 7. While waiting on the troops to get to LaPaz, USA invades North Africa. Somehow, the Brits still have Malta and Gibralter, but they lost Egypt. The American fleet would eventually get the supreme pleasure of sinking the British navy, manned by Italians.- Does this happen often?
The US army chases the Italians all across North Africa, a German trooper is never seen. We continue into Syria. Since I realize that invading Turkey from Syria would only help the French, we conduct landings in Southern Turkey. Greece is annexed on June 5, Turkey June 12 1941. Still no sign of German soldiers. The Russians are doing rather poorly. Moscow, Lenningrad, Stalingrad are all fallen. Murmansk is cut off, so my supply/raw materials convoy goes to Archangle.
Do the Russians make use of the materials I send or is that just throwing the materials into a black hole?
Bulgaria absorbed June 26, Hungary on July 26. We can't annex Yugoslavia, because their new capitol (and only province) is Sevastopol.
We build a defense line along the Bug (?) river, the Carpathanians and the Alps. Patton leads the charge into Italy, we stage Anzio and Salerno a bit early, then another division is landed on an empty Sicily. Italy falls on Oct 17. Patton continues into southern France, assisted by landings at Marseilles. On Nov 6, Vichy France falls. But is immediately claimed by the French.
Finally! The Big Surprise: The Germans attack me. They attack a small salient that hung out over the Bug, adjacent to Odessa. They attack with Panzer Mk VIII???? 1941?
Needless to say, my Shermans were forced to vacate the premises.
I thought I was doing extremely well to have just started my first heavy tank units. I hope they haven't been as busy on nukes.
I tried strategic bombing. As long as I bomb in France or south Germany, I never get intercepted. The one time I tried hitting Eindoven, about 10 fighter groups destroyed 2 of my 3 B-17s before I could tell them to flee.
I launched an attack on German Steel in south Russia, my lone B17 was intercepted and completely destroyed by 3 German bombers...THAT one I don't get.
The German bombers are MUCH better at knocking my organization down to 0 than mine are. I have level 2 DB and TAc, of course, I don't have as many. The good thing is that since I have annexed Italy, Turkey, Greece, Hungary, Romania I don't have to ferry new divisions and aircraft from the USA. Seems like I have to ferry the tanks back to the states if I want to upgrade them though...
I guess I will try building the bomb after all. There are no more easy targets, and the German army will only get stronger from this point on.
