I have been playing with USA and have not managed to get the historical event "US-Mexican Wars" in about 5 consecutive games. I must be doing something wrong... When I start, usually I go help out Texas agaisnt Mexico, they usually sign a status Quo peace treaty and then I offer Texas annexation into the Union as a state.

Then after that, I get no historical event for the mexico region except "US offers to buy New Mexico", which is a hypothetical event and is not historic (or so the little box seems to say). Anyhow, its really not even feasable to buy it since your small little country cant even come close to affording the 200k it costs at that point, and the interests will bury your entire budget(120 per turn). Plus you only get Arizona and New Mexico. I figured to get California and all those other states you have to figth them. Do I have to directly declare them war or is there soemthing I am not doing to make the event that you go to war with them appear??

Actually, in vanilla Vicky there is an event (IIRC) in which Texas will request annexation from USA, and if USA agrees then Mexico get a choice to go to war with Texas, and only if Texas survives does it then get to join USA. Convoluted and not historical.

VIP handles this better, if I do say so myself. (I'm one of the people responsible for the VIP approach to the Mex-Am War.) If you're a history buff, try out VIP -- you'll probably find it to be an improvement.

Also, it doesn't work right. If I remeber correctly if you agree to let texas join as a state it doesn't join, while letting it join as a colony makes it join as a state.

IIRC, if you choose join as a territory, that doesn't work, but choosing join as a state does work. In any case, it's a messed-up, ahistorical event chain. VIP is better (if I do say so myself).

Its historical counterpart is the Gadsen Purchase where the U.S. spent15 million dollars on a small stripp of New Mexico and Arizona.

I've adjusted the purchase prices on all the land purchase events I wrote (and also the ones adapted from vanilla Vicky), so in VIP 0.3b this won't be so expensive. (The Alta California sale you're referring to will cost 50,000 instead of 500,000.)

I do the same. It's insane thea mount of money that they want during that time period. 50,000 is far more reasonable.

Well you can't hope to match the real world growth of the U.S. during that time frame without going bankrupt. Not to mention you can't do it anyways based on the general situation of the pops.

Btw, how many divisions are there in your mobilization pool around 1847?
When Mex DOW me, they got a bunch of Santa Anna good, Santa Anna rocks events, soon their army raise from 3 to 18.. plus all those rebels spawning in Cali , Arizona..etc, a big headache for me :wacko:

The 500,000 was a holdover from a previous era of VIP when we hadn't settled on a conversion rate from historical $ to what made sense in terms of the VIP economy. (The historical amount USA offered for Alta California was $25 million.) Hopefully the new amounts in VIP 0.3b will work better.

The California revolts will be tuned down a bit in 0.3b.

In my previous HO tests, AI USA has usually been able to deal with AI Mexico in a mostly historical fashion, despite the effects of Santa Anna's leadership. (Historically, SA did bad things to Mexico before the War, and after, but during the War he did prove himself to be a valiant military organizer, able to regroup the army in a heroic fashion -- unfortunately, he was not similarly talented when it came to actually fighting battles.)

In any case, the Mex-Am War is not a pushover for USA (regardless of what I learned in public school here in El Paso, Texas, back in the day). You have to expect a good fight out of Mexico, and prepare for it. (So muster those boys under the stars and stripes, before you decide to fight to keep Texas. :) )

EDIT: In 0.3b, USA should also gain 2 divisions of irregulars, one in California and one in Utah, simulating the settlers there who took up arms in support of USA. This should also help. (An error in the add_division command was previously preventing this from working.)

20 mobilized and 10 or 15 divisions of full-time troops should do the trick. I don't like to mobilze more than 20 because it hurts my economy too much.
