But back to the game, I saw an idea mentioned elsewhere that I really liked. Could you have the ACW much like the Spanish Civil War in HOI3, and have an option when the states secede as to whether you would like to be the Union or Confederacy? I wouldn't mind playing 25 years as the US if this was so.

Save. Load. Select.

Doesn't seem too hard, although you're right it's more straightforward to do it within the game if the engine can support it.

well the whole civil war system, any country can potentially split in 2 which i think is the idea or 3 or 4 sides

The English civil war wasn't even mentioned in EU3, despite it forming the core of our democracy (limitting the power of the monarch) and involving the formation of a new efficient army. It also killed 3.7% of the population, and that's without getting into debates about Ireland.
But because a load of right wing nut jobs still have a chip on their shoulder about being beaten fair and square by northern libruls, it's somehow important.

Where do you think Republican Dictatorship came from? There's also an event chain that most nations never run into, IIRC.

I think this thread has served its purpose. Those who want to continue discussing the historical background and interpretation of historiography can take the discussion over to the history subforum. The developers have said there will be a series of events to set up the US Civil War, we'll have to await full release to see how well they represent the events.
