A recurring problem in AoD (and HoI2) is that the US, despite being a superior nation is very incompetent in waging war against Japan: Unprotected transportships, stacking armies in the Marshalls, no co-op with allies etc etc.

Is there any way to make USA more competent to fight?

good question - once US has an idea, what it wants, it's quite persistent.
I (Japan '36 campaign) fought for new guinea for about 6 month in 1944 against 23 divisions of the US!

in the big picture, this wasn't the best strategy for them because i managed to capture the whole of Australia in the meantime...and india in the west.
I guess I would have had more trouble if they just forgot their stupid offensive of worthless new guinea an had helped their allies!

my experience of 3 games as japan was:
US ist quite a pain in central pacific, invasions to capture kwajalein, truk, yap,... and as mentioned new guinea, but they don't use these capured bases to put fleets there to disrupt japanese lines of supply/ressources/troop movement. So a bit of a tweak in AI could improve the US warfare quite a bit.

"Inconsistent seems to be the theme for the US. In one game, a powerful invasion force liberates western Europe and takes Berlin. In the next 200 divisions wander around Africa."

Of course! We all know how important Africa was during WW2. Control Africa as the US and you effectively break the back of Germany, Japan, and Italy in one fell swoop!

Brilliant strategy!

That's what I've noticed. I had one game where the US invaded through Greece in 1943 and France in 1944 and liberated all of Europe alone. There was even a point US forces were outside Kiev before for some reason the Germans drove them out of the Ukraine instead of defending Berlin. Another game the US threw the Japanese out of mainland Asia. In many others hundreds of divisions sit in New York or travel 5 or 6 at a time to liberate western Europe.

What I haven't seen is a game where the US liberates France and the Philippines in 1944 and then meets up with the USSR in Germany while pummeling Japan. Then again I almost never saw that in HoI2 either.

Even though the Pacific War is the theater where the range of choices for both attacker and defender is the widest, I found (as Japan) that the enemy strategy was sound. The only exception - and boy was it a glaring one - was the obsession of the British Army with Hong Kong. Nationalist CHina had been puppeted, the Philippines had fallen, my fleets and bombers were exacting a heavy toll on transports and escorting ships, and yet the British Admiralty and Army thought that they had to immobilize 15 divisions in unsupplied Hong Kong.

The rest of the campaigns were, on the other hand, very coherent. I think the "land campaign AI" does its job quite competently, while the "naval campaign AI" has a much more difficult job and (I suppose) less guidelines to follow.

The US is pretty useless in my game as Nationalist Spain too. They just continuously bomb france from england but don't actually do much else apart from stacking a few divisions in Africa. I hope they sort this out in 1.05 along with the naval issues. China needs some work too.

re:unprotected transports

I haven't played a full campaign with nofog, but if the ai seldom escorts its (loaded) transports it seems to be worthwhile to make transports capitals. I don't know if we can mod this on our own or if we have to rely on the devs.

Playing as Canada, I found the US to be singularly unwilling to engage in any land combat at all. After an initial landing in France, I slowed down in the hope they would pour some troops in... to no avail, all they did was put bombers into the airbases and soak up the fuel that my armour needed to advance ><.
Somewhat off the topic, but I ended up having to retake Europe by myself, and I'm now in the curious position of fighting a Germany that only owns about 30 provinces around Moscow, but has a 200-division army and no supplies to feed them. Surely a country should surrender when it doesn't own any of it's own territory any more?
