So I have now the benefit of a couple more days active forum use. There have been some genuine improvements since my earlier post
here. So to the nameless technicians who have been doing that - thank you. This post is to show what I believe the main remaining issues are. This is just my personal view, so others will likely have already mentioned many of these points. I will sometimes referto my earlier post.
1 -
Aesthetics. Admittedly a more minor one for me that some. I still dislike the splash images on the front page, and already I notice amending my browsing happens to avoid that front page. To that degree it comes more minor an issue.
Likewise the difficulty I was having keeping posts separate in a thread mentioned at point 13 of my earlier post, linked above, has reduced by choosing to keep the postbits expanded. I mean, it makes some threads less space efficient, but in the absence of sharper post delineation it serves.
2 -
Logging out. Happens multiple times a day, sometimes withing a browsing session. Makes for a much degraded browsing experience.
3 -
Unread Watched Threads. The previous forum's Watched Threads defauled to an unread watched threads list, which emptied as you caught up on stuff. There was then an option to view all watched theads. From personal experience, where even after only overnight more than one page's worth of threads can have been updated, this was a far superior arrangement to the current arrangement.
4 -
Broken Links. All the links made before the change are now broken. This is, deploying my British-born understatement, somewhat irksome. Equally I cannot imagine there is not a technical solution to ensure the old links can be made to work again. I hope such is implemented.
5 -
Signatures. Really just going to repeat something I said in my earlier post:
Again, this is possibly something that impacts the AAR section more than some others, as people often link to their AARs in their signatures. Mind you, I have seen modders do much the same thing. The practical impact, then, of truncating signatures is to reduce the visibility of the content Paradox's playerbase creates with Paradox games. Not entirely sure of the logic of that decision, and so I wonder if it was an actual decision.
(though note, given all the links are currently broken ... yeah, fixing links would be swell).
6 -
Subforums. Still displayed really poorly in the ribbon-bar like thingy in the game forums.
From the front page - I still prefer how the three "Other" forums are displayed, and would wish that would happen for all the game forums tbh.
7 -
Dev posts - Some I have seen some threads with a "Show only dev responses" button (see
this thread at time of writing) not that it seems to work, and others without. Does this mean that this button is due to be restored in due course?
8 -
Who replied. Like others I found this a sometimes useful feature, and I am sorry it is gone.
9 -
Precise view counts. This may be more an AAR forum thing, but I certainly know some writAARs like to see the actual number of views. Now it gets rounded. Can't imagine it would be that hard to display the precise number, since it is still clearly getting tracked.
10 -
Public display of previously not displayed info. My point 8 in my original post. Nothing to add.
11 -
Inconsistency in design between mouse-over automatically opening up a menu (such as moving cursor over where it says "Paradox Forum" or having to click "such as on username"
12 -
Duplication of Design. "Browse Topics" is the same as "Forum List". We surely don't need two buttons in the top headers doing exactly the same thing.
13 -
Forum list - still shows a random (and therefore not at all useful) selection of watched forums before the actual forums. As discussed in point 3 of my earlier post, if I want to see my Watched Forums I can do that. If I want to go the forum list - I actually want to go to the forum list. Currently the watched forums just get in the way.
14 -
Sidebar. Still un-necessary, but as mentioned in point 16 of my earlier post my eyes were already being trained to ignore it. That has advanced further. To be honest if you took it away right now I am not sure I would immediately notice (for example, I actually had to force myself to check the Stellaris forum as I could not remember seeing if it was still there, though I had been in that forum less than 5 minutes previously).
15 -
Postbit game icons. Still not solved - I have kept displaying all icons because as mentioned in point 1 of this post I found the larger postbits helped break up the posts now they are not so clearly delineated. However I know other people find them distracted. I think the old forum had the best solution with the 54 allowed icons.
16 -
Customisation. I note, from the preferences, there is reference of choosing whether or collapse a collapsible sidebear. Having played around with this it does not appear to impact the sidebar we have, so that has presumably not been marked as collapsible.
Why note?
Allowing this customisation would smooth over so many ruffled feathers, and would allow forum members to get the most out of their browsing experience. The same is true for the various colour palettes used in different game fora. I am increasingly of the view the lack of customisation is a missed opportunity, though hopefully it will be an opportunity taken.
17 -
Avatars. Forum avatars still appear a bit wonky, etc etc etc.
18 -
Communication. The big one. Still nothing. Someone is clearly working, and I dare say someone is reading. But it feels like no one else.
I already said most of what needed to be said on this topic on points 1, 23, 24, & 25 of my previous post. I see no need to repeat what I said there. I will just add, all the above matters, well, they are largely of a technical nature. This lack of communication strikes me as an altogether deeper, more pernicious rot.
But from what I can tell, on the basis of the utter lack of responses over the last few days ... well it is getting very hard not to draw a disagreeable conclusion.
