Hi, I brought HoI3 two weeks ago (never played any of the HoI games prior to it)and have been playing a couple of games (mainly USA) just to learn a bit about the basics prior to the next patch.

I've come across this event/decision "destroyers for bases" where I give the UK 50 1200 type destroyers in return for basing rights in certain of their territories and I'm not sure what to do.
Do I just click on the tick box and that's it (I've tried this and don't seem to be able to base any of my ships in the designated territories)? or do I have to make 50 destroyers before the date (Sep 2, 1940) which are then handed over? or do I have it completely wrong and it's something I shouldn't worry about

There is also an event in which the US gets the rights to Greenland and Iceland (something about the Danish ambassador). But when this did happen I was able to see my flag alongside Denmark's and Iceland's, I was able to land troops in Greenland, but I was not able to rebase my transports there.

I normally don't like to bother people but I've searched everywhere I can think off and can't find any info on this, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

is there going to be a reworking of the panels like production, technology, statistics? I would like to see a production panel option that automatically changes according to demand and a more realistic technology tree (probably need to skim the mods forum for this), and how about a statistics panel which tells me some relevant information. For example, I need to know the total number of my troops and their casualties so that I can prepare for invasions and add reinforcement brigades accordingly.

Thanks, but.....

Thanks, Jamie, but while I was able to open and edit the defines.lua file, it refuses to save it. I don't know if it's a Vista thing or not. It is perhaps significant that the only way I can find the file in the common folder is by changing the view criteria from text files to all files. It isn't really in the countries folder, but it's a file in the common folder that includes countries, and some other files; but it can only be accessed through the common folder by, as I mentioned, changing the viewing criteria from text files to all files. Then, after modifying the file, it refuses to save, saying it cannot "create the file...." with the entire path shown.
Thanks again. Very nice of you to help.

Is Hearts of Iron installed in Program Files? If so, notepad (or any other editor) will need administrative permissions to save. It is usually easier to install the game in some other folder not under Program Files.

You're Hunch Is Correct

Yes, HOI3 is installed on my computer under Program Files. I'll look for a way to give myself permission to modify and save the file. Perhaps I'll re-download the game and patch that one when 1.3 comes out. Thanks again.

How can I force SoViet Union to surrender?

Using Germany in 1941 campaign in Quickstart, I had occuppied nearly all European countries. France, Belgium, Neitherland and many countries had annexed or surrendered. So I turned all forces to Soviet Front in the east.

By the June 1942 I had taken Moskva, Lenigrad, Stalingrad, Kiev, Khacop nearly 1/3 territory of Soviet Union. The US forces has landed on Argakhen port in the north of Baltic sea to support the Soviet Union.

The question is: How I can make the Soviet Union to surrender? Please help! Thanks so much?!

Similar in a game I played. To get a major to surrender you need a combination of a majority of their victory point provinces, lowered national unity and I believe destruction of a significant number of their military forces. some suggestions I have:

1. Start maximizing your spies going to the SU and set them to decrease national unity, also if you have any strategic bombers start blasting the SU as well

2, If you have not already been doing so try cutting off and surrounding SU forces and then attacking them so they surrender/eliminated

3. Lastly, make sure to look for the closest VP provinces and start focusing on taking these. For me to get the SU to surrender it took taking their 2nd capital (forget the province)

Also not, careful when they do surrender it will only be half the country and the SU will still exist, if you don’t garrison the border and keep the spies pressure up on the NU they will remobilize and DOW again against you (learned that by mistake myself)

Sorry I forgot to post the specs of the model .
Graphics card ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 or ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570
CPU AMD Athlon™ 64 X2
Up to 8GB of RAM .

Well, as a relatively cheap laptops go it's not bad at all. May want to spring for the 4570, but I'm not sure how much cost that adds, and that laptop's best feature is the netbook-level price tag. The CPU is an Athlon X2, which is an older architecture. 4 GB RAM should be fine for now. You'll get better performance at a higher price point of course, it'll certainly run the game (though not as well as the guys running say Core 2s, Core i-whatever and Phenom II/Athlon II systems). Not fast though, there's no $500 laptop on Earth that'll run this thing fast, I would expect roughly 9-10 minute months in the usual benchmark (1943 scenario at max speed for 1 month, Core 2s routinely bring in 5-8 minute numbers). However, good luck finding a $500 Core 2 laptop that isn't using a X4500HD graphics chip (Intel makes great CPUs, but really low-end graphics chips).

It's all about the VP. The Soviet's National Unity is the percent of their VP you must occupy to make them surrender. How much you already have taken is tracked in the diplomacy screen. Those with lots of time on their hands can calculate exactly how many more VP they need to take from that info and the map. Spies to drop NU, uncontested bombing and the effects of the home front will slowly drop Soviet NU, but it's faster to just take more VP.

Unfortunately, 1.2 has a bug in the BP event in that it doesn't prevent SU from just DOWing you again the next day. Comrade Beria is quite the warmonger.

Last night, at the final time, SU had surrerendered to German. Germany troops had occuppied Moskva, Leningrag, Kiev, Khackov, Kybusiev (the second capital of Russia). All Russian forces retreated to the east. SU also existed in the east, but I don't experienced SU will regroup and attacked German against. So, Can German declaire war against SU another time? It is very difficult for German as the road to Far East is too far?

I bought the game when it was released, but unfortunately my computer couldn't run it. So I'm buying a new one!
I would like to know if any one knows if I will be able to play the game with this computer:
Model X3812. Intel Celeron Dual Core
E3200 (2,4 GHz). 4 GB DDR2 RAM.
750 GB harddrive. 1919 MB ATI HD 4350
graphic (512 MB dedikeret) with HDMI.

It runs with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Is that good? :)

Hope you can help me. I really wanna play the game!

sincerely

Jacob

It'll work. That's a Core 2 based Celeron. Windows 7 64 bit is the way to go at this point.

On the other hand, there isn't much room to grow in that PC. If you're not the type to make upgrades yourself (I am), that's fine, and you'll appreciate the small form factor and low power draw.

It has a bug here. After defeat Russia first time, Russia commit surrender, West Russia was oppcupied by German force, East Russia be long to new goverment Russia. After 2 months, German declaires war to Russia again. And fighting about next three months, Russia commits surrender again. And then there is an unusual logical event happened. All German troops has been force to retreat to West Russia, East Russia continues to belong to Russia. The enenemr Rusia faction seem not to be eliminated?!! How and Why? So it is called error in program or not???

Fixed in 1.3. Surrender events like BP set flags so they won't fire again.

Is there any serial production bonus? ( i mean one unit requires 100 days, two - 190days, etc) the same with parallel production, and where have gone mass production technologies -)?
Also i`m wondering why my scientific skills are getting lower as the time passes. Can i get them back? or it is in accordance with skill lvlup from chosen technologie being studied.

Gearing bonus is now Practical. Whenever you build a unit, you get Practical for that unit type (Infantry, Armor, Mobile, Capital Ship, Two-Engine Bomber, etc.). High Practical gives you a bonus on cost and time for production.

Every month, your Theoretical and Practical Knowledge decays by 2.5%. This comes to about a 50% loss every two years. This means that if you want to stay good at something you have to keep building and researching. Otherwise the people working there move on and their skills start to dull. Unfortunately, Upgrades and Reinforcement don't increase Practical (though I'm told they slow the decay, I cannot confirm this).

ok, thx. wiki helps a lot, but still have questions - i promote Lt. General to Field Marshal but his skill lvl doesnt change. is it a bug? I know low ranked officers get expirience faster but...

and more - if i stop my research ( cancel it) and then begin it again i loose all progress done with it? - i.e i choose one - it reqiures 4 months, i m researching this for 3 months then cancel - is this time lost or i will need only month to complete?

This is not a bug. Promotion just means they can command in a higher HQ, for example a Lt. General(**) commands a Corps; while a General(***) commands an Army.

The skill level will increase by 1 when experience reaches by 100%. I normally assign the best commanders at division level until skill is high enough (or maxed out) before assigning them higher up the chain of command.
