Anyone else noticing that the earlier start date has some serious issues in the Iberian peninsula? Most notably the power that the Umayyads gather and quickly become Hispania, and before you know it, they are eating up France? I can understand that this may happen when they start so strong, but it seems like it is happening in every game I have started and played/observed.

Unfortunately is a known issue , in fact if you dont't proactively hinder their advance it is bound to happen. I would also like a way for poor Asturias to get a possibility but never happens. As far as i know no fixing is on the way

Probably has something to do with vassal AIs going nuts with holy wars, and being shielded from coalitions. Its the same reason why the ERE keeps blobing into Central Asia or why in the later starts France and Italy set up North African empires a few centuries early.

It's currently happening in mine, and it's not the vassals that are expanding, but the head guy himself. Uymayyads sitting at 0% decadence and are now pushing past Aquatine. The earlier starts are rather unpolished.

Give it a decade or 2 they'll be back on top. Even if they do pop like that look at the rest of Europe it's mostly a mess except for Italy so no one is really in a position to get the land back from them anyway.

Thats a completely RNJesus inspired event.

Decadence for the AI either does nothing at all or instantly destroys the kingdom.

The problem for me is Id like to play as something more the Charlie or Aurelio, but unless I want Catholicism to implode into a million pieces you cant.

Once Galicia falls MA starts tanking and hereseys spread like wild fire.

I will asusme you're playing in the 769 start, which is you problem, the two early starts aren't all that great (and should really only be played when you want to do something you can only do there) but769 is way worse than 867.

Paradox doesn't want to take any risks by nerfing muslim factions.
Muslims don't need nerfing, the ummayyads need nerfing. Nerfing all muslims would basiclaly result in buffing the byzantines and no one want that to happen.
I belive the key is to nerf muslims controlling non muslim provinces and making muslims worse at coverting christians in iberia. That should nerf the ummayyads but not all muslims and shoudl also allow them to lose the northern iberias while managing to hold on to southern iberia for a lot longer.

You're tempted to help out down there if in the western map, but as usual your hands are tied by the constant Viking "hobo" whackamole "mini-game" (whole generations massacred for 50 gold's worth of phat loot).

In Charlie starts it's a good idea to play on the eastern half of the map, away from such tiresome predictabilities.

How would making it harder to convert Iberia make it harder for the AI Ummyad's? In the long term that would give them more gold from the tax.
