I am going to guess it was balance. They could really tear up larger mechs before especially with rng so it would make sense to keep them from altogether wrecking the stuff you see in the beginning.

Funny thing is: As much as I love this little sucker, first thing I'd do is change it's loadout :D (no, not ripping out the engine totally, although I don't see any reason for an Urbie to move at all ;) )
I'd like to have a chance at Building a Better Urbie too. Who knows? With changing the Starting Lance being possible from the JSON files, maybe HBS is not done yet with adjusting the Starting Lamce itself!

Your elder siblings got the Blackjack and Locust, as the youngest you were lucky to inherit a mech at all. Rough going trying to join a merc crew with an Urbanmech. Maybe your brother insists on them taking the both of you as a package deal.

I think they are just afraid of the Urbanmech, especially it's secret weapon!

Yeah, because they had to close range with it to be effective. The coolest weapon does you no good if you cannot get into range with it.

I'd like to have a chance at Building a Better Urbie too. Who knows? With changing the Starting Lance being possible from the JSON files, maybe HBS is not done yet with adjusting the Starting Lamce itself!

Isn’t that the point of the urbie though? You know, the fact that it sucks but is cheap. Wouldn’t “building a better urbie” violate the core identity?

Group of retirees from the local old folks home over urbie, always. Not every mission is about destroying enemies, there are times when speed is your most valuable asset. Besides, anybody that is actually using a Locust for combat has bigger issues than “Locust vs urbie”, because they cannot recognize something as simple as battlefield roles.

Urbies, for me, will basically serve as an emergency stop-gap if my mid-range skirmisher is out of commission. There are a plethora of Medium 'Mechs that fill the Urby's combat role far more effectively. Much as I love the little trash cans, the only time I see myself fielding them is if I have no better options, or I'm limited on how much tonnage I can drop with.

"Violate the Core Identity?"

No.

Within its Core Mission Set, the Urbie is a solid Tactical choice and often times economical to boot. The problem arises the further the Urbie is pushed beyond its design parameters. Fortunately HBS has expanded the Urbie's Capability Set with the buff to the AC5, BATTLETECH's Movement Curve, and if I understand correctly, its BattleMech Chassis Base Heat Sink Capacity...

...though to confirm or deny this last, I'll need to be patient at least until I finally come up for air likely near 11:00pm (Eastern Time) 24 April. : )

urbies will only serve as target practice for my warriors. Yes, there are better ‘Mechs than the urbie (all the others) and those ones are what I intend to use. If there is an instance where I have to field an urbie, I will restart that entire play through.

Okay, is saying “violating the core identity” going a bit too far? Maybe, but I doubt it.

As it is, the urbie is absolute garbage at anything outside of defending urban areas. One single role, that is it. Talk about pigeonholed. It may be economical, but that is all it really has going for it. Of course a problem arises when something is pushed beyond it’s parameters, that is literally the case for every single thing that has/does/will ever exist. That is a huge part of my problem, HBS had to buff so many of the things that only exist in their version of BattleTech and it is those buffs that you are having to take advantage of to improve the design. If the urbie were so great in the first place, why is it that I see so many players talking about improving it?

Locusts seem to be in this game for exactly two reasons: To give the player something in the starting lance to replace (thus teaching them about salvage and progression) and to have impotent, nonthreatening mechs to fill up the half skull missions with.

People talk about improving every mech.

The Urbie is really good at a very limited set of things. They do have a lot of room for improvement and they have the spare weight for it. Personally, I love the Urbanmech and I am thinking of building an AC/5 variant. Lots of options on the little trashcan.

If I (or most any other player) had a Jenner, of course that would be a better choice than a Locust or urbie. However, this game is making us fight with what we have not what we want or what would be best. Besides, all three would be garbage when it comes to extraction missions, because they all lack hands.

The word “yet” is the operative word in that sentence. Considering Tyler was talking about his “Extraction Spider” ,which if I recall had zero ranged weapons, there will be missions like that. Based on past experience (I’m looking at you MWO) most missions can be accomplished by destroying all your enemies, but there are easier ways to accomplish missions where that is not explicitly the case. It would probably behoove all players to remember that fighting it out may not be the best option in this game since it is a campaign and we will have to pay for repairs in time and money with the addition of our chassis not being able to be used.

I would say that the Locust is in the game for more reasons than just those. Scouting, spotting, and extraction to name a few. In addition to the means by which we as players could use them to increase our own difficulty.

YMMV, but in my experience, people talk proportionately more about improving the urbie than any other chassis. To the point where I see most people’s “love” for the urbie being based upon how much they can modify it from stock rather than appreciating the base configuration.

Oh no!! You did not just call urbies cheap and easy!
I'll go one step further...

UrbanMechs are cheap dates, ugly as sin (I wouldn't be caught dead piloting one), and basically just a turret with legs. The only hope for their survival is to place them at the end of an alley and fire at those dumb enough to walk into the alley. In all other engagements, UrbanMechs are nothing more than speedbumps that you stomp over on your way to the real fight.

Yeah, but just because the stock urbie has one single, serious design flaw: It carries a useless 11th HS instead of a 2nd ton of ammo, unneccessaryly limiting it's staying power. Sure, you can do alot of other improvements, but this is true for most of the stock loadouts. The 11th HS is just stupid design.
If you can manage your UM-R60 to survive, this AC10 can be really useful. I would totally field one in my lance if I had to field a light mech at all, I prefer firepower over scouting.

In this day and age there are incredible fast cars, luxury models or bolides that will haul tremendous amounts of cargo. Cars that blur out any noise, vehicles that can jump distances and overcome any difficult terrain that we can throw at it.
Yet one of the more iconic cars is the VW Beatle. Although that car can do none of the above (despite Herbie movies) it is an iconic car that most people love. A model that has been lovingly restored by numerous car enthusiasts, garages or amateur entrepreneurs because it is what it is... imperfection but damn good fun.
No one is saying the Urbie is so great, they are just saying not to underestimate it.

I just remember damned Urbies plinking away at me from ranges in couple my backer beta single player skirmishes and me unable at first to get them into sight of one of my mechs.
