Update problems...

I just got the game, and have been playing for about a week,
when I checked out this forum and found the 1.05 update.

Seeing as I had no real problems with the game, I thought I would play the present game through and then update...

...but last night the game suddenly crashed to the desktop.
I restarted (a couple of times)...and it crashed again...same place...beginning of 1560...

"No problem. I'll update it now and hope that the savegame still
works."

WRONG! It wouldn't even start! Not even a startup-screen!

It looks as if it was updated to 1.05 ok...but it just won't start...
What should I do? What can I do?

If I reinstall the game it will start but the game crashes,
and if I install the update it won't start at all.... sigh...

Are you sre that you got the right 1.05 patch?

and what if you start a new game, does it also crash??

It doesn't crash...not immediately anyway...

I mean, it took a week before it crashed so I can't really be sure
it won't crash again...probably will though...

Would just be nice to be able to play a game to the end...

I'm pretty sure I have the right update, I even tried the other ones JUST to be sure, but they said that EU2 is not installed...

Use 1.05 and start a new game. Ur old ones prolly won't work anyway due to game fixes.

Save files are not guaranteed compatibility between patch versions, though they occasionally are. (1.04-1.05 comes to mind)

1.03 - 1.04 - 1.05 works as well

Hmm...I suspected that savegames from 1.00 wouldn't be compatible with 1.05. That's why I wasn't going to update it
until I had finished the present game...

BUT:

The real problem now isn't that the savegame won't load...
It might actually load, but I haven't been able to try because
the updated EU2 won't even start!

You could try a clean install of the original game. Then install the patch.
You can copy your savegames to another folder in the mean time.

Losing hope...

Tried and failed.

It's quite irritating to have the game just crash to the desktop...

It's quite another matter to have the game not start at all.
Never happened to me before...

Hmm.... Maybe one of the older patches would work. Anybody know where I could get them???

try renaming you avi-dir to something else

the bink-player has been known to cause crashes

What sort of crash did you get? You might want to do a virus scan, because that was what had befallen me one time when the game wouldn't start....

Tried scanning for viruses...no luck.
Gave up.
Tried to reinstall it. Nothing.

SUCCESS!!!!

Not that I'm really want to press my luck, I´m just happy that it works, but what was the problem in the first place?

Anybody had a similar problem?

Well...I guess I can use the "universal-excuse".

Im happy for you. Seems it may be a HD issue though rather then an EUII issue. With my current patch I crash once every 50 years or so. Just another advocate for autosave!

Could have something to do with default paths, Copy protection, or path names.
