How will it work if I decide to make e.g. two new patterns for my destroyer, which previously had only one?

Say I progressed in tech and decide to want to have two patterns for the destroyer-size hulls. Previously, I had only one, because it didn't make sense to make to different patterns when no significantly different weapons, shields etc. are available.
So I make two new designs, yay, and delete the obsolete old one. What happens with the old existing ships when I upgrade them? Do I have to choose from one pattern (optimum) or do I have to delete and replace them manually since the mechanic can't assign them to a certain design Name?

I know, it's completely rediculous to ask something that specific when the game isn't even out yet, but yeah, you know... can't wait and stuff :)

Would like to know about this too, since I intend to outfit same hull size for different roles (for excample, battleship carriers and battleship heavy hitters, flak frigates etc)

Curious indeed. As the "Upgrade Fleet" is just a general order to cause the fleets to go upgrade. I wonder if the predecessor of the specific make 'knows' to upgrade to its next gen upgrade.

Makes me wonder...once you change the original design specs for one ship, and then make an entirely new ship design; even though its the same class of ship, the modules would be different and you would be unable to upgrade the ships. Kind of like if I buy a 2014 BMW M6, I can't all of a sudden "upgrade" it to be a 2016 M6 can I? I might be able to upgrade the parts that "share" a similar area or what have you, but in order to get that "next gen" I need to "build" an entirely new car and then as upgrades come out for THAT car, then I can insert them....at least that's how I see it.

I hope that's how it works. Can't just take the Enterprise-D and "upgrade it" to be the new E Class...eveb though they're both battleships.

I hope that makes sense lol. Again, pure speculation on the matter.
