OK, please ben gentle (my first post). I have played about 3 or 4 games to completion of HOI (1.05c) and played the USA this last time. One frustration I had (and I don't know if anyone else also had it) was when I had finally researched the advanced battleship, I wanted to upgrade my ships in action from the 150mm+ models. I clicked on the respective units, the 'upgrade to latest model' option was highlighted (and thus available) and I clicked it, placing said units into the build queue for upgrades.

Well, needless to say, this took the ship out of action for the period, costed ICs to do so, and my ship came out the other side of the shipyards a whopping 150mm+ battleship (nice!). The only consolation was that it had a new coat of paint and a new set of latrines ... very much needed.

Anyone else have this issue? There a fix or something I am simply missing?

When you upgrade ships, you can't increase the ship class or main gun size (150mm+ to 350mm +),which is very realistic. What you were upgrading to is probably the installation of fire control radar, A/A radar, etc... I little trick to use to see what you are upgrading to (with respect to ships): look at your surface attack and defense, plus your air attack and defense, etc.. for your ship you want to upgrade. Then compare those statistics with a brand new ship of that class(using the build quere-just cancel the new ship when done) to see if it is worth upgrading. Ships are designed around the guns they are going to initially carry, it would not be practicle to try to upgrade an entire ship to fit a bigger set of guns.

Thanks a bunch - that certainly explains that seemingly glaring incongruity. Although I swear that my attack/defense values did not change either - looks like I will have to retest ;)

Thanks again!

It could be that something very minor was upgraded like an increase in your submarine detection capability. Like I said, just compare everything (built ship vs a new ship) to see what you will get after upgrading. Upgrade only when you are going to get a increase in several areas (this saves you time and ICs) I personally upgrade only when I get a increase in both naval artillery radar and air defense radar technologies for surface ships. I upgrade subs when you get the torpedo targeting computer (increase in attack), surface detection radar, etc...
