Good to remember that ruler designer was a paid DLC for people complaining that it wasn't a base feature in CK3 (instead of a free-DLC as it is).

It's not even a free DLC, it's a free feature added in a patch. And only because they didn't manage to complete it in time for launch, as they had intended (afaik).

People have been complaining about online games, and devs ever since there were online games and devs. The first online game I ever played was Original "Guild Wars" back in the early 00s. From there it was onto "World of Warcraft" and "Aion". On every Gaming Forum I ever read, the complaints were endless, and I'm sure the "Lazy Devs Don't Care" is a meme by now, as is the perennial "Snowflake Gamer".
All of the above is true. What is also true is that:

People have been fanboying over online games, and devs ever since there were online games and devs. The first online game I ever played was Original "Guild Wars" back in the early 00s. From there it was onto "World of Warcraft" and "Aion". On every Gaming Forum I ever read, the fanboying was endless, and I'm sure the "Perfect Devs Do No Wrong" is a meme by now, as is the perennial "Fanboy Gamer".

We'll always have unreasonable whiners and fanboys. I don't see how that's relevant, though. The important thing is to look at each complaint and each piece of praise and evaluate whether it's reasonable or not (while also remembering that something can be reasonable even if we disagree with it).

Another important thing is to remember that the existence of unreasonable complaints (and praise) doesn't mean that all complaints (or praise) are unreasonable. :)

The only thing I find strange and complain about is the lack of communication the CK3 team has versus all the other PDX teams.

It's not that by now, with the exception of some bugs that will get fixed until the DLC release, CK3 team doesn't know in all certainty all the new content of the first DLC. Even if PDX-Nicou was hiperbolling the DLC big content in his recent comment, the CK3 team could make shorter Dev Diaries or provide info on specific bugs that are already fixed, instead of keeping us in the dark, contrary to the communication policy of every other PDX team that already posted details about what to expect in the future regarding the respective products.

Disappointing.

there was much more communication pre-release, and I get that there's more to talk about when no one's played the game yet, but it feels like it's been months since anything was even hinted at - I feel like I have nothing I'm looking forward to for this game at the moment

Let's all pressure all the world's governments to reduce February 2020 (2021* ooops) to three days.

This way, tomorrow would undeniably be mid-February...

2020? I know I also get it wrong at the beginning of the year.

I also am impatient, but I guess we will hear about it in one to two weeks.

I think the point that many are missing is that they sold a pack on release aka the Royal Edition that says we will get 2 flavor packs and 1 DLC. Many of us purchased that version of the product. Asking for a general timeline and a high level scope of features 5 months after buying that edition isn't bad form. It is simply asking, umm when am I going to get what I paid for and what is it going to include.

On good faith we bought it, to support the release and the product. If paradox doesn't want people to question their communication on an already sold product, they probably shouldn't pre-sell these things in the first place.

Are you seriously doubting that Paradox will deliver those flavor packs and that DLC? They never made any promises about when they would be delivered. Unless you can point me towards a statement that says otherwise? Just be patient. Content is coming. Announcement either next week or the week after (23 wouldn't count as mid-February I dare say).

No, of course not. I just think they should give us some information on them in a timely fashion. Generally season passes like that are for things delivered over the next year. At least that has been my experience in the past. What I'm saying is that we are five months into a year and no information has been given on the subject at all.

I think it is reasonable to ask for an update. You aren't going to convince me that they don't know what their first flavor pack is going to be by now.

It is just poor form on their part, that is all I'm saying. I love their games and I will continue to buy them. I just think that their communication on the flavor packs, dlc and roadmap has been pretty lacking.

I think what I am questioning is the timing. I would expected a flavor pack by now.

I did roughly expect that the Royal Edition content would be released over the course of a year after release. That's still possible if the flavor packs have a quicker turnaround time than ck2 dlcs did. But, Paradox did indeed never specify a timeframe for us. If it takes longer than a year, we'll just have to be patient and wait. (I'm not advocating for infinite patience - there is a point at which the timeframe for the Royal Edition content would become ridiculous.)

Regardless of the timeframe, I would like to repeat my plea for the devs to maintain some level of a presence here. Back at release, we knew they were collecting feedback and putting a patch together, and I was really glad to see that a couple of my threads bringing up specific issues were addressed in the patches (maybe not specifically because of me, but a man can dream :D). We know that Paradox continues to address and overhaul aspects of the base game in free patches that come with dlcs, and I think there's still plenty of things to hash out to make the base game as good as it can be. But, I feel less inclined to post and debate issues when there's no indication that the devs are still actively involved.
