ARG!

So I'm the Ottoman Empire in World War I, fighting the British edges of my empire as I push deep into the Caucasus. Unlike the real-life Ottomans, I am successful against the Russians -- and I am maneuvering my troops toward total domination of the region.

But then -- without being consulted -- my war ends when a peace treaty is struck. I got a lot of the Greek islands and Armenia. But I wasn't done kicking Russia's butt.

How can I prevent unwanted peace treaties?

Avoid unneeded alliances. ;)

I'm actually halfway serious. náraiC said it better.

The real advantage to alliances is that it often gets you a war without prestige loss, but you have to be aware of who the alliance leader is. If you are not the alliance leader, you cannot afford to be greedy. Take what you think you can get quickly and get out before you get shafted with the peace agreement.

Of course, I'm a fine one to talk, because I invariably become so engrossed in the fighting that I usually get caught holding the short end of the stick myself.

So, as náraiC said, it is best to be the leader whenever you can. Unless you have better will-power than I do.

I agree with Relee there... if you get in alliance try and get in and out quick with some small gains and let the other nations fight it out. Encouraging other nations to fight is usually a good way to make sure you rise higher in the ranks as during war the AI a bit singleminded and you can gain ground on their industrial score etc. Just make sure to share out the wars so no one nation becomes overwhelmingly powerful as a victor. I've made that mistake with Russia, Germany, and UK quite a few times. Russia probably more than any other as if they get a few nice war victories and are fed some tech they can quite easily crush anyone except UK though even there I've seen them land in British isles a couple games during a war.

I'd love to be the leader ...

... of the alliance, but I started the game with alliances in tact as part of the "war to end all wars" scenario. I have a previous game that I can return to, but how do I prevent the powers-that-be from striking a treaty just as I'm pushing deep into Russia's southern border?

Or is that possible?

Not possible to prevent. The rule of thumb is if you have specific goals with your war, your allies will mess them up.
