I am going to guess it was balance. They could really tear up larger mechs before especially with rng so it would make sense to keep them from altogether wrecking the stuff you see in the beginning.
I'd like to have a chance at Building a Better Urbie too. Who knows? With changing the Starting Lance being possible from the JSON files, maybe HBS is not done yet with adjusting the Starting Lamce itself!Funny thing is: As much as I love this little sucker, first thing I'd do is change it's loadout(no, not ripping out the engine totally, although I don't see any reason for an Urbie to move at all
)
Your elder siblings got the Blackjack and Locust, as the youngest you were lucky to inherit a mech at all. Rough going trying to join a merc crew with an Urbanmech. Maybe your brother insists on them taking the both of you as a package deal.Who knows? Not even capable of grasping this. Urbanmech over locust, always. I want to damage\destroy enemies, not tickle them.Your elder siblings got the Blackjack and Locust, as the youngest you were lucky to inherit a mech at all. I think they are just afraid of the Urbanmech, especially it's secret weapon!

Urbies, for me, will basically serve as an emergency stop-gap if my mid-range skirmisher is out of commission. There are a plethora of Medium 'Mechs that fill the Urby's combat role far more effectively. Much as I love the little trash cans, the only time I see myself fielding them is if I have no better options, or I'm limited on how much tonnage I can drop with.Group of retirees from the local old folks home over urbie, always. Not every mission is about destroying enemies, there are times when speed is your most valuable asset. Besides, anybody that is actually using a Locust for combat has bigger issues than “Locust vs urbie”, because they cannot recognize something as simple as battlefield roles.
"Violate the Core Identity?"...Isn’t that the point of the urbie though? You know, the fact that it sucks but is cheap. Wouldn’t “building a better urbie” violate the core identity?...

No.
Within its Core Mission Set, the Urbie is a solid Tactical choice and often times economical to boot. The problem arises the further the Urbie is pushed beyond its design parameters. Fortunately HBS has expanded the Urbie's Capability Set with the buff to the AC5, BATTLETECH's Movement Curve, and if I understand correctly, its BattleMech Chassis Base Heat Sink Capacity...
...though to confirm or deny this last, I'll need to be patient at least until I finally come up for air likely near 11:00pm (Eastern Time) 24 April. : )
Or they know to use Jenners for that, and never bother with a Locust at all.Group of retirees from the local old folks home over urbie, always. Though we've yet to see a mission that isn't about destroying enemies, so...
Locusts seem to be in this game for exactly two reasons: To give the player something in the starting lance to replace (thus teaching them about salvage and progression) and to have impotent, nonthreatening mechs to fill up the half skull missions with.
People talk about improving every mech.
The Urbie is really good at a very limited set of things. They do have a lot of room for improvement and they have the spare weight for it. Personally, I love the Urbanmech and I am thinking of building an AC/5 variant. Lots of options on the little trashcan.
I'll go one step further...Oh no!! You did not just call urbies cheap and easy!![]()
YMMV, but in my experience, people talk proportionately more about improving the urbie than any other chassis. To the point where I see most people’s “love” for the urbie being based upon how much they can modify it from stock rather than appreciating the base configuration.
As it is, the urbie is absolute garbage at anything outside of defending urban areas. One single role, that is it. Talk about pigeonholed. It may be economical, but that is all it really has going for it. Of course a problem arises when something is pushed beyond it’s parameters, that is literally the case for every single thing that has/does/will ever exist. That is a huge part of my problem, HBS had to buff so many of the things that only exist in their version of BattleTech and it is those buffs that you are having to take advantage of to improve the design. If the urbie were so great in the first place, why is it that I see so many players talking about improving it?
