Whigs' trade policy should be Protectionism - Whig party represented Eastern manufacturers opposed to large imports of manufactured goods from Europe (GB), which was favoured by the Southerners (and the Democrats).

Also, universal suffrage in the United States was adopted in the 1820s. For some reason, this is not so in the game.

Suffrage in US wasn't universal. It was what the "wealth" option also means: although anybody had the right to vote only those better off did.

Isn't that what're plurality and consciousness for? Besides, considering that a person like Andrew Jackson got elected, I wouldn't say that only the wealthy voted - he was the Westerners' President.

Is there any specific reason why Whigs favor free trade?

Try looking at it from the other way - the US DID NOT have universal sufferage in the 1820's because the slaves did not vote

While we're at this, would someone please explain the election of the Free Soil Party at the soonest possibility as I run the US? It's a tad absurd...they, with the American Party, get close to 80% and effectively displace the Whigs(who are already in the dump at the start) and Democrats as major parties. Something's screwy here.

Voting slave is an oxymoron .

And yes, there seems to be an issue with "third parties" having a major advantage. A third party should have a chance close to a zero of winning ANY elections. Don't try to "balance" the game by screwing around with the historical fact that in bipartisan systems, "third parties" are a joke at best (American Falangist Party, anyone?). And if there's a case where you need a "strong" "third" party (US Republicans, etc.), just don't give them "third party" status.

The current system prevents the farmers and miners that made up the vast majority of the American population to vote, which is simply absurd.

The Supreme Court was clear enough...in 1857 it was concluded that slaves, or, essentially, anyone other than whites, were not eligible to be citizens in the first place. If "universal suffrage" in the game allows slaves to vote, it would be totally screwed up .

No, seriously. Gray Davis did a brilliant job of setting up a vote-tampering system worthy of Boss Tweed with drivers licenses. You can, according to his law, get a drivers license if you're illegal, and put one over at the polls with that license if you try just a little.

Poll taxes would be my best guess, since the land requirements had gone away a while before.

Ok. There should be some way to culture-limit voting rights so that Africa Minor, Cherokee, Dakota, and so on(and who are the Nanafarangians or whatever they are that live in the West and have some goofy religion? Or is that yet another mini-goof, this one from the Oregon colony claim?) can't vote, only Dixie and Yankee and possibly the European ethnics.

Giving landed or wealth voting rights won't let them vote, since those pops are farmers, labourers and slaves.

Well in the UK any Commonwealth Citizens may vote in a UK election (from what ive read of the voting rights), they dont have to be a British citizen to vote.
