Recently, a number of changes have been added to the game which weren't popular among them :
-Blocking straits : to block an opponent from crossing a strait you now need to control one of the two provinces forming it, which took out one of the cool mechanics for fleets and reduced their use (and we all know that it's not what fleets need) and it was done to help Denmark survive. This change ended up making Sweden become independent a lot less likely but also made the good old trick of blocking the Bosphore and winning against the Ottomans quite impossible to do. In one of my games preceding the last patch, playing as Shiba, I had invested in a powerful fleet, making me the strongest damyo in terms of ships. When the emperor attacked me with help of the two other remaining damyos I managed to block them in the Shikoku island, which payed off my investment in ships.
-The new culture system coming in 1.16 : which is nor realistic nor historical nor a good option for gameplay. It would make expansion easier since the culture groups are apparently grouped by their geographical positions, it will also buff the Ottomans who clearly don't need that. I will redirect you to another thread which proposes a solution to that https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...oups-need-to-be-removed.904810/#post-20570994
Paradox Interactive is known for listening to their community, and I hope they will try to improve on these aspects. I'm not complaining, if these changes are conserved and made I will live with it and continue playing this beautiful game with some regrets nonetheless and I would wan to know their position on this and even hear their arguments.

Not sure if unpopular. You don't often see people go to forums just to praise something they like. So of course you'll see mostly complaints.

- I don't think it helps Denmark all that much, actually... the fort in Skane or Midtjylland need to be taken since they project ZoC anyway, and then you're back to old rules again.
The changes to the Historical Rival situation is what's making them survive more often...

- That change hasn't actually been made, so it might not end up as shown in the DD. I'm on the fence. It does make the current culture system a bit more inclusive; right now it's "Oh hey, these few provinces are in your own culture group and follow special rules. Everything else ditto".

I think it was a good change that you could no longer prevent a crossing if you don't control at least one side of the strait.

Culture is arbitrary anyway it was and ever will be a crude simplification of a multitude of factors.

I dont mind either change so you are not talking about the entire community. I do however feel like paradox are removing a lot of exploit a player can pull of in single player for no good reason. While i dont mind it time could be better spend on other areas of the game, as a player i can simply choose to not use certain exploits.

I don't mind the new strait block mechanics, just means you have to be a bit craftier in how you go about it. As a still relatively small Genoa, I managed to gank the Ottoman fleet, dropped a decoy infantry in Achaea to lure them out of Constantinople while landing another two in Hudavendigar which split up and captured Biga & Kocaeli which had no forts, blocked the straight and proceeded to ferry more troops over to siege down Anatolia. :p Though I do miss the trick of letting them walk half their force into Scio and trapping them there instead.

I don't think the strait change has made a difference in my games. The culture change is mixed bag, but a lot of what I see people complain about specifically for it is that it somehow nerfs Russia (which is false). Honestly the bigger issue with the culture change is people trying to inject nationalism-era ideology into a game set pre-nationalism.

We're not saying that the culture changes won't happen, they will, we're saying people should stop getting weirdly intense about it. It's an abstraction in a Video Game. Personally I agree with all of the changes except bringing back Turko-Semitic. The Strait change didn't really effect all that much except making the Danes and Ottomans more secure, honestly most of the complaints I've seen about the new straits mechanics come from people not really understanding how it works now.

And I concur with Freudia that a lot of the complaints coming in about the culture changes are from folks projecting nationalistic insecurities into a pre-nationalism setting.

Straight blocking only allowed for cheesy tactics and as far as culture is, I find that too much importance is being attached to it; there are French people in France, Iberian people in Iberian, Chinese people in China,... Anything more in depth than this, I leave it to Paradox discretion.

Although I learn to live with it, the straight blocking mechanic makes no sense to me whatsoever.

For example the Bosphorus strait is 30 km long and at its narrowest place 700m wide.

However, if playing as Ottomans you have 100 galleys spammed in the area and the attacker cannot even send in one transport ship, how on earth can they walk accross ?

It should not matter who controls both sides of the straight, its simple logic that ships (usually with cannons and archers) would easily reduce any would be swimmer to fish meat.

And forget about horses and artillery crossing the strait without ships.

As per one of the new screenshots from 1.16, there is even a strait at Dover which in reality is 33.1 km at its shortest distance and again, slightly deeper than 6feet...

Again, spamming ships to patrol the area after you killed off the enemy fleet, I cannot see the logic as to why any soldier would be able to walk on water and magically avoid any of the ships.

On the other hand, the artillery along the shorelines that you don't control would turn your galleys to matchsticks the moment they attempt to enter the Bosphorus.

In the absence of any such effects, the current system is probably the best compromise. It's not great, but the previous system was every bit as illogical while also being far worse for gameplay.

Maybe a few matchsticks in the Bosphorus, how do you explain the Dover strait (or many other straits for that matter which are wider than 700m) ?
