in HOI the units may be upgraded, whenever you have some new technology found for them, but a motorized div. will ever be a motorized.

the germans have modified some divisions of motorized inf. to armoured ones after the polish war, that´s historycally and now my suggestion:

may it be possible in HOI2 to do this too? or better, can i modify a blank inf.div. to a inf. div. with artillery-brigade and so on?

thank you

Holger

There seem to be Basic, Improved and Advanced levels for all types of infantry now (see the Canadian screenshot for more info), so upgrading these seems to be in ... my guess is this will also include what you suggested, going from plain inf to Mot.Inf to Mech.Inf ... perhaps even to full Armor (with a matching price-tag of course) ...

It also looks like Brigades are now built on another screen (not the main unit-production screen) ... which leads some of us to the conclusion that they might be de- and reattachable (*crossing fingers*)

If history is any guide, both should be possible. Not only should you be able to attach or detach different elements to a division, but you should also be able to convert any type of division into any other with combat experience remaining intact.

Time and cost whatever should be reflected in what you do. For instance converting a motorized/panzergrenadier unit into a panzer division is considerably easier from a training/equipment and organizational point of view than converting infantry directly into armor.

Cavalry should be at least as easy as infantry to turn into a motorized/panzergrenadier unit.

One exception to the above seems warrented however. No unit should probably be able to convert into a paradrop/air landing division. These ought to require having to be trained from start.
Para/Fallschirmjäger formations should on the other hand be viable for conversion into other unit types.

Happened all the time for Germany ...

1.Inf (no info in my book )
2.Inf -> 12.Pz
3.Inf -> 3.PzGr.
4.Inf -> 14.Pz
5.Inf -> 5.Jg
etc.

a lot of times they were reconstructed after they were destroyed, but also often they just got redesignated and reequipped ... at least the infantry part of every divisions should be reused ...

of course if you were able to construct your own divisions out of regiments or brigades (*he said, knowing very well that it will not happen*) ....... ah, one can dream ... ;)

Ardito - I followed your post with extremely warm and supportive feelings up until the last paragraph.

Surely the whole point of air landing/ glider troops is to obviate that long and expensive training requirement for full paras?

Also when Churchill deemed it necessary to form a parachute arm, I seem to remember that the nucleus were taken from KOSBs and the STAFFs - I had a book somewhere but of course. :eek:o
